For those who don’t live in the US, at around 2:18 pm today, the US Government sent out a Test Emergency Alert to all our phones. People were getting scared because we thought it would also go off on our other devices like iPads and TVs but it didn’t, it was literally similar to an amber alert that was easy to turn off. Yeah, don’t always listen to TikTok when it comes to upcoming events, because over exaggerating and stuff.
i'm so sorry but i just rewatched the whole gotg trilogy and after seeing rocket's backstory there's so many things that hit different in the first two.
SPECIFICALLY that moment in gotg2 when quill is fighting his dad and everyone thinks he's gonna die, rocket shoots gamora down and says "i can only afford to lose one friend today" (woof) and then drax is just screaming "rocket where's quill" on repeat, i SOBBED because u just know that little trash panda is being retraumatized straight to hell. just the WAY drax was screaming felt like a copy/paste of "rocket teefs floor go now" 😭😭😭😭😭
Somewhere out there in the multiverse, there's a version of Rocket who wasn't abducted by the HE as a kit and is just chilling by a riverbed on earth lookin like this
Something I've seen discussed is whether or not the metal "ribs" on Rocket's chest were removed by him after escaping or if his fur grew over them.
I think he definitely removed them!
First off, when he's shot by Adam Warlock in the beginning, he's bleeding from the area, and when the wound is cauterized, the fur is burnt off and you can't really see anything besides the metal pieces on his collarbone.
Also, due to how matted down his fur is in this scene, you can clearly see the outline of his rib-cage in the below photo, note not just the ribs, but how it kinda curves in towards his tummy and you can see where his lower ribs meet his sternum (seriously Rocket when was the last time you've had a decent meal? ☹️ )
Given that, you'd expect to see at least an outline of the metal being there, extending over to the outer bounds of his chest and ribs, but it doesn't look like it is.
Another angle:
I doubt that flat piece of metal would curve out and then down again with his chest.
So that brings us to a horrifying thought. HE DEFINITELY DID DO SURGERY ON HIMSELF!
Cold and alone on his spaceship, biting down on a rag as he, with whatever tools he could scrounge up, PAINFULLY removes this metal shit that has been hurting him as he grew. Damn that sucks to think about. Poor guy 😞
The music that binds the Guardians together came from Peter Quill, but Rocket is the first one to understand its full importance. Right from the beginning of Vol. 2, he's setting up the boom box "so we can listen to tunes while we work," when even Quill says it's not a priority. Later, he requests a soundtrack for his and Yondu's epic takedown of the Ravagers. It's not just fun, it's strategy: music distracts the enemy and helps the team vibe together.
When Rocket's listening to the Zune in the Vol. 3 opening, the first part of "Creep" is for Rocket's ears alone, but then he sets it to play through Knowhere's speakers so everyone can hear the song. He does the same thing at the end to kick off the dance party. To him it's not Peter's music, or Mom's, or Yondu's. It's everyone's music.
Peter was always willing to tell everyone he ever met that music and dancing were the greatest things in the universe, but until the very end, he saw them as his personal connections to the past and to his late loved ones. His real growth came when he realized that he had already given the Guardians a meaningful legacy, and that his best friend was ready to take over. He's right that Rocket will be a better leader than he ever was, but Rocket wouldn't have gotten there without Peter and his Walkman.
Y’know something? I find it really sweet that you can really see Rocket's character growth between the first and last movie. Like he goes from being the last to stand up to work on a team, and when he does, he does it with a sarcastic quip to being the one insisting the new guardians face a threat together. He's grown so much and it makes me really happy!
I love how throughout all the other movies he shows up in, Rocket wears these tight, form-fitting suits covered in multiple straps, but in Vol 3 he's just like:
Lylla dying in front of Rocket like how Groot dusted in front of him. Floor and Teefs died when Rocket wasn't looking like how Peter, Drax, Mantis, and Gamora died/dusted when Rocket wasn't there with them.
After watching GOTG vol 3 for a second time, I wanna take a minute to talk about Rocket and Lylla’s relationship. I believe Lylla is Rocket’s mother figure. Hear me out, because I know a lot of you will disagree, especially since their relationship was romantic in the comics.
But as with the rest of mcu, there can be big changes from the source material and Lylla going from a love interest to a mother figure can totally be one of them. Hell, it actually wouldn’t be the first time either considering Alexi was Natasha’s husband in the comics and now father in the mcu.
Back to Lylla and Rocket though, I really think they made this change intentionally and wanted the audience to see her in that motherly light. Her dialogue, her tone, all of her mannerisms actually are incredibly nurturing. I mean, just their first interaction itself sets up this mother figure idea. Lylla is introduced to a frightened, literal baby and immediately starts to soothe him, almost cooing, in a way that a mom would for a crying baby. Lylla then essentially licks his wounds and cleans Rocket up.
Of course Teefs and Floor were also welcoming and sweet but not in the same way as Lylla; they were excited for a new friend and were ready to accept him as their own (they also had more childlike personalities themselves), but Lylla was more calm and tried to help Rocket adjust to the situation emotionally. From there on, she literally raises Rocket. As Lylla said herself, there are hands that guide you, and for all of Rocket’s time growing up, she was the one guiding him. She was his biggest comfort and source of love, and she was his biggest supporter too.
She taught him, not in the ways the High Evolutionary did, but rather socially and emotionally. Lylla is the one who lifted him up, encouraged him, and was beyond proud of him. The scene where they hug right after Rocket breaks them out, reminds me of a mother who is so proud of what her baby grew up to accomplish. Even in the after life scene, Lylla’s physical affection was platonic and once again, her showing she’s proud of him. Even the words, “my beloved raccoon” sounded like a mother’s love and admiration for her child.
And to me, once you realize what Lylla really was to Rocket, her murder is infinitely worse. Because not only she die right before his eyes, but he spent the rest of his life blaming himself for his mother’s death.
