A Winter Night in Hogsmeade

A starter for @lucklessladies

The sun had gone down hours ago, leaving in its wake an inky black sky dappled with shining white stars and falling snowflakes. It was late December, Christmas was coming very soon, and there was cheer in the air in a quiet sort of way. Like the flickering of a candle flame, an odd, homely kind of warm feeling sparked in Georgiana Barker’s chest as she walked along the snowy cobblestone street.

A couple with their gaggle of children walked out of Honeydukes, all laughter and smiles. The children were clinging on their parents‘ sleeves, their faces reddening from laughter and the chilly air outside. As joyful as the sight was, Georgiana’s stomach twisted painfully and she had to look away from the family that was bathed in the gentle glow of the store windows. Her heart ached in a feeling she didn’t feel often, or at least would never admit to such a thing. Her heart burned with something on the edge of jealousy and homesickness, a longing for a home she’d never really had.

The young witch walked briskly past the family, a dark cloud blooming in her usually so cheerful mind. She tried to scold herself for it - it’s not like she had ever really been... unhappy, not in a way that really mattered, but sometimes... sometimes she couldn’t help but wonder what it would have been like to grow up in a normal, whole, happy family. Not one where her most stable guardian was her older brother, still just a kid himself.

‘And he couldn’t even come with me,’ she thought to herself, frustration and loneliness staining her already lowering mood. Emmett had been called on ‘a very urgent case’, as he had been a lot lately, and Georgiana had left on her little trip by herself. Her poor brother had been just as stressed at work as she had been, the two had barely seen each other outside of work for weeks. And even though her vacation was a blessing - she could really use a break from her auror duties - it wasn’t starting very well.

A frustrated and mournful sigh created wispy clouds in the cold winter air. Her previously content mood ruined, Georgiana searched her surroundings with a solemn gaze until her eyes fell on the weathered sign of the nearest pub. ‘Might as well,’ she reasoned, shrugging her snow-covered shoulders before walking into the dimly lit pub, leaving behind the chilly evening air for the warmer, almost cozy bar.

Ignoring all other patrons, she walked up to the counter and sat on a teetering stool. With an uncharacteristically tired voice she mumbled her order: “A firewhisky, please.”

“It’s not safe here.”

“We’ve gotta go. Now.”

“Hey, how drunk are you?”

“Is that… a dead body?”

“What do you need me to do?”

“It’s not safe here, you should go.”

“I can’t believe you stole that!”

“Where’s the money you owe me?”

“Shit, the cops are coming!”

“Wait. I think I heard footsteps.”

“We shouldn’t be doing this.”

“The cops are looking for us.”

“What the fuck is that?!”

“You’re gonna get hurt.”

“Next time, I’ll kill you.”

“It’s my first time doing this.”

“You’re gonna get us caught.”

“You seriously got high without me?”

“You seriously got drunk without me?”

“I’m never doing this with you again.”

“How’d you get all this money?”

“What are you doing out here?”

“What if something goes wrong?”

“I have a bad feeling about this.”

“I’ve never gotten high before…”

“I’ve never gotten drunk before…”

“What the fuck did you do now?”

“Let’s go and do something bad.”

“Whatever it was, it wasn’t human.”

“So are we getting high, or what?”

“I’ll kill the asshole that did this to you.”

“It seems like you’ve done this before.”

“I have to be honest… this car is stolen.”

“What do you mean this isn’t your car?!”

“I shouldn’t have let you talk me into this.”

“What do you mean this isn’t your house?!”

“That’s… a lot of drugs you’ve got there.”

“Please tell me you brought a weapon with you.”

“We don’t have to do this, we can turn around.”

“How much time will they give us if we get caught?”

“Watch the door for me? I’ll be out in five minutes.”

“Maybe it’s the drugs, but I swear I heard someone…”

“This is literally the worst fucking time to hurt your leg!”

“Are you about to go do something illegal? Count me in.”

“The engine is dead and we’re in the middle of nowhere. Fucking great.”
