Basil sorted through the boxes stacked in the trailer, looking for any of them that had his name sharpied onto them. He had hoped that his mom would’ve sorted them into the trailer in organized piles. Living room on one side, kitchen on another, bedrooms, bathroom, miscellaneous each in their own spots. But she hadn’t done that, and so he found his stuff in boxes all over the trailer.
He was surprised that his mom could even afford the trailer— getting out of the house hadn’t exactly been something public. She had been stockpiling things in the barn since Basil had been in seventh grade, and he was amazed that his father had never noticed. But then again, his father never went into the barn.
He finally found the boxes he was looking for and stacked them, carrying them into the house. The house was old. Two stories, three bedrooms, one bathroom. Basil had his own room— perks of being the oldest and the only boy. Rosemary and Lavender had to share a room, and he could already imagine them fighting and screaming over who would get the bigger bed, whose half was whose, sharing their toys. It would be an absolute nightmare. But he had a door with a lock that lead to a room all his own, so he had no right to complain.
All of the rooms still had furniture in them. The living room had a dusty, most likely spider infested, couch with a pattern of faded cabbage roses and two matching armchairs. The kitchen had a small table that would really only fit three of them, and the dining room had a matching table in a bigger size. All of their bedrooms had beds, and Basils was ancient. He was surprised there weren’t springs breaking through it. The dressers were old, and had stupid things in them, like wrapped sage and handkerchiefs and a million half-finished doilies that his Nana must’ve been making.
