Rudra abhishek pooja -Uma Upadhye, 75, is pottering around her apartment in Thane. She has been up since dawn, completing household chores and getting things in order for a laghu rudra puja, performed to worship Shiva, in her house. “What happened at Shanishingnapur was wrong. Why should women be disallowed from any premise of a temple?” says Upadhye.

On November 29, when a woman entered the chauthara (platform) to offer prayers to the idol at the Shanishingnapur temple in Maharashtra’s Ahmednagar district, horrified priests performed a “purification” ritual , which in turn, caused an outcry. Upadhye has reason for taking umbrage — she is a priest, learned in the rites to perform Hindu marriages, funerals, pujas and the Vedas; a woman in a field dominated by men.

“In all these years, not once has anyone questioned or criticised me for performing the puja even though I am a woman. My experience has been that Maharashtra, at least the urban belt, is quite progressive. Satisfied with her preparations for the puja, the septuagenarian sits ramrod straight, declaiming Sanskrit mantras in a clear, strong voice; 10 other women priests accompany her. She makes an offering of flowers, sacred threads, vermilion, performs a doodh abhishek, cleansing the deity with milk, and lights an incense stick. Upadhye spends the next couple of hours in deep concentration.

Upadhye is one of several women in Maharashtra who, over the past two decades, have mastered the scriptures, attained priesthood, and regularly travel to offer their services. “We are more sincere than our male counterparts. It could be because we are more devoted to god, but it is also because we have a constant fear of being judged for being a woman doing what has historically been a man’s job,” says Upadhye, seated in her prayer room, a small enclosure in her two-bedroom apartment.Udaka shanti pooja

Upadhye’s day begins at 5.30 am to prepare breakfast and lunch for her 80-year-old husband, a lawyer who still practices; she also packs a tiffin for her daughter, a doctor. After cleaning the house, she performs an elaborate puja. Then, she steps out to perform her duties as a priest.

Today, at least 25 families spread across Thane, Dombivali and Badlapur regularly call her home to perform a number of rituals, especially laghu rudras and maha rudras for Shiva, and sahastravartan for Ganesh.

On days that she does not have to venture out, she spends her time revising and reciting her scriptures. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, she sharpens her recitation of the rudras, verses for Shiva; on Sundays, it is the saurasukta for the sun, and on other days, it is the Ganapati Atharvasheersha, and Sri Sukta and the Purusha Sukta, verses in the Rig Veda.

A few days later, as the laghu rudra puja finally draws to a close, she draws a swastika on the wooden chaurang and offers a plate of pedas in front of the idol. The small stack of books filled with Sanskrit verses that she had kept next to her as a reference has mostly remained untouched. With an effort, she heaves herself up, letting out a relieved sigh, as the blood returns to her legs, cramped sore from sitting continuously for nearly three hours. “Please sit on a chair the next time,” a younger woman purohit says to Upadhye. She firmly retorts, “Absolutely not. As long as my body works, I will do everything properly. It is, after all, god’s grace.”

Now, do abhishek with water on Shiv Linga or Shiva’s Moorti. Chant ‘OM’ or ‘OM Namah Shivaya’ while doing the Abhishek.

Shravan Somwar Vrat or Monday fast begins with the worshipper waking up early morning. After taking a holy bath and individuals observing fast should wear white colour. It is highly beneficial if the person can visit Lord Shiva temple in the morning and the evening while keeping Somvar Vrat. Begin the puja with Abhishekam, meaning ‘to have bath’. It could be as simple as Jal Abhishek, which is pouring water on the Shiva lingam or Shivling. When Abhishekam is offered to Lord Shiva, it is called Rudra Abhishek. Doing Panchamrut or Panchamrit or Charnamrit Abhishek is also an excellent way to please Mahadeva. Panchamrut is prepared by mixing – Milk, Curd, Ghee (clarified butter), Honey and Sugar. When pouring milk on the shivling as an offering, do make sure that it is not pasteurized or packet milk. Please make sure always to use ice cold milk. In the evening a story related to Somavar Vrat is listened to or read by those observing the fast. Meaning Shiva’s night, Maha Shivaratri falls on Chaturdashi Tithi during Krishna Paksha in month of Magha in the South Indian calendar or the Amavasyant Hindu lunar calendar. However according to North Indian calendar or the Poornimant lunar calendar, Maha Shivaratri is the Masik(monthly) Shivaratri in month of Phalguna. Maha Shivaratri 2017 Tithi:

According to Drikpanchang.com, the Chaturdashi Tithi Begins at 21:38 PM on February 24 and end at 21:20 PM on the next day (February 25).

Maha Shivaratri 2017 Puja Timings:

The best time to do Puja on Mahashivaratri is known as the Nishikant Kaal Puja. This is that time when the Lord Shiva is believed to have appeared on earth in the form of a Shiva Linga. This year, the Nishita Kaal Puja time is between 12:10 AM to 12:59 AM on February 25.

Maha Shivaratri 2017 Prahar timings:

The first Prahar Puja starts at 18:29 PM to 21:32 PM.

Second Prahar Puja starts at 21:32 PM to 12:35 AM.

Ratri Third Prahar Puja Time = 12:35 AM to 03:37 AM.

Ratri Fourth Prahar Puja Time = 03:37 AM+ to 6:40 AM.

Here’s when you can break your fast – 06:40 AM to 15:32 PM on February 25.

Maha Shivaratri Puja Vidhi

Take bath before doing Puja or visiting a temple.

Purify home and Puja area by sprinkling Gangajal.

Light a brass or an earthen lamp.

Sit down with your eyes closed and invite Lord Shiva to accept your offerings. (You or your family priest can do the Pran Pratishthan by invoking the God in your idol).

Now, do abhishek with water on Shiv Linga or Shiva’s Moorti. Chant ‘OM’ or ‘OM Namah Shivaya’ while doing the Abhishek.

Then do Abhishek with Milk, Dahi, followed by Honey, Ghee (clarified butter) and water again.

Use a fresh piece of cloth of gently wipe the Shiv Linga or Idol.

Use the sacred ash (Vibhuti) or bhasm and make a Tripundra on the Lord’s Forehead or on the Shiv Linga. (The Tripundra is the three famous horizontal mark). Put a Chandan tika in the centre of the horizontal line in the middle. And then add kumkum teeka. Add Bel or Vilva leaves and flowers.

Light incense sticks and dhoop.

Then offer fruits and dry fruits to the God.

Then chant the Shiva Chalisa or the 108 names of Lord Shiva or any simple Shiva Mantra.

Meditate for a while.

Conclude the Puja by singing the Shiva Aarti.

Maha Shivratri 2017: Significance, how to celebrate, muhurat, puja vidhi and auspicious timings

Rudra abhishek pooja -Maha Shivratri is an auspicious Hindu Festival dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva and in 2017 it is being observed on the evening of February 24. It is believed that worshiping Lord Shiva on the auspicious day helps to get rid of all the sins and hence making it one of the important festivals. It is also said that it is the day when Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati got married, thus bringing together two greatest forces of the universe.

Prayer ceremonies

(Udaka shanti pooja )Shiv Linga, aniconic representation of the Hindu deity, is bathed with water, milk and honey and offered fruits, flowers and bel (wood apple) leaves. Devotees observe fast, worship Lord Shiva by chanting ‘Om Namah Shiva’ and keep vigil all night. People also chant ‘Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra’ to seek blessings of the lord. ‘Maha Rudra Abhishek’ is also performed to impress the god in his ‘rudra’ form. The mantras dwells Vedic scriptures and helps to remove negative energy and transform it in to peace and joy.

Maha Shivaratri 2017: Vrat Vidhi, Puja Timing in India

Rudra abhishek pooja-Maha Shivratri usually falls on the 13th night and 14th day of the New Moon. Based on the Hindu luni-solar calendar, the festival is celebrated for three to ten days.

Celebrated every year in the honor of the Hindu God, Shiva the meaning of the word ‘Shivratri’ literally translates to the meaning, ‘Great night of Shiva’. Dedicated in the worship of Lord Shiva, Maha Shivratri is one of most auspicious festival for Hindus across India and abroad. Mostly on this night, Hindus chant prayers, keep fasts and meditates to honor Lord Shiva. Among most Hindus, it is believed that on this holy day, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati got married, thus bringing together two great forces. Hence, this day is also believed to be the convergence of Shiva and Shakti. (Udaka shanti pooja) And as Hindus from all over the country get enchanted with the discovery of the Hindu God, his values, ethics and virtues like self-restraint, honesty, forgiveness and others, it is believed that by worshiping this holy night of Shiva people get rid of their sins. Rudra abhishek pooja -On the day of Shivratri devotees wake up early morning to take bath and fast for the whole day. Devotees bath the Shiv Linga, which is considered as a representation of Lord Shiva, with water, milk and honey and offer fruits, flowers and bel leaves (wood apple leaves). Hindus in groups of many chants ‘Om Namah Shiva’ and the ‘Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra’ and perform ‘Maha Rudra Abhishek’ to impress Lord Shiva. The mantras which originate from the vedic scriptures are believed to convert negative energy into peace and joy.
