On Lilac's Gender (Ender Magnolia)

Lilac from Ender Magnolia is an interesting character for a variety of reasons. Their exact origins are never really hard-confirmed, but there's enough in the game for players to piece together one or two possibilities. This is all quite interesting in-and-of-itself, but ever since Ender Magnolia came out, I've seen some debate as to what Lilac's gender is actually supposed to be.

Right from the get-go, this character design is EXTREMELY androgynous. I remember as far back as the very first reveal trailer of the game that I was a little confused as whether Lilac was supposed to be a guy, girl, or neither.

Now, it should be addressed that the wiki refers to Lilac as female, and uses she/her pronouns for the character. This does make a degree of sense, as Lilac is, functionally, a White Priestess, and there's nothing necessarily contradicting that.

However, it should be noted that the game itself seemingly goes out of its way to avoid using ANY gendered pronouns for Lilac at any point. Other characters only ever refer to Lilac as "Attuner," "Child," or by name. Even Lilac's own character bio ONLY ever refers to them by name, not using "he," "she" or even "they."

There have, allegedly, been interviews with developers that refer to Lilac as female, but I've also seen a fair bit of debate about the legitimacy of these interviews and whether or not they were translated accurately. Admittedly, I don't speak Japanese myself, so I can't really say anything on that front, nor could I do any sort of comparison to the in-game Japanese text. I can only base my thoughts on what is presented to be in the English version of the game.

Ultimately, Lilac's gender is left kind of ambiguous, and until or unless we get any sort of direct confirmation from the devs of Binary Haze themselves, I don't think there's any way to conclusively say one way or the other if the character is meant to be nonbinary/agender.

Even so, I will continue to interpret them as such until further evidence is provided, though I won't necessarily fault anyone for using she/her pronouns either. At the end of the day, it's not really that significant to the game itself, but still a point I think is worth discussing due to the vague language used in the text.

Have you considered drawing Dante's different emotions/expressions using their flames like a facial expression? You had a lovely drawing where Dante getting surprised made the fire all spiky and protruding in shock. So may I please request other emotions be expressed through the fire too?

thank you for the interesting ask! the top ones i'd use more frequently. second image i improvised with what i can morph their flames into, then it was just assigning them all vibes.

i really like dante emoting through their flames! i should put more effort into drawing them out more. i do like the vagueness of dante's nonexistent facial expressions but, listen, if project moon gives them any new talking sprite that isn't their clock arrow moving a bit or them putting their second hand into their pocket my life will be theirs

Project Moon seems to actively avoid saying anything at all about gender (which in itself does say something- they seem to write their characters blind of what gender they're going to be and maybe even flip a coin to decide, in the end saying "we're all people and anyone can be in this social position and have these personality traits", but that's not the point here) but it was still awesome of them to make one of the six female characters in the main cast a mother figure anyway- which sounds sarcastic but I promise it isn't, because that character happens to be the violent chainsmoker who speaks in esoteric acronyms and refuses to explain them and only enjoys herself when she gets to engage in her favorite form of art (murdering people). that's the mom. and they practically tell us “she loves her child like a defensive spider mother who will hunt for food for her babies and devour anyone who tries to squash her kids” through giving her some form of Spider Bud EGO three times.

the reason this is better than no mothers at all is because instead of having to explain why [x] character (Rodya mostly) is not at all a mother figure and having to elaborate on Project Moon’s ideals and the way they write their characters you can go “actually you’re wrong the only milf on the bus is Ryōshū” and also because it subverts expectations so much more than if there just wasn’t any moms. with a complete absence you could still have the “ideal” mother in your head imagining that she could exist in the cast, but instead we have this
