Gyaru-o Substyles Super Catalog! 👕
Just as Gyarus have many substyles so do Gyaru-o. Here is the super catalog for them!
It's important to understand that many of the styles are influenced by outside subcultures and styles then refined within Gyaru-os' subculture.
(This list will be periodically updated as well as content behind the links since only 30 images are aloud per post)
American Casual 'Amekaji'
A style inspired by American casual fashion with of course a Japanese twist.
Sometimes the colors used can be confused with surf style but amekaji began with warmer colors while surf style is always bright colors.

Adult
This is a more sophisticated but simple style. It's not meant to be flashy as it portrays maturity, one that is organized and well put together.

Punk

Military
This style got a lot of attraction. It's completely inspired by military wear of all nations. Forest colors, camos, cargos pants/jeans, all styles of military jackets by nation.

V-Hosu
This is a mashup of visual-kei and host style. Those of this style don't have to be hosts but some are.
It incorporates elegant shoes/boots, dress pants, vests, blazers, fancy scarfs, always the right accessories, and more.

Host-kei
You don't have to be a host to rock host attire, hence host-'kei' (Host style).
It basically what hosts wear while not being a host.

Worker
This style inspired by those who do laborious jobs like car mechanic, construction, and electrician etc.
The style incorporates sturdy boots, overalls, flannels, leather jackets, and more.

Salon-kei
"A style given to men working in the hair and beauty industry. The style is purposeful and focused on modern and new trends, and was created solely for men."
The style incorporates "detailed layering, especially of shirts and cardigans, as well as a focus on both beauty and quality in garments. Vintage pieces are very popular in this style, as are designer pieces or luxury items."
Salon-kei (Click for content)
Ora-Ora
Ora ora-kei is thought to be a continuation of the Yanki and Bōsōzoku gang culture. It leans towards a 'tough' and 'rebellious' look. In more recent times many Japanese MMA and Muy Thai fighters rock this style.
The style incorporates tracksuits, shorter hair cuts or slicked back, shades, rings and watches, clutches, and more!

Celebrity
Remember AOL, Sidekicks, and Ed Hardy? This style is the gyaru-o embodiment of those times, Y2K.

Outlaw
This style was established by Men's Egg. (I lost the issue but when I get it again I'll update this)
It's inspired by cowboy/outlaw attire. Cowboy hat, wild rags, western shirts, leather belt with a badass buckle, cowboy boots (pointed toes), bolo ties, leather vests, and bell bottom jeans rather than straight legged but some tuck them into their boots. Accessories can contain turquoise stones, rubies, gems, etc.
Gyaru-o Outlaw 'starter pack' (Click for content)
Trad (Traditional)
A style formed by Men's Egg in 2003.
It's a very plain and simple style, kinda what a chill dad would wear.
Traditional (Click for content)
Datewaru
'Flashy bad boy'
Formed by Men's Knuckle. It's edgier than onii-kei and more flamboyant than ora ora.
The style incorporates distressed jeans, fur trims, animal prints, camo. Stacking accessories and textures is important such as silvery jewelry, shades, and bandanas. Black and white accents are common as well as the color red, military green, and cheetah print.

Derika
Inspired by the word 'Psyche(delic)', referring to times of the 60-70's when hippies were widespread. Hippie fashion mixed with Onii-kei gives you Derika.
It incorporates bohemian motifs, bell bottom pants, loose tops, paisley patterns, layered jewelry made out of turquoise, beads, bones/fangs, and feathers, snakeskin boots, artisan leather, etc.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Retro
Inspired by the crazy patterns people of the disco in the 70-80s wore. I would say this is the following era of the the Derika style (Hippie style) of the 60-70s. Knowing this I'd refer to what was worn at discos rather than music festivals of the hippies.

Onii-kei
'Older brother style'
Imagine what your older brother as a teen would look like...

Onii-kei (Click for more content)
Sporty
Inspired by things athletes would wear; track jackets, narrow shades, breathable hats etc. This was popular amongst teens for a period of time.

Surfer
Gyaru-o version of what American surfers dress like.

KoGyaru-o
Preppy
UraShibu-kei/Kanji
Referring to the rave scene in the backstreets of Shibuya such as Shinsencho and Nanpeidaicho.
The fashion is made up of black and white clubwear with slogans printed on tight t-shirts, muscle tees, and vests; neon jerseys with psychedelic/trance-like graphics. It almost resembles ora-ora but less edgy.
Some brands include graphics of "trippy" philosophical double meaning kanji into their designs, hence the title 'Kanji'. Hindu and Buddhist motifs like mandalas are commonly used and dreadlocks are sometimes worn.
