Day 31- Ru Versus Madhouse
Tumblr media
Year: 1974
Director: Jim Clark
Writer: Angus Hall and Ken Levison
Starring: Vincent Price, Peter Cushing and Robert Quarry
Madhouse, made in 1974 is about a horror movie star coming back from retirement after a traumatizing event to reprise one of his famous roles. However, on arrival there is a string of murders happening that mimic kills from his previous films. Now he is suspected to being the murderer due to his unstable past.
I’m going to start by saying that I LOVE Vincent Price, he is one of my favorite actors of all time, but that won’t make me biased to my review. I will admit the special effects in this film are a bit cheesy, but I do get a kick when films have some pretty bad effects, mainly because I feel like they aren’t taking themselves seriously.
Another thing I wasn’t fond of was just the amount of characters that are thrown at us. I know this tactic was to detour us from who the killer was, but I think they needed to scale it down. I was able to keep track of which characters was who, but I felt like a few of them were unneeded and just a waste of space.
Madhouse is a very amusing film, mainly because I film like it’s a homage to Vincent Price’s work as an actor. I wouldn’t say it was the best Vincent Price film I’ve seen, but it was certainly amusing. I give Madhouse 3 stars out of 5.
Thank you again for reading guys. It’s been a fun and crazy month and I appreciate everyone who helped me every step of the way!

Day 30- Ru Versus Book of Blood
Tumblr media
Year: 2009
Director: John Harrison
Writer: John Harrison, Darin Silverman and Clive Barker
Starring: Jonas Armstrong, Sophie Ward and Clive Russell
Book of Blood made in 2009, is about a paranormal investigator and a medium investigating a haunted house. What they don’t know that this isn’t a normal haunted house but a meeting point for the dead, and they’ve entered dangerous territory.
Like always I don’t do very much homework on my films until after I’ve seen them. Well, I knew Clive Barker was attached to this film, so I assumed he wrote and directed this one. I was very wrong, this is only a snippet of one of his short stories. The entire film I was so confused because this wasn’t his kind of style of filming. It wasn’t magical, it was a simple haunted house story. After watching the film and seeing the credits I finally figured out that this wasn’t a true Clive Barker film.
The special effects and makeup in this film was pretty well done, not on the level I was expecting, but nonetheless it was still good. There really wasn’t much on the makeup side, just a cut here and there, most of it was digital, and if you’ve been reading my blog you know my thoughts on CGI in horror films. Like I said earlier I was expecting this to be a Clive Barker film so I was expecting great special effects makeup and just over all creepy effects, but I wasn’t too disappointed in what I saw.
Book of Blood was a great story, but I felt like it should have been kept as a short story and perhaps a short film. The movie was dragged on longer than it needed to be. The acting sometimes seemed a little off but every movie has that flaw from time to time. If you are looking for a new haunted house film to watch and are willing to deal with the slow paced story, then Book of Blood is a film for you. I give Book of Blood 2.5 stars out of 5.
Thanks again for reading guys. Tell me what you thought about the movie!

Day 29- Ru Versus The Baby
Tumblr media
Year: 1973
Director: Ted Post
Writer: Abe Polsky
Starring: Anjanette Comer, Ruth Roman and Marianna Hill
The Baby, made in 1973, is about a social worker who is trying to recover emotionally from an accident that has happened to her husband. In her line of work she has to check up on the Wadsworth family, who have a son who looks like a grown adult but has the personality of a baby. As the social worker visits the family more she realizes they are not as nice as they seem.
I have to say this movie is a strange one. Most of the time I was baffled, not by the plot or anything, but by the concept in general. I think the writer and director wanted the film to be disturbing and make the audience go “what the fuck!?” and they did an amazing job. The actors added to this effect too, especially the actor who played Baby. It takes some talent for a grown man to act like a newborn without laughing or feeling somewhat mortified.
The Baby is not a masterpiece but certainly a film I would love to share with friends, simply to see their reactions to it. The story was alright and certainly messed up, and that’s what got me through most of the film was just how crazy everyone was. I give The Baby 2.5 stars out of 5.
Thanks again guys for reading, tell me your thoughts on the movie.

Day 28- Ru Versus The Devil’s Backbone
Tumblr media
Year: 2001
Director: Guillermo del Toro
Writer: Guillermo del Toro and Antonio Trashorras
Starring: Marisa Paredes, Fernando Tielve and Frederico Luppi
The Devil’s Backbone, made in 2001, is about a boy named Carlos (Fernando Tielve) whose father has passed away during the Spanish Civil War. Due to his lose he is now orphaned and sent to an orphanage with other boys who have been affected by the war. Soon Carlos finds out the orphanage is haunted and starts to uncover its unsettling past.
This review will be quick since most things I have to say are basically a repeat of my review of Cronos. Both Cronos and The Devil’s Backbone are directed and written by Guillermo del Toro and have similar filming styles to them. However, I will say I enjoyed The Devil’s Backbone more than Cronos, mainly because I do enjoy a great ghost story versus any other kind of horror sub-genre. The story was great, the characters were likable and once again Del Toro manages to bring his amazing story telling skills to the table. I give The Devil’s Backbone 4 stars out of 5.
Thanks again for reading guys. Tell me what’s your favorite Guillermo del Toro film.

Day 27- Ru Versus The Initiation
Tumblr media
Year: 1982
Director: Larry Stewart
Writer: Charles Pratt Jr.
Starring: Vera Miles and Daphne Zuniga
The Initiation made in 1982, is about a young girl name Kelly (Daphne Zuniga) joining a sorority. Kelly is your normal girl, but she is troubled with the same nightmare over and over again. She never knew what her nightmares were trying to tell her until the night of her initiation, and a secret about her past is revealed.
I really enjoyed this film, despite its very predictable plot twist. It is your typical slasher film, but it had something different to it. This film gave you time to let the characters sink in, figure out what they are about, not just the main girl, but a few characters around her too. It gave you a chance to want some of the other characters to fight on and survive too.
One thing that really disappointed me in this film was the amount of plot holes there were. It was almost like the film had maybe ten or twenty minutes of the story cut out of it. It was like the writer had a great idea, but didn’t have an explanation for those ideas. I did enjoy the story but it would have been better if the plot holes were filled, which could have taken maybe a scene of explanation.
The Initiation is actually a decent slasher film and despite its plot holes and somewhat predictable story, it was enjoyable. No matter how predictable I find a film, if it was enjoyable to watch then that trumps other aspects of the film that might not be that great. I wouldn’t put this film in the top slasher list, but if you have nothing else to watch, I would say The Initiation is a good film to put on and enjoy. I give The Initiation 2.5 stars out of 5.
Thanks again for reading guys. Tell me your thoughts!

Day 26- Ru Versus Inferno
Tumblr media
Year: 1980
Director: Dario Argento
Writer: Dario Argento
Starring: Leigh McCloskey and Irene Miracle
Inferno made in 1980 is about a girl finding a book called “The Three Mothers” in an antique bookshop. Soon she starts to believe that the contents of the book are real and writes her brother a letter. The concerned brother then travels to meet his sister but soon finds out that she has gone missing.
Inferno was a very confusing story for me at first. I really don’t know why but I wasn’t able to keep the female characters straight. I think that’s what made it hard for me to grasp the story at first. I was too busy trying to figure out who was who. Once I figured out which female character was who, I caught on to the story after that.
This film also really makes me want to watch Suspiria again, since this film has the same writer and director and are considered “connected.” I haven’t seen Suspiria in years but Inferno does have the same feel and atmosphere to it which I liked. I just wished I did my homework and re-watched Suspiria before watching Inferno. I think by watching Suspiria again I would have made it easier for me to understand the film, and I think I would have enjoyed it more.
Even though it may sound like I didn’t enjoy Inferno, I really did. It had the atmosphere and mystery that Suspiria had, but like I said I just wished I watched the films back to back first to get a better feel of this story. I wouldn’t recommend this film to watch on its own, but if you’ve seen Suspiria and remember most of it, I think you can dive right into this film. I give Inferno 3 stars out of 5.
Thanks again for reading. Tell me what you thought about the film.

Day- 25 Ru Versus Cronos
Tumblr media
Year: 1993
Director: Guillermo del Toro
Writer: Guillermo del Toro
Starring: Federico Luppi and Ron Perlman
Cronos made in 1993, is about an antique shop owner who happens to stumble upon an ancient device. What he doesn’t know is that by being stabbed by the device it gives him everlasting life. Soon he will learn that dangerous people want was he has and will stop at nothing to get it.
When I noticed Guillermo del Toro wrote and directed this film I knew I was going to be watching a good movie, but at the same time, slightly disappointed because I’ve seen a good amount of his films and they all seem to have a pattern. Cronos wasn’t the case though, it had a similar pattern but something different and fresh for me. Del Toro has a way to tell a story that I love, he likes to bring the world of fantasy and horror together, similar to Clive Barker, just less gory.
I also loved the effects in this film, there wasn’t very much, but the special effects makeup that was used always popped. I also loved the fabrication of the device, it’s something that I would love a replica of, just to own. That’s another thing I have to give Del Toro credit for, he knows how to make the effects and props in his film pop and mesh well with their surroundings.
Cronos was a great film with an amazing story. I recommend this movie, but one thing that did get on my nerves was the language going back and forth from Spanish to English. I understand why it was done, but it was a little frustrating. Besides the whole language situation Cronos is awesome, and not to mention it has Ron Perlman, so enough said there. I give Cronos 4 stars out of 5.
Thanks again guys for reading. What’s your favorite Guillermo del Toro film?

Day 24- Ru Versus Alice, Sweet Alice.
Tumblr media
Year: 1976
Director: Alfred Sole
Writer: Rosemary Ritvo and Alfred Sole
Starring: Linda Miller and Paula E. Sheppard
Alice, Sweet Alice made in 1976 is about a normal family trying to get by. One of the daughters is found brutally murder in her church on the day of her communion. All fingers point to Alice (Paula E. Sheppard), the girl’s older sister. Did Alice really commit these crimes, or was she at the wrong place at the wrong time?
I really don’t have much to say about Alice, Sweet Alice. It was a pretty great film. There were a few moments when I became a little lost, but I found my way back pretty quick. Besides that the story was great, and the girl they found to play Alice was amazing, she had a great level of creepy to her. One thing I really did love was how this film caught me off guard. I thought I knew what was happening and then BAM! they pull out a twist I wasn’t expecting. This is a rarity for me, and I like when that happens. Sorry for the review being so short, but like I said, I really don’t have much to say about this film besides that it is a pretty good film. I give Alice, Sweet Alice 3.5 stars out of 5.

Day 23- Ru Versus New Years Evil
Tumblr media
Year: 1980
Director: Emmett Alston
Writer: Leonard Neubauer and Emmett Alston
Starring: Roz Kelly and Kip Niven
New Years Evil, made in 1980, is about a punk rock celebrity known as Blaze (Roz Kelly), throwing a televised New Years Eve party. At the start of the party Blaze gets a phone call from a mysterious caller saying that they will kill someone close to her when it hits midnight in a different time zone in America. Is this just some bizarre New Years prank, or does Blaze really has something to worry about?
New Year Evil was not as bad as I was expecting it to be. Many holiday films tend to be very cheesy. This film wasn’t the greatest but it held my attention. I’m also basing this film off of other holiday horror movies I’ve seen like Thankskilling, Christmas Cadavers and Silent Night, Deadly Night. All of those films had a so bad its good flair to it, where New Years Evil wasn’t bad but just simply alright.
One thing I wished this film could have done was kept more of a mystery of who the killer was. Their real identity was hidden up until the last twenty minutes of the film, but we saw their face the entire time. I would have liked it if we didn’t see their face, it build suspense and I feel like this film needed more suspense.
I didn’t hate New Years Evil, but I did find it just alright. One thing that really killed me about this film was how predictable the plot and the plot twists were. Like I said before I just wished there was more mystery surrounding the film and the killer. However, I will give the writers credit for basing the film around New Years,  mainly because it gives a different feel to the movie, which I feel like a lot of horror films set around a holiday have. I give New Years Evil 2.5 stars out of 5.
Thanks again for reading guys. Tell me what you thought about New Years Evil.

Day 22- Ru Versus The Innocents
Tumblr media
Year: 1961
Director: Jack Clayton
Writer:  Henry James and John Mortimer
Starring: Deborah Keer, Peter Wyngarde and Megs Jekins
The Innocents made in 1961, is about a governess taking care of two children who live in a derelict mansion in the country. The governess becomes convinced that the house is haunted and worries for the children’s safety. Is she crazy or is there really ghosts residing in the mansion?
I’ll admit The Innocents is a fairly slow movie, but it does make up for that with the children being creepy. Just the way these two acted made the movie, for the most part they seemed like playful adults. Also besides knowing that they were orphaned much about their past is a mystery. You don’t know anything about their parents, just that they aren’t around and the uncle doesn’t care about them. The fact that these details are left blank makes them even creepier.
Another thing I loved about this film was the house that the film was based in. It was just so beautiful and perfect for a ghost story. Mansions are usually a big part of ghost stories, but most of the time they are abandoned or it’s about homeowners fixing the old house. But in The Innocents there is an elegance to the house that I like, and almost makes it more eerie.
If you like more of a fast paced story then The Innocents is really not a film for you. I did enjoy the creepy atmosphere set by the house and the children in this film. I wish the film could have been paced a little bit faster, but besides that it was pretty good film. I give The Innocents 3 stars out of 5.
Thanks again for reading. Tell me your thoughts about the film!

Day 21- Ru Versus Pumpkinhead
Tumblr media
Year: 1988
Director: Stan Winston
Writer: Ed Justin and Mark Patrick Carducci
Starring: Lance Henriksen
Pumpkinhead made in 1988 is about a single father living in the country happily with his son. One day a group of kids from the city come into town and accidently kill the son in a motorcycle accident. In a state of mourning the father goes to a witch who helps him call upon a demon known as “Pumpkinhead” to take revenge on the people who killed his son.
I’ll be honest, I was expecting Pumpkinhead to be a train wreck of a film. I was expecting a film that was bad but also funny and I was wrong. This isn’t a bad thing, I was just surprised about how good the film actually was. I think the reason why I thought this film was going to be so bad it was good, was because of the many sequels it has after it, plus the name is pretty great.
One thing I really enjoyed about the film were the special effects, mainly the build of Pumpkinhead in general. I did think he looked very similar to the Xenomorph’s in Alien, but it was mainly in the structure of the body. I thought he was very menacing and detailed for his time. Most films usually don’t show the monster a lot, mainly because of budget reasons or they don’t want to reveal them until the very last scene. But in Pumpkinhead they went all out, they showed him any chance they could.
Although Pumpkinhead wasn’t the hilariously bad film I was hoping for, I stilled enjoyed it. It was decently made, the story was interesting and even though I didn’t care for the group of city kids, I did care for the father. After seeing Pumpkinhead I can now advance to its many sequels, and most likely see how bad the series ends up. I Give Pumpkinhead 3 stars out of 5.
Thanks again for reading. Tell me how you felt about Pumpkinhead.

Day 20- Ru Versus The Devil within Her
Tumblr media
Year: 1975
Director: Peter Sasdy
Writer: Stanley Price and Nato De Angeles
Starring: Joan Collins, Eileen Atikins and Ralph Bates
The Devil within Her, made in 1975, is about a woman named Lucy (Joan Collins), who has just giving birth to a baby boy. However, strange things are happening and it appears that the baby is not only stronger than the average child, but also violent. Lucy begins to think her child is possessed by the devil, and it’s caused by something from her past.
There are so many names for this film I honestly can’t keep them straight. The names are The Devil within her, I don’t want to be born, and the strangest one cause it makes no sense Sharon’s Baby. The last one makes no sense because there is not a single character in this film named Sharon. I just think it’s strange for a film to have so many names, and it’s not a regional thing. At first I thought maybe it was a marketing ploy to get itself ahead of the game against films like The Omen and Rosemary’s Baby, but this film actually came about before those two, so I’m still pretty stumped.
One thing I felt that hurt this film was the music. It was all the wrong kinds of music for this film. The music was what you’d expect from a film made in the 70s, but it was more porno music then horror. I think if the music felt more suspenseful it would have given the film the boost it needed. Music helps set a tone for a film, when it’s so out of place it really kills the mood. I’m not the biggest stickler on a films soundtrack, but in this case it really annoyed me.
I think The Devil within Her is an okay film. If I wanted to watch a crazy baby film though I think my first choice would be Rosemary’s Baby. This film had far too many plot holes and needed to be fleshed out more. I honestly would have liked this film more if it was a short or some part of an anthology film, but as a full length feature I think it doesn’t translate as well. I give The Devil within Her 1.5 stars out of 5.
Like always thanks again for reading. Tell me your thoughts on The Devil within Her.

Day 19- Ru Versus The Entity
Tumblr media
Year: 1982
Director: Sidney J. Furie
Writer: Frank De Felitta
Starring: Barbara Hershey
The Entity, made in 1982, is about a normal single mother, Carla Moran (Barbara Hershey), trying to get by. Carla soon becomes tormented by an entity that shakes her to her core. Is the stress of being a single mother getting to her, or has she become the target of something from the other side?
I wish I watched this film years ago. The Entity is a classic and I can see how it inspired the many horror films we see today. Especially films like Paranormal Activity and Insidious. All I kept thinking of was “this is the original Paranormal Activity.” I know Poltergeist came out the same year as The Entity, and although they are both classic ghost stories, I feel like The Entity was more of an inspiration to the ghost films we have been seeing lately in theaters.
I do have a big pet peeve on most horror related things, and that is when they slap on “based on a true story.” I’ve noticed that this really only happens with American releases. An American Haunting had that, and that was nowhere near true, and same with Paranormal Activity. I think that Americans viewers won’t feel connected or interested in a film unless it’s remotely based on “truth”. I’ll admit, I haven’t done my research on this film, there might be a chance that this is just snippets from someone’s true story. But I just hate when I see that line in horror movies, or even the few video games I know have it, because you can’t really PROVE the truth in that. I feel like saying “based on a true story” is just a ploy to get more people to watch, and sadly it works too damn well.
The Entity is by far my favorite film this month. It was at a constant state of being intense. There was never a dull moment, the characters were likeable, and the story actually had some meat to it. This film grabbed my attention, because even though I knew something was going to happen, I just didn’t know when exactly or how. I give The Entity 4.5 stars out of 5.
Thanks again for reading guys. If you’ve seen The Entity did you like it as much as I did?

Day 18- Ru Versus The Evil Twin
Tumblr media
Year: 2008
Director: Kim Ji-Hwan
Writer: Kim Ji-Hwan and An Min-Jeong
Starring:  Shin-Hye Park
The Evil Twin, made in 2008, is about a girl who has awoken from a ten year coma. She learns that she and her sister were in a terrible accident and her sister did not survive. Soon a strange series of murders happen in the village she lives in. Is there a coincidence with the girls awakening and these murders?
Like many Korean horror films, The Evil Twin was very artsy and filled with symbolism. Also, like many Korean horror films, they tend to be long and extremely dramatic. I like symbolism in films, but for me there was a certain one that was a little heavy handed, and that was the color red. I know it was meant to be artistic, but coming from a film graduate’s point of view, when you dull down colors to the point where everyone notices it just so you can make one color pop, you are going a bit overboard.
One thing I did enjoy about The Evil Twin is the costuming. I’m no historian but I felt like for the time this film was supposed to be set in the costumes really worked. They did make me feel like we were in a different time period. Again, I’m no historian so I could be completely wrong and this could be incorrect, but even if it wasn’t for the time period the film was trying to convey, they at least did a great job keeping up with consistencies of the costumes.
I’m still on the fence about The Evil Twin, I want to like it, but there are too many factors weighing in that just make me feel “meh” about it. Maybe it’s because I’ve seen my share of films but I found this film too predictable and trying a bit too hard to be artistic. I love a good ghost story, and honestly even though the plot twist was a little bit predictable, it’s the one thing I did enjoy about this film. I give The Evil Twin 2.5 stars out of 5.
Thanks again for reading guys. Like always tell me your thoughts on this film.

Day 17- Ru Versus Let’s Scare Jessica to Death
Tumblr media
Year: 1971
Director: John D. Hancock
Writer: John D. Hancock
Starring: Zohra Lampert
Let’s Scare Jessica to Death, made in 1971, is about a woman named Jessica (Zohra Lampert) who has recently been institutionalized. She and her husband move to a rural town where she can have the peace she needs. However, on arrival there is a mysterious woman living in their new home. Out of kindness the couple let her stay. Soon, Jessica begins to see and hear things, is it all in her head or is there truly terrifying things happening around her?
I wanted to enjoy this film, but there was one big detail that was annoyingly screaming in my face. That detail was the actress who played Jessica. Zohra Lampert was just terrible, I haven’t seen her in any other films but in this one she was pretty bad. I felt like Jessica was more mentally challenged then mentally disturbed, and that was all on the actress and the director telling her what to do. I could not feel anything for her, and frankly felt annoyed when she was on screen.
It could have been the bad acting, but I also felt that this film was incredibly slow. The only time this film peaked my interest was for the last ten minutes. I thought the story line was great, but too slow and executed poorly. Like I’ve said before this could have been because of poor acting, I just couldn’t immerse myself in the story.
I feel like in a different time, with different actors I would of enjoyed Let’s Scare Jessica to Death. Even though I enjoyed the overall story, I couldn’t get passed the poor acting and slow pacing. This film is certainly a film to watch to broaden your variety of horror films, but to me I think this is a one watch film. I am glad I watched this film, but I really wished it could have been better. This is the rare occasion where I would be excited for a remake. I give Let’s Scare Jessica to Death 2.5 stars out of 5.

Day 16- Ru Versus Ghoulies.
Tumblr media
Year: 1985
Director: Luca Bercovici
Writer: Luca Bercovici and Jefery Levy
Starring: Lisa Pelikan and Peter Liapis
Ghoulies, made in 1985, is about a young man and his girlfriend who have recently inherited a mansion. Soon after moving in, the young man becomes obsessed with the occult and begins to dabble in it.  The young man begins to conjure demons and can control them to do his bidding.
Ghoulies was the film I’ve been looking for so far this month. Well, one kind of film. It was a perfect amount of cheese and horror. I’ll admit I found the demons so damn adorable, which is why I think this film has it “cheese” factor. Although the puppets were decently made, I just found them too cute instead of scary. They were like the Gremlins, but smaller. The actual special effects makeup was great, but other effects did come off as bad to me, and sometimes those adorable puppets looked a bit off. But overall the effects and puppets were alright, especially for the 80’s
Sadly, even though the effects were fine, the acting is pretty terrible. It’s the kind of acting I would expect from an 80’s horror flick. However, the acting didn’t really hurt the film but just added to its flair. All of the acting was defiantly over the top and there was never really a dull moment because of that.
Ghoulies was a great film from the 80’s. I feel like it’s a film that didn’t take itself seriously and had fun with it. Although I love my serious horror films, I do love films like these that lighten up the genre. I loved the monsters and the effects, and even though the acting was bad it just added to the film. Ghoulies is one of those films I wish I was alive to see when it originally came out. I give Ghoulies 3.5 stars out of 5.
Thanks again for reading guys. Tell me what you thought of the film.

Day 15- Ru Versus Lord Of Illusions
Tumblr media
Year: 1995
Director: Clive Barker
Writer: Clive Barker
Starring: Scott Bakula, Kevin J. O’Conner and Famke Janssen
Lord of Illusions made in 1995 is about a private detective Harry D’Amour (Scott Bakula) who is investigating a man for fraud. Harry finds himself caught between a cult and a man claiming to be an illusionist. Before long he is on the threshold between a battle of good and evil.
Clive Barker always finds a way to portray a story in the most creative way. He manages to take his views into other worlds that are not just horror but fantasy as well. It’s almost like Wonderland meets Freddy Krugers hell. That’s what I love about Barkers film, not only is it an even amount of horror but fantasy as well, and never in a cheesy way.
Like always Clive Barker manages to use amazing effects along with its story. He manages to make you cringe but not go over the top. Also not to mention for a film being made in 1995 the effects and what little CGI he had are top notch. I was watching Lord of Illusions with 2 other people and they both asked me what year this film was made in because they were shocked how well the special effects were for its time.
Lord of Illusions was a great film, story wise and visually, but I felt like even though the story was good it had too many plot holes. I haven’t read the story that the movie was based on, but I feel like perhaps there was a few things lost in translation from paper to film. This doesn’t destroy the film, but it does make it slightly confusing. Besides the plot holes Lord of Illusions is a decent film, I give it 3.5 stars out of 5.
Thanks again for reading. Tell me how you felt about Lord of Illusions. If you didn’t see the film, what is your favorite Clive Barker Film?
