it's super frustrating to me that the long-covid activists who have burst onto the disability advocacy scene have this pattern of being, like... totally uninterested in disability solidarity and community care beyond their claims about masking being The Most Important Intervention For Disabled People (factually inaccurate, air filtration is, and y'all have already heard my rants about how the "mask up ONLY and before ANYTHING else" shit is actively harming high-risk people lol).

like... the masking thing seems tied to that, tbh! like there's this scene of single-issue activists that only talk to each other, only get resources from each other, and rhetorically claim to be organizing for All Of Disability, so when the pre-existing advocacy & solidarity network provides information on how their tactics are harmful and not actually achieving the goals they're looking to achieve... there's just not a way that information could be taken well and translated into material action.

but it's like, a larger issue, obviously. like a lot of these activists make outright violently ableist claims about childhood development milestones and suggested courses of action for early childhood intervention (under the argument that covid is damaging infants' brains so severely, it is causing developmental delays); if you have solidarity with developmentally disabled people, you won't be advocating for increased pipelines to institutionalization and behavioral therapies. or hell, even the complete lack of engagement with pre-existing networks of solidarity for ME/postviral illness is really concerning; a lot of these activists are constructing from first principles theories that ME communities have been openly discussing for decades at this point! people are completely missing invaluable, necessary information because there's so little intentional solidarity and outreach and efforts to learn from the people who have already been here for decades. a lot of long covid activists don't even know that long covid is just another manifestation of postviral illness.

Japanese has a process called rendaku (連濁, "connect" + "voiced") in which the initial consonant of the second word in a compound becomes voiced, or pronounced with the vocal chords vibrating. For example, you say "sometimes" by duplicating the word for time, toki (時). But the second toki has its voiceless [t] changed to a voiced [d]: tokidoki (時々). This would be like if "pancake" got pronounced as "pangake."

That's what happens to make [saɴ] + [ha] = [samba]: [ha] "tooth" is the second word in the compound, and so becomes voiced.

"But Drake," readers who know phonetics will say, "Why is [h] becoming [b]? Isn't its voiced equivalent just [ɦ]? [b] is a really different sound."

Well, yes, it is! But Japanese /h/ actually comes from historic *p. That *p started to get pronounced more like an f sound made with both lips, [ɸ]. Then, before vowels besides [u] (which is a vowel made with rounded lips), it started just being pronounced at the back of the mouth: [h]!

But many compound words were made before this shift happened, so *p changed to [b] just like [t] would change to [d]. As the sound change took place over generations, people didn't stop saying the compound words differently – [b] was fine how it was, after all. And enough evidence of this alteration remained that [h] → [b] is just How It Works now. This allows [ha] to become [ba] and turn a trident into samba！
