āOh! Apologiesā¦I was there once when I was very young.ā A half truth that was technically correct. āI just meant that Iād like to go back to see how it turned into the Manhattan of England, so to speak.ā
Sammy picked up his Cosmo again, sipping it down a bit more as he listened to her speak. The way she made it sound, the busyness of the city was simply too much for her; she preferred things to be more quiet. Why exactly she would come here as opposed to just going back to Worthing did puzzle him a littleā¦but who was he to pry about her past? Especially if he didnāt have permission to.
āWorthingās in the North, right?ā he asked before moving on. āAt any rate, Iām glad any part of this place is reminding you of back home. Homesickness can be a terrible thing.ā
Not that he would know; he didnāt have a definitive āhomeā to go back to.
āIāll be sure to tell everyone about your Cosmosā¦if youād like to me,ā he assured. āIn any caseā¦I should probably reciprocate and tell you a little about myself, too, right?ā
Well, this was new. Sammy had been in this town for decades, knew every building and person in it inside and out, and yet, as he stopped at the bar this late afternoon, needing some sort of pick me up after having not gotten much sleep, he noticed a blue haired woman heād never seen before tending bar.
Time to be a nice, conversational customer, instead of the drunks she probably usually got.
āHi,ā he began somewhat breathlessly as he sat down, hand raised in a hello. āIāll have a Cosmopolitan, please.ā

As it happened, Pari hadn't even been working there for very long. So perhaps the other may not have come across her when she'd been working there.
But there was also a first time for everything.
She'd heard the other approach, a raised eyebrow and a smile on her face.
"A Cosmo! Awesome choice. Mind you, you're lucky we actually have the stuff to make it. Usually we don't do cocktails. Grab a seat, make yourself comfy."

āI was just about to ask if youāre originally from the U.K,ā Sammy admitted, āAlthough I guess your accent made it obvious. Iāve always wanted to go there myself and see how it is nowadaysā¦ā
Ignoring his own strange phrasing, he took another sip of the Cosmopolitan. āThis is very well made, Miss Vass,ā he complimented. āIām enjoying it. Have you been bartending for a while?ā
He set down the drink for a moment and looked around, at the cozy bar in this cozy town that he had grown intimately familiar with over the past several decades. āWell, this is a good town to get away from a big city in, thatās for sure. Quiet most days, no towering skyscrapersā¦itās the complete opposite of London, Iād say.ā
Well, this was new. āHit or miss?!ā Davey seems personally offended by the idea that 70s music might not all be good, although thereās something lighthearted about the way he says it so she knows heās joking. āThere was lots of good stuff from that time, man! I mean, a lot of it was from 60s musicians who were still making music the next decade, but stillā¦ā
He crosses a leg over the over. āSixties are where itās at for me. Thatās where Dylan got his start. Heās, uhā¦ā He seems even more sheepish than usual admitting this. āBit of an idol of mine.ā
āAre thoseā¦flowers in your hair?ā
The question is posed innocently by a long haired man with a hat on, a guitar case over his shoulder. He seemsā¦a little sleepy, somehow, but his eyes are focused.
āFirst time Iāve ever seen somethinā like that thatās not in a picture. Groovy.ā As if temporarily aware of his own awkwardness, he then clarifies himself with a sheepish smile. āIt looks nice.ā

Weary hues adjust their focus , drawn from her maladaptive daydreaming by the male's voice . How long she'd been like this god knows , but clearly the environment is responsible . Maybe she shouldn't have ventured here without Spud . Sure the mall has lots to do , but it's incredibly overwhelming for someone who hadn't set foot in one for almost three years .
Oh yeah , the flowers . . .
A subtle graze over one adorning her left ear follows the soft 'oh' from the cherub , lips drawing a more visible smile as she speaks .
ā Merci. . . forgot I still had them . ā

āAppleā¦yes, thatās what it was,ā he muses positively. āSomething apple flavored always tastes so different from an actual appleā¦ā
Sammy takes another sip, now that sheās described the specific things that are in it. Heās trying to identify each ingredientā¦he definitely tastes the cinnamon and caramel. To him, the cinnamon is a wee bit stronger than the caramel, but as long as it wasnāt overpowering, it didnāt matter to him.
āIām always impressed by people who make their own teaā¦it must be such a delicate thing to do.ā He takes one more sip before setting it down, for now. āIāll have to come here again and try more. Whatās your name?ā
āThis is some pretty good tea,ā the man admits after having waited several minutes to actually try drinking it. It seems like heās had bad experiences with fresh-out-of-the-kettle hot tea. āWhat kind is it? Or do you make it yourself? If so, thatās really impressive.ā
(From Sammy! @rubysramblers )
@rubysramblers
āGlad to hear ya think so,ā there was a slight guilty sound to her voice, unable to hide it--this sometimes happened that her teas were too hot to drink. It wasn't the first time and certainly wouldn't be the last; Mellie was more than certain of that.

āI do make most of 'em myself, so I'll take that as a compliment. I was experimentin' and went 'or a caramel apple. There's red rooibos, cinnamon chips and caramel chips in there. Honestly, I was a bit worried I'd over done it a bit with both flavours.ā

At those words, a load besides the guitar heās carrying seems to come off of his shoulders. He hates it when people hold grudges for stupid reasons, and heās happy that wonāt be the case right now. Thankful for her understanding, he flashes a peace sign.
āAll good, fine lady,ā he says, not as a flirt but as a compliment. āAnd, uhā¦Iāll take that advice. Next time I might hit a plant or vase or somethinā, heheā¦ā
Thatās when he suddenly looks her up and down, squinting a little as he tries to recall something. āā¦Have I seen you at the movies? N-Not servinā popcorn, I meanā¦like, in the movies. On the screen.ā

Carolyn shoots a dirty look at the stranger before very forcefully dusting herself off. In truth it didn't even hurt all that bad, but she still has a tendency to be, well, a diva.
She huffs before readjusting her attitude. She usually tried her best to be nice, she had a reputation to upkeep after all, but she did have a nasty temper on her. Thankfully the joke he cracks about tripping does get a little laugh out of her. āI'm fine, no hard feelings.ā She said, giving him her award wining (literally) grin. āSorry about all that, I have a tendency to be a little dramatic sometimes.ā More like all the time. āI think you'd better hang onto that case a little tighter, though.ā

āYou should keep āem on. They look good against your brown hair like that.ā
His voice was hard to place, not fully Southern, but just enough. It seemed to compliment his awkwardness and turn it into something more charming. He, too, laughed a little.
āMy parents would show me these big olā picture books they had, yāknow?ā He gestured with his hands to show their size. āThey were full of hippies with flowers and branches and anything else you can imagine in their hair. What a time that mustāve beenā¦ā
He took the guitar case from his back and put it off to the side, having gotten the feeling heād probably be chatting here for a while. āā¦They were actually around during that time,ā he finished.

Sammyās eyebrows would raise slightly throughout their conversation, mainly due to her stranger turns of phrase. Perhaps she was just incredibly into that part of history, but there was also something about the glimmer in her eyes that made it seem she had done a lot more than just worn out old records. Still, though, he would respond in kind.
āā¦Yes. It was the revival from a few years ago, obviously. But I do enjoy learning about that period of history.ā He smirked a little bit. āTo think there was a time when his song āLetās Misbehaveā was considered scandalous.ā
His radio bosses from back then would pass out if they could see how much skin it was acceptable for a woman to show had evolved.
āEvery generation has that turning point where the previous generation gets mad at them for one reason or another. Itās inevitable, I suppose.ā He sighed. āYou may be right about there being a cycle, but stillā¦it causes so much grief and anger each timeā¦
āF-From what Iāve read, I mean.ā
Now it was his turn to cover up his mistake.
@rubysramblers continued from x
It's the music that draws Carolyn over to the stranger, an old, familiar tune that she hasn't heard in quite a while. The former starlet tends to avoid relics of her past these days. It turns out immortality gets much harder if you can't let go of the past. Even so, the draw of nostalgia is a powerful on.
āOh no need to explain, it's a wonderful song. I'm glad people are still enjoying it.ā She muses, taking in the tune again. She always did like Cole Porter. He had even scored one of her films back in the day, and what a marvelous film is was. A frown flickers across her face momentarily as her thoughts stray too close to her lost glory days, but she steers them back to the song itself. āHave you seen the musical? It's a marvelous show.ā
The strangers continued thoughts gather a chuckle from Carolyn. āWell I can hardly blame them, progress was going very fast. It was enough to make your head spin sometimes.ā She pauses, realizing her choice of words was perhaps a bit odd. āI mean, if you look at the history of the time. I can only assume what it was like.ā She gives another laugh at his apology, waving it off with a smile. āOh don't apologize, dear, I appreciate good chatter. And you're correct, humanity does cycle ever so often. I suppose you just can't change the core of humanity.ā

āUnderstandable,ā he agreed, trying to sweeten himself up with a tiny smirk as he did so. He knew his usual demeanor could sometimes seem off putting to people who were new, or didnāt usually talk to him. āThis is a smaller bar, compared to some that are across town. Not exactly a lot of space to put every juice and alcohol in the world behind the barā¦point is, I get it.ā
Heād stick out a hand for a proper hand shake as she finished mixing his drink. āGood to meet you, Pari. If you need anything, big or small, townsfolk will point you my way, Iām sure.ā
When he had the drink in his hand-it looked very well made, despite how quickly it was put together-heād say one more thing before taking a sip. āLiking town so far?ā
Heād say something about her British accent in a second, when they were more well established.
Well, this was new. Sammy had been in this town for decades, knew every building and person in it inside and out, and yet, as he stopped at the bar this late afternoon, needing some sort of pick me up after having not gotten much sleep, he noticed a blue haired woman heād never seen before tending bar.

āSorry, man,ā he apologizes, voice entirely too casual for both the womanās angry demeanor and words and the fact that heād sort of rammed into her with his guitar case. At least she hadnāt been knocked off of her feetā¦although he still felt some amount of embarrassment about it anyway.
āI didnāt realize my guitar had that much weight behind it,ā he says further, trying to immediately make amends. āIām usually pretty good about keepinā it behind meā¦guess it decided to trip out just like me.ā No, he was not under any sort of influence, but of course he wouldnāt clarify that immediately. āYouā¦alright?ā

ā is there a reasons youāre here on your own ? ā - carolyn to sammy
Sammy jumps a little bit from the sudden noise; heād been quite absorbed listening to an old, jazzy tune on his phone before sheād spoken. After realizing itās just someone, perhaps rightly, asking what heās doing listening to such an old song all by himself, he shrugs a little and answers.
āNot reallyā¦I just got nostalgic for-uh, something my grandparents used to play,ā he explains, the excuse flowing out of him after a brief pause. The nostalgia was real, but the truth as to why was a little more complicated than that.
āIsnāt it fascinating how, even all those years ago, people were complaining about how fast the times were changing? And people would make songs making fun of said people?ā Noticing how heās rambling a little, unusual for Sammy, he looks away for a moment. āSorryā¦I guess I was just thinking lately about how the more things change, the more they stay the same. Ironically enough.ā

āMaybe I just wanted to stand and watch the river run,ā Natalie shoots back, accusatory even though the nice fellow only asked a simple question. āHow about that? There doesnāt have to be an elaborate reason for everything.ā
Ignore the fact that thereās currently a bright pink heart locket on one of the rocks thatās sticking out. Also ignore the fact that in a few minutes, it will reappear on her neck like nothing happened. Indeed, there was an elaborate reason for her being here.

āOh, uhā¦thanks, man,ā he replied sheepishly, accepting his hat back gratefully. He had simply taken it off to feel the breeze blowing through his hair, and had absentmindedly left it on the bench. Despite his choice of words, his tone was quite gracious, if a little loopy.
āYouāre a man of hats, too, arenāt ya? No wonder you noticed mine missing,ā Davey says, trying to find common ground. āThatās the kinda hat themā¦whatās their nameā¦that them quartet singers wear! With the harmonies and stuff? Yeah, that.ā

Sammy nodded back at her in response, sitting down and shifting around in his seat a little bit until he was comfortable. The types of alcohol that he drank were few, considering that hisā¦unique, circumstances sometimes make alcohol hard to process or keep down. But he found that the somewhat slimy, somewhat sweet nature of vodka went down well most of the time. Wine as well, but that wasnāt relevant to the current situation.
His own eyebrows raised slightly as he talked to her while she mixed the drink. āThatās why I ordered it,ā he clarified. āIāveā¦been here several times before.ā More like hundreds, across all of his decades.
āI try to make sure everyone new in town knows who I am, so I can be there if they need anything. Anything at all.ā He would meet her eyes for a moment so she would know he was being serious about that fact. āIām Sammy Peters.ā
