How do you know if you’re a small, medium, or large-sized head for a hat?

Like, I have a relatively largish head, proportionately, and I’m going to be wearing a wig… But I don’t know that that would qualify me for a large-size hat? or even bigger?

How do you figure out what size hat you wear when the hat sizes are relative and not numerical?
