this morning my UNMASKED self helped out at school arts department here in LOS ANGELES. this is not usually something i talk about to protect privacy of my other creative life but given whats happening in LA i think its worth the mention because ICE raids hurt these kids in so many insidious ways

they have NOTHING to do with how they arrived here and right now the fear hangs over them in a way that effects everything they do. yes, they could LITERALLY get snatched off the street, and some do, but even outside of the physical threat THE THREAT ITSELF is so harmful

the strange vibes and mysterious absences hung over everything at the start of the day, but when i popped in after helping i watched the assembly i saw something really beautiful: kids having fun. they were with their buds, they were in community, they were forgetting the threat for a moment.

there are so many ways to help. you can march in the street, you can volunteer, you can use art to urge others to do the same. you can CREATE spaces like an assembly auditorium full of cheering kids. today i am suggesting a donation. here is post of suggestions im trottin

Shit's going down in Los Angeles area.

What happened is that there was already protests against the ICE detention facilities, and ICE made the brilliant move of kidnapping the leader of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU). Protestors started pushing their non-violent actions, with ZERO weaponry, and ICE has begun firing teargas and rubber bullets (which can be fatal). Tonight they are bringing in the NATIONAL GUARD.

Meanwhile, they're stepping up kidnappings and "deportations"--If you dont have your papers and you live in southern california I'd avoid leaving your house. If you're a citizen, keep your papers on you as you leave.

And if you're one of the brave people fighting this gestapo, PLEASE DO SO SAFELY!!! Dont use milk to rinse out teargas or pepper spray, it can cause infections with the bacteria in it!!!! Use water!!!! Tell someone where you're going, but leave your phone at home unless you're there to document. If you are there to document, DONT SHARE PROTESTORS FACES OR IDENTIFYING FEATURES on social media!!!! And for fucks sake, WRITE A LAWYER PHONE NUMBER ON YOUR BODY WITH SHARPIE, trust me, it could save your ass.

Heyo! With pride month starting, here's a quick comic on pride Etiquette, a short guide / general tips on treating lgbt+ people, for the new, curious, and those who forgot!

1) Treat people's identities as the indisputable truth. Even if you don't think they fit the definition, even if you don't understand (the identity), even if you think they're lying, even if they're a bad person. It's not your job nor your business to tell people what to call themselves. Unless they ask for your opinion, only the individual can make that decision.

*There's very few times when an identity can actually be harmful. This includes predatory labels, labels that are bigoted by definition, or people identifying with culture-specific labels when they're not part of that culture. Otherwise, leave them be!

2) Respect and use people's pronouns, regardless of how you feel about them! If you don't know how they work, ask! If you accidentally misgender someone, correct yourself and move on! No need for lengthy or dramatic apologies. However, also make sure to ask when it's appropriate to use them! Someone may not be out to parents, certain friends, etc, and will ask you to purposefully misgender them for safety.

3) LGBT+ people are not responsible for someone else's anti-lgbt+ views! Strange, unbelievable or confusing identities do not cause bigots to be bigots- the lgbt+ community was made because we don't fit society's box, don't fall into the trap of forcing people into another one! If they're not actually hurting anyone, then leave them be!

4) You're not expected to learn every single lgbt+ term / identity. Nobody knows all of them, not even lgbt+ people, so don't worry about it! Simply learn and ask questions as you go!

5) If you're curious about someone's identity, ask if they're comfortable with questions first! There's no harm in educating yourself, but sometimes we get tired of being walking encyclopedias!
