▵ — Lily breathed a fake sigh of relief when James let up, and Harry’s own little hands weren’t capable of doing much. When James scooped him back up a part of her was almost bummed about it, but she leaned up anyway, propping herself up with both hands and looking over at her husband and her son, a few laughs still escaping through her breathlessness. “ You did hear me when I said you guys were grounded, right? ” she demanded, but her lips were curled into a wide smile when she did.

      “ Mummy did make pancakes, which is the only thing that mummy can make, for that matter. So, you’re welcome, both of you, and you’re lucky that I love you both more than I dread being tickled, ” Lily said, feigning sternness as she reached over for a plate of her own. “ You know, good little boys don’t eat on their father’s head, ” she commented, trying not to smile and give herself away in her amusement. When James told Harry not to get crumbs in his hair, she shrugged. “ A few crumbs would be alright. ”

⎯   ✴︎ James turned his head, moving Harry with it when Lily asked her question about them hearing her. He shrugged, bouncing Harry a little in the motion. “We heard you, we’re just not sure what you mean. I’m on the ground, Harry’s on me, so I say we’re grounded. Or do you mean confined to the car, staring out the windows with pathetic and sad expressions on our faces?”

         He laughed a bit turning forward once more to get a better angle at his plate. “If you didn’t love us, would you be eating them all on your own or let Dragon have some?” he questioned, sure Dragon would be after them eventually anyway. He glanced over to see the cat pretend not to be interested, but if he wasn’t he’d be farther away from the meal. “Good boys only eat on their fathers head because they deserve to be up there.” He smirked a little before taking a bite of his pancakes. He then turned to face Lily again, but this time a bit more careful with the food on his head. “Are the crumbs snacks for later?”

▵ — “ Sirius is the only person in the world I can think of who could manage to get himself out of that somehow. Hold on - you’re actually asking? Do you mean to tell me you haven’t realized it? You haven’t realized that we’re literally the same exact person, ‘cept I have boobs and you’ve got a knob? ”

⎯  ✴︎ “ It’s perfect. Sirius and Grant. They’ll both be the ones to get out of it, and they want dragons almost as much as us I’m sure so it’ll be easy for everyone to believe they’re capable. I suppose I may have realized it, but I didn’t pursue it since I figured there could only be one pair of people that are exactly the same in the same century. I was worried the Earth would implode.”

▵ — “ Don’t be daft. You’re not my mistress, you’re my first love. As far as that information goes, you haven’t yet earned it, Mr. Evans, because I’m not sure I trust you. Not after you spread that rumor about me and dogs. It still gives me headaches. ”

⎯  ✴︎ “ First love doesn’t always mean I’m not your mistress. Georgie could be your current love and I your old flame. Well, in all fairness you did tell Harry where babies come from and specifically where he came from. And I sincerely doubt anything you could say about Georgie and yourself is quite on that level. I told you everything about Lily and I. It’s what first loves are supposed to do. ”

▵ — Lily smiled when James jabbed at his young perception of marriage - another example of how different they were. She’d known since she was young that she wanted to be married someday. When she and her sister were very small, before everything fell apart and their relationship was left in shambles, they would talk about the person they thought they’d marry, and what the wedding would look like. Petunia, of course, had always been Lily’s maid of honor, but the reality was that her sister didn’t even show her face at the wedding. But the rest she’d been right about: she’d married the most wonderful man on the planet - handsome, smart, loving, the most caring person she’d ever met, funny, and, best of all, hers.

      Of course, not all of it was expected. Lily’s fifteen-year-old self would have laughed out loud had someone tried to tell her she would marry James Potter one day. It would have happened anyway.

      Lily laughed - a real, genuine laugh - when he latched onto the dragon comment, looking at him with a cheeky smile. “ Sure. If by some chance we actually live in a chocolate house, we’ve already beat the incredible odds stacked against us, so why not have a dragon? If that were to ever happen. ”

      Lily squeezed his hand gently, lovingly, grateful for his reassurance. She wasn’t sure how much she believed it, wasn’t even sure how much James himself believed it, but hearing the words was a comfort nonetheless. Something they could hold onto and look forward to. Something to keep them going, even after three long years already. “ You plan on turning him into the little Quidditch player you are, huh? Wouldn’t it be funny if he didn’t even end up a chaser? ” She asked, teasing, and looked down at their son. “ What do you think, huh? D’you want to be a troublemaking chaser like your father? ”

⎯   ✴︎ It should be clearer than anything to James that he had in fact changed, that he was constantly changing. He was learning new things, experiencing new things to add to learning new things. And he was definitely still him in his base, but things were different. And that was supposed to happen naturally with people. Except he didn’t really think he was better all the time. And he’d voiced it out loud followed by the quick reassurance of Lily every time, but it was happening less and less frequently.

         “This sounds like a challenge.” He was sure she hadn’t meant for it to sound like that, but he considered this a challenge made, and he was taking it up. “I will be getting that dragon. I feel it fair to war you now.”

         He was happy to have shifted the conversation to quidditch ( even if he has started the other one too ) and let the feeling of this world falling apart slip from his shoulders once more. Talk about quidditch always was easy. It spoke to a simpler time and Hogwarts. “No. I don’t think it would be funny. It would be a travesty. What do you think he’d be? A beater? Are you sure you’d like that? Our son’s job would be to attack murder balls. Keeper? I saw more of them fall of their broom from rough play and missed quaffles than anyone else. Seeker? If he has my eyesight, certainly not.” He then looked down at Harry when Lily asked him and he smiled up at them brightly. “Sirius said beaters were the best on the team.”

▵ — She loved when he called her Potter. She’d never tell him that, naturally - but she loved it all the same. Besides, she was sure he knew well enough when he caught her grinning not-so-secretly every time it came out of his dumb mouth.

      There were some moments that were so happy, so perfect, that Lily had to admit to herself they wouldn’t have been possible were it not for the horror around her, and for that, she was twice as grateful for them. On an average day, in an average time, this would have been common ( she was sure of that much ). They’d be having fun, her and her boys, enjoying life, going to and from work and having dinners with people. But what with all the darkness outside of their wards, this felt more perfect than it probably was, and she loved it.

      When James threatened to tickle her back, her face became very serious, and she held up her index finger threateningly. “ No, no, that’s not how we solve problems in this household, mummy doesn’t get tickled, you - ” but her words were fruitless, resulting in the attack anyway, and she yelped in surprise despite knowing that it was going to happen anyway. Lily tried to be stern through their tantalizing but could hardly get a word out through her strained hysterics, nearly falling over at every moment.

      “ You - two - are so - grounded ! ” she cried, her threat losing any sense of reality as it was interrupted with breathless laughter.

⎯   ✴︎ There was something perfect about moments like these. They weren’t exactly rare, but they felt pure when they were happening. They felt exceptionally good. It was all because it could be ended in a moments notice and they were once more without the perfect moment. But at the moment, they were all laughing, they were all getting to be the family that wasn’t being chased by war. They had happiness and joy and excitement not fear.

         James laughed when Lily threatened grounding, but eased up nonetheless and sat back as he let Harry have a few moments more. He shook his head before he scooped him up and wasn’t surprised by the resulting “aw.” He moved him around so he was sitting on his shoulders and he was sitting up. “I know it’s fun getting back at mummy, but she did make you pancakes  so I think she’s been tickled enough,” he said, casting a wink at Lily.

         With one hand on one of Harry’s legs for balance, he reached forward and picked up a plate before he handed it up to him. He felt the plate be placed on his head before he reached over and grabbed his own. “No crumbs in my hair.” He laughed jokingly, doing his best not to move his head too much.

▵ — Lily loved him. She loved the way he smiled, and the fact that he didn’t laugh when she first confessed that she wanted to live in a chocolate house. She loved that she could swear she saw the cogs of his mind painting an image of the two of them living in one together. She loved that something so stupid seemed to make him love her even more. “ That was the moment you knew you’d marry me? I thought you always knew you’d marry me. I knew I was going to marry you the minute I finally said yes, ” she confessed, daring to laugh in the midst of the silence around them. She squeezed his hand. “ Who knows. Maybe by this time next year we will be living in a chocolate house. With a dragon or two. ”

      Lily had gotten into the habit of trying to convince herself that she accepted the way that she and James now had to live. She’d gotten into the habit of trying to convince herself that things were probably always this quiet, and that she just never noticed. She was terrible at it. Every time she walked down these streets she remembered all the wonderful things - the loud things, the happy things, the fun things, and even some of the angry or sad things. Now it just felt like it had been touched by terror. “ Sometimes I’m afraid that he’ll never be able to know it like we did, ” she whispered, almost inaudibly.

⎯   ✴︎ James laughed before he shook his head. “No, I always knew I’d date you. I was seventeen and marriage was to abstract like I didn’t think about that until I realized there was the possibility of marrying you and having a chocolate house.” Yeah, there’s been a part of him that speculated, but at that point he was just riding on the fact he was excited she’d even said yes to a date and that he’d be lucky if he didn’t screw that up. It wasn’t until that first date that he really thought about the future. Now he did all the time. “Emme will say it’s impractical, I’m sure. But she’ll- wait. Did you say dragons?”

            He glanced over at Harry when Lily whispered. He’d heard enough of what she said to fill in what he didn’t. It was something James worried about too and it was only emphasized more by how dead it was around the alley. Well not dead, but shiver inducing. And not because it was cold out. He let out a sigh through his nose. He really hated to think about it nonetheless. That this is how life would always be. Being on the run, having to hide how they looked in plain sight, watch their words, hope Harry would make it out of this okay. He’d taken to not thinking about it like that. He knew they’d win eventually. There was no reason to think otherwise.

             “He’ll know it like we did. Except with maybe a new broom model or two in the store windows.”
