A few pages taken from my publication. This is an accumulation of collages I have been working on for the past few months, concentrating on the theme of skateboarding culture.

I think David’s editorial work on raygun is fascinating. I love his use of layering images and collage to create an almost punk-like atmosphere. There isn't a continuous theme throughout, but that makes each publication that much more unique. I would like to incorporate this idea into my own work, without worrying too much on the finer details, but what the overall composition looks like.

I am very interested in Claire’s work. She has a broad range of skills, but I am particularly taken but her work with books. She predominately uses acetate as the pages and the cover. Her books are bound in the same way- hole punching and threading the pages together.
I like the aspect that you don’t know what is the cover page. The book itself becomes a sculptural piece when put on a plinth. It’s interesting that she has laminated objects and memorabilia into the pages.

I am looking at this Japanese stitch as I think it would work well for my publication. The pages are made up of acetate, so can easily crack when sewn in. This way would allow you to hole punch the acetate and then attach the cover. I like this method as you can also play around with how the stitching looks or the materials used.

Here are various artists I came across in the Modern Art book published by Taschen. The artist may not be contemporary however I am drawn to their use of collage. The accumulation of little images to make up one larger, more striking piece.
I am most intriuged to Raoul Hausmann’s work as I like the way he layers images. They may not make particular sense at first glance however they are telling a story. This collage is depicting that Tatlin, the man being shown in his home, has replaced his brain for a piece of machinery. This is a strong message that Dadaist’s supported and lived by. Raoul himself is a dadaist.

Barbara’s work takes strong influences from her time as a graphic artist and interest in poetry. She highlights the issues around misogyny and abuse of power, using the iconography of advertising to convey her messages.
Kruger’s work is of interest to me as she doesn't ‘over work’ the page. Its clear as to the message and where your eye are lead. Her work touches on very sensitive subjects however they aren't offensive rather they are easing you to a topic.

Playing with collages from the daily graphic journal onto acetate. The images begin to take on their own characteristics when applied to a mirrored surface. This is something id like to explore within the publication

These a some of my favourite pieces. I love the clean silhouette in the background that is reinforced with the images above. There is not much to distract the eye, I feel confident that you are lead through the art.

I played around with photoshop to create this experiments with my own photos taken on a 35mm film camera. They consist of locations I walk by as well as local skateboarders. I have incorporated a bit of spray to 'break up' the overall composition

Spray n paint

Here I have concentrate solely on paint with spray. The solid colour backgrounds work better as it helps frame the stencil rather than distracting from it

This book stemmed from a meeting that both Neil Blender and Stacy Peralta were attending in 1983, they were incredibly bored so they passed notes between themselves. This continued for three decades. The book is a result of those conversations.
The notes and letters could have very easily been disregarded as just abit of fun for that time, but they kept an extensive collection to give us an insight of their lives at the time.

Here is a collection of my first few collages. My influences come from the skate culture as well as the art that is derived from skateboarders themselves.

I think the strongest images come from those using the spray cans. I am going to take this idea further by experimenting with collage using a photocopier along with continual use of spray paint.

The following short film was created by Spike Jonze, casting Mark Gonzales. The film is humorous, depicting how shoes end up in the gutter.
Aside from skateboarding, Mark is keen to express his creativity in other ways.
