RvB15 Eps 1-6 Critical Review

(I’m just trying to figure out what makes this season feel so different to me)

Never in its 13 seasons had the show gone more than an episode without a single Red or Blue (miniseries notwithstanding). In contrast, season 15 begins with four – count’m, four! – episodes without more than three words from any main Red or Blue.

While I appreciate the risk-taking involved in the decision to hold off on seeing our boys for so long, the fact of the matter is that these new characters were just not enough to hold this season afloat on their own. Dylan is your typical over-dedicated reporter and Jax is the standard over-eager film student. I didn’t come here for knock-off Kimball and Palomo, I came here for my Reds and Blues.

Much of this I believe could have been fixed by throwing in just a single familiar face and making their duo a trio. Have Doc, or Sister, or Doc, or hell – even one of the lieutenants! – join them on their journey. A third party member might have shaken things up and allowed for more natural humorous character dynamics, so that poor one-note Jax isn’t burdened with the entirety of the comedy for these first four episodes. Actually they could’ve just left Jax back on Chorus -- I don’t think anyone would have cared. But then who would make all those film references the season tries to pretend are comedy?

But enough about what-ifs -- Do you know the one episode that actually did have me laughing? Surprise, surprise, it’s the episode where we finally see our beloved Reds and Blues again. It’s a great showing of rapid-fire comedy and characters just being themselves in different situations: What if Carolina got Grif to teach her to be lazy? What if they started a band? What if dinosaurs? 

Then comes episode 6, and with it a switch in focus to character interactions rather than comedy. Wash and Tucker have an adorable talk, Grif finally tells everyone to go fuck themselves -- good times. No but really, I loved all the interactions and character growth set-ups here. Episodes 5 and 6 bring us back to the Red vs. Blue we know and love.

But moving on, after the great episode 5 gave us the humor, and episode 6 gave us nice character interactions with Tucker, Wash, and Carolina, and what appears to be the start of a long-awaited Grif and Simmons character arc (albeit with a strange, out of nowhere meta reference to tumblr?? Why???) I was actually quite hopeful that this season had finally gotten on course. But then…

“Im doing this for me”

I do feel like its really important to me that Locus left and he wasn’t doing it for any other reason. hat he reclaimed an agency he’s been trying to give away. To Felix, to his orders, to Control, to WASH, and really dont tell me he wasnt looking at the Meta as another way to do it. Locus didn’t want his agency, but now he has accepted it. That he just realized that he was not able to heal or grow as a person until he left. “Im doing this for me”. That phrase most of all is SO important.

Felix is a really emotionally abusive person. I mean REALLY abusive. Probably the point that stuck with me most was after they both went through the True Warrior’s trial and Felix was making light of Locus’ distress. Taking his own fear out on him basically. Or maybe its all the repetition and constantly putting him down. The shifting of blame after his monologue prevents them from killing everyone in s12e12 is textbook narcissism and I could go on- There’s lots of things that stuck with me as familiar to my own experiences. That’s part of what made Felix such a great villain to me. How manipulative he was.

But Locus’ actions are still his own. Hes been trying to dump his agency out the window and hell- Felix wanted that too! He tried to reinforce that and that’s what Santa means when he said Felix didn’t want him to heal from how he broke in the war (PTSD etc). Locus being  dependent on Felix is so much more useful to him. And Miles did say “Felix’s best friend is whoever he needs it to be”. Hhaving his greatest fear following him around and helping him just makes Felix feel stronger then him. And if he’s stronger than his greatest fear well…anyhow.

It takes a lot of strength to move away from an emotionally abusive relationship. To acknowledge that it was a reason but not an excuse for killing so many people. And Locus doing that, and acknowledging his greatest fear and defeating it? Moving past and growing up? That is why hes a true warrior now. I think Santa was encouraging it for that reason. 

And when it comes down to it, if you have to leave a bad relationship thats exactly what you need to say to yourself: “Im doing this for me. I deserve better.” Even if it means you need to take responsibility for your own actions. However horrible they may be while you were influenced by it.

In all honesty I kind of wish this episode had come out a year ago. I think that it would’ve helped me because that was when I left, and maybe it still kind of has. I mean, I think that moment was really important, and to me personally if it had come out at a different time it would’ve been as influential as “The past is just a starting point for who you’re going to be” and “it doesnt matter why you’re here- what matters is that you’re here” have been on my life, haha. But most importantly I think putting it out there for others to see will help them. Even if they dont always realize right away.

I hope this makes sense.

… You know what I just realized? The animation was so smooth, I didn’t notice it was fucking animation. As in I didn’t feel the difference between animation and machinima anymore. As in it just felt real. It didn’t feel like someone playing a game, or taking models and making them move. I was just caught in the episode and didn’t think ‘oh nice switch from machinima to animation’. These guys have reached a point where it just feels entirely natural.

What we all expected tbh
