You ask me if there'll come a time
When I grow tired of you
Never, my love
Never, my love
You wonder if this heart of mine
Will lose its desire for you
Never, my love
Never, my love
What makes you think love will end?
When you know that my whole life depends
On you (on you)
Ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba (ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba)
Never, my love
Never, my love
You say you fear I'll change my mind
I won't require you
Never, my love
Never, my love
How can you think love will end
When I've asked you to spend your whole life
With me? (with me, with me)
Never, my love (never, my love)
Never, my love
Never, my love (never, my love)
Never, my love
Never, my love

OUTLANDER FILMING LOCATIONS: CLAIRE’S DREAM HOME IN REAL LIFE May 17, 2020  Posted by
Andrée Poppleton
Claire’s Dream House played a vital role in explaining her trauma in the Outlander Season 5 finale. We take a look at the actual house that served as part of the set.
I don’t know about you but so much of the Outlander Season 5 finale episode is still floating around in my head. From the gruesome images of Claire’s abduction, to her escape into the virtual dream world she created, and the haunting use of that ’60s classic by The Association, it was a smashing episode in every way. To follow on from my colleague Karen Rutledge’s post on the Outlander Easter Eggs in “Never My Love.” I would like to take a look at the place where Claire’s dream home was created.
Tumblr media
Claire’s Dream Home in North Carolina; they gave us a tiny glimpse of it in the title card for “Perpetual Adoration.”
This was so cleverly deployed as a cinematic device in the show. Sam Heughan told us ahead of time that the episode was ‘stylised’ so we knew to expect the unusual. But this was something so original that no one could have predicted. To show that victims of trauma and abuse may dissociate — to retreat into a space where they are “out of body” and take refuge from pain — Claire created a comforting world where she saw all her loved ones as happy and whole, their perfect selves, if you will.
Tumblr media
But every now and then of course, the real world crept in and threatened Claire’s safe space. (ugh! Lionel)
Tumblr media
The dream home is, in fact an ‘A-listed’ historic building in Scotland. Pitcorthie House is a mid-century masterpiece designed by internationally acclaimed British architect Trevor Dannat, and built in 1966. The house is set on a 46-acre estate with gardens, woodlands and spectacular sea views. Stopping right there for a moment, this place reminded me very much of my childhood/teen years home in Australia, and filled me with nostalgia. My mother was a fan of modernism in the ’60s/70s and our décor with its stark white walls and the furnishings were very similar, except that our home was filled with every kind of Marimekko fabric and design.
Tumblr media
The house by day and by night – the Outlander crew used it very effectively for day and night-time scenes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The house was used to stunning effect to create Claire’s refuge, and it’s interesting to see which features were changed for the production and which were left in place. In his post-episode conversation with Toni Graphia, Matt Roberts said that the space was amorphous; it started in the ’60s and then became timeless.
Tumblr media
As the house was built in 1966 the ambience was perfect, and with the Outlander set finishings and furnishings you can see influences of the 1970s. It seems that the production team were specifically trying to create a warm feel to the space using the rich autumn-toning colour palette.
Tumblr media
The house features sliding panels which can divide all the rooms – and you can see the original colour scheme is much different to the set design – all white
The house was featured in Country Life Magazine in 1968

The living area features a simple but stylish low mantel over the fireplace and a backing stone wall
Tumblr media
In these images from the show you can see the stone wall, the original side board in use and also the fireplace and mantel (looks like they cut the corners off!)
Tumblr media
They even used the wicker basket
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You can see the distinctive square downlighting in this image of Jamie with a view out to the beautiful grounds, and in the night-time view of Claire

You can see the original sideboard behind Jocasta (she can see!)
Tumblr media
Personal note again: The whole dining area experience evoked more childhood memories. I remember my mother’s joy when she took delivery of her treasured teak dining setting (it’s in my home now). Today we would call it retro but back then it was just mod.
Tumblr media
The warm colour scheme introduced by the production team creates a cosy family atmosphere. Note the funky “antique” look wall behind Jamie (very ’70s). Back then we used to paint our furniture like that (gaaaaah!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This Outlander set is one of Jon Gary Steele‘s final triumphs on Outlander. It may not be one of his magnificent built-from-scratch sets (the Great Hall in Castle Leoch and King Louis‘ Star Chamber come to mind) but this is something truly unique and complementary to an original filming concept. The rich warm design and attention to every little detail created a space where Claire/Caitriona Balfe could offset the horrendous events that were going on in her “real life”.
Bring on every kind of award for the actors, designers, producers, writers, cinematographers for Outlander Season 5. Now, back to #droughtlander! (sob!)
VERY IMPORTANT POST SCRIPT: This story would not have been possible without the incredible research skills and efforts of (Crafty) Christine Lewis . She missed her calling as a researcher or detective (!). In the words of that well known historian Roger MacKenzie, she‘s like a dog with a bone, or, in her own words, problem-solving is her wheelhouse. Thank you Crafty.
Also, acknowlegements to Outlander STARZ and Aimee Spinks for still images from the show.
What did you think of Claire’s dream house? Did any of it look familiar to you? How effective was it in portraying Claire’s trauma?

Robert Doisneau - Le Baiser de l'Hotel de Ville, Paris, 1950. The kissed girl, Françoise Bornet, died this week at the age of 93. Althought Doisneau was a street photographer, he later admitted that the photo was staged. As a reward the model received a signed print of the nowadays world famous image.

And what will you do now, my blue-eyed son? And what'll you do now, my darling young one? I'm a-going back out 'fore the rain starts a-falling I'll walk to the depths of the deepest dark forest Where the people are many and their hands are all empty Where the pellets of poison are flooding their waters Where the home in the valley meets the damp dirty prison And the executioner's face is always well hidden Where hunger is ugly, where the souls are forgotten Where black is the color, where none is the number And I'll tell it and speak it and think it and breathe it And reflect from the mountain so all souls can see it And I'll stand on the ocean until I start sinking But I'll know my song well before I start singing And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard It's a hard rain's a-gonna fall
-Bob Dylan
Seems especially relevant now.

Poem of the  Day 8 March 2021
Out of Catullus | BY RICHARD CRASHAW Come and let us live my Deare, Let us love and never feare, What the sowrest Fathers say: Brightest Sol that dies to day Lives againe as blithe to morrow, But if we darke sons of sorrow Set; o then, how long a Night Shuts the Eyes of our short light! Then let amorous kisses dwell On our lips, begin and tell A Thousand, and a Hundred, score An Hundred, and a Thousand more, Till another Thousand smother That, and that wipe of another. Thus at last when we have numbred Many a Thousand, many a Hundred; Wee’l confound the reckoning quite, And lose our selves in wild delight: While our joyes so multiply, As shall mocke the envious eye.

Outlander season 2, recap:
Everyone needs a Murtagh in her/his/their life : as brother, friend, lover, whatever
In Paris AD 1745 carriages drift just like in Fast and Furious
Angus ❤️
Murtagh was right: it would have been better to slit Prince Charles' throat in Paris
Last episode: FUCK.

If I have to endure 200 years of purgatory, 200 years without you, then that is my punishment that I have earned for my crimes, for I have lied, killed, stolen, betrayed and broken trust.
