watching the in conversation s22 collection interview with her + this information always makes me really sad but also greatly admire her for the fact that she's shown so much love to the show to this day and has found peace in her life. nicola wanted to give so much to peri especially since it was her first big role and the fact she wrote up a whole background of what peri was like and it sort of just got ignored by JNT is really disheartening. there were so many things about the behind the scenes in the interview that shocked me, bless nicola for being able to open up about it and remain so collected through it all. i don't ever want to speak for her but seriously she deserved so so so much better

okay I may be stretching a little into parasocial territory here (trying to keep it in check, but those with hyperfixations know how much they can take over your brain)

But I just feel so inherently sad about how Nicola Bryant was treated during her time on Who. First she’s forced to keep up the act that she’s American for the entire time that she’s on the show. The agent who put her up for the part told her to audition with an American accent but that if she got it then he would explain it to them. He never did, so there she is on her first major acting role right out of drama school in her early twenties having to keep up this American accent not just on the show but also behind the scenes and in any promotional work like tv appearances and conventions etc. Then she was also forced by JNT to pretend she was single even though she was at the time married. There’s the infamous comments about Peri existing solely as ‘something for the dads’ hence her skimpy outfits (obviously this isn’t just peri unfortunately but she is I would say one of the major examples of this). This also ties into the attitudes behind the scenes where Nicola describes having ‘constant comments’ about her appearance, including JNT insisting that she bring ‘the tightest outfits she has’ to the first photocall.

Then we get to the whole Caves of Androzani filming mess that I already made a post on a few weeks ago but to sum up they left Nicola (who is also asthmatic just to note) filming outdoors in freezing cold temperatures in a very skimpy costume that lead to her getting pneumonia, plus being in flimsy sandals lead to her developing frostbite on her feet. She was also supposed to take time off to recover yet was back in work the following Monday.

Once she left Who and was finally able to drop the American accent at least, she was let go by various projects and blacklisted because she’d ‘lied to them’. The accent thing wasn’t even her fault or doing, the fact she’d had to keep that up even in a lot of her personal life stuff for so long and then got penalised for it when she’d only just started building her career is so sad.

(Quick disclaimer! This is based on info picked up from watching a lot of interviews and con panels etc. so like, don’t sue if any of this is incorrect I’m just repeating what I’ve read)

Random Doctor Who Facts You Might Not Know, Part 23

River Song chose Bernice Summerfield as her tutor in university because she knew the Doctor. Benny remembers that she was the most annoying student she ever had, rarely attended class, but still graduated on top.

Not only does the Sixth Doctor wear a cat brooch, but he wears cat cufflinks too.

Jenny had managed to track the Eleventh Doctor down during the Siege of Trenzalore but was unable to get to him due to the forcefield kept by the Papal Mainframe.

The Sixth Doctor has twelve identical spare coats in the TARDIS wardrobe.

Leela once stabbed the Second Doctor with a Janus thorn. Jamie immediately began a knife fight with her in response.

Peri Brown once had to disguise herself as Queen Elizabeth I, big dress and all. The Sixth Doctor was much more amused by this than she was.

When Helen first became a companion, she thought the Eighth Doctor was scary.

After the Twelfth Doctor kicked Rassilon off Gallifrey, Rassilon allied himself with the Cybermen, was converted into the CyberPresident, and created an alternate timeline where the Cybermen had taken over the universe. This timeline was later eradicated.

While at university, River stole a vortex manipulator in order to get help from her future self on essays. The reason she wasn't expelled was because she argued that it was impossible to plagiarize off of herself.

Some behind the scenes tidbits I feel normal about (classic who edition):

- apparently every story Matthew Waterhouse's hairstylist would say they were going to trim his hair and never did, resulting in all the variations from crusader triangle to fuck ass bob to shaggy mullet

-Peter Davison was unaware he was many people's sexual awakening in his dressing gown in black orchid

-Colin baker was mistaken for a runner by another actor in arc of infinity and asked to go fetch a coffee (which he did)

-he would also walk around making chicken noises on the set of arc of infinity (until he was told to stop)

-Matthew didn't know adric died in part four of earthshock until he read Peter's script whilst shooting, and was apparently more upset over the fact he was being killed off rather than just leaving

-a lot of the doctor who movie was filmed in the same building as the X-files

-Janet Fielding was told she was good casting for doctor who because she "looked slightly alien"

-Deborah Watling and Frazer Hines used to joke that she left the show because she got pregnant, as she left almost nine months after arriving

-Sylvester Mccoy once couldn't find a filming location until after the doctor who fans, who had been waiting there for an hour

-Paul Mcgann thought all the doctors companions were their kids

-Peter and Sarah Sutton had to stop Janet from accidentally prostituting herself in the red light district

-Sylvester once played the spoons on a guy that tried to menace him

-Paul had to wear a wig because he was casted with the long hair you see in the movie but cut it all off for another role a couple months before they started filming

-Janet called Matthew "matte-finish" and "boom-boom waterhouse" whilst filming earthshock

-the cast bought a prop gun for arc of infinity from a sex shop in amsterdam

This means rejecting any thoughts of self-doubt, of glorifying the input of others over your own, of seeing yourself as beneath others, or putting the considerations of others over your own.
