Jean-Paul Laurens - Pope Formosus and Stephen VII (1870)
The Cadaver Synod (also called the Cadaver Trial; Latin: Synodus Horrenda) is the name commonly given to the posthumous ecclesiastical trial of Pope Formosus, held in the Basilica of St. John Lateran in Rome during January of 897. The trial was conducted by the successor, Pope Stephen (VI) VII, to Formosus’ successor, Pope Boniface VI. Stephen accused Formosus of perjury and of having acceded to the papacy illegally. At the end of the trial, Formosus was pronounced guilty and his papacy retroactively declared null. The Cadaver Synod is remembered as one of the most bizarre episodes in the history of the medieval papacy.
Probably around January 897, Stephen (VI) VII ordered that the corpse of his predecessor Formosus be removed from its tomb and brought to the papal court for judgement. With the corpse propped up on a throne, a deacon was appointed to answer for the deceased pontiff.
Formosus was accused of transmigrating sees in violation of canon law, of perjury, and of serving as a bishop while actually a layman. Eventually, the corpse was found guilty. Liutprand and other sources say that, after having the corpse stripped of its papal vestments, Stephen then cut off the three fingers of the right hand that it had used in life for blessings, next formally invalidating all of Formosus’ acts and ordinations (including, ironically, his ordination of Stephen [VI] VII as bishop of Anagni). The body was finally interred in a graveyard for foreigners, only to be dug up once again, tied to weights, and cast into the Tiber River. (+more)

Do you have any tips for mold on bones? They're a few years old, originally buried to clean and dug up. They ended up in a moldy box, and after using hydrogen peroxide, it looks like the mold wasn't killed or just came back again. Or are they basically no good? Thanks!
they may not have properly dried or were in a place with high moisture… ive had that happen a few times but only when they have been kept in a damp space or put in a sealed container before fully drying out. When i find mold i usually just scrub off what i can with some alcohol and sponge, air dry and then give another soak in peroxide. From there lay out  towel and allow them to air dry for a few days ( best to rotate them to make sure moisture doesn’t get trapped between the bone and the towel) If they are larger bones especially make sure to rotate. They should be fine to go once they are dried through and through. Another method for killing off mold is vinegar….. i cant do the smell of vinegar too much but i have used it to kill of mold  in garages and bathrooms before, along with an after spray of peroxide. : ) Other bone folks, feel free to chime in and leave comments of your methods for mold destruction and conquer! I just use the peroxide, and alcohol but im sure there are other ways too <3

An 1865 book set out to disprove ghosts by demonstrating “spectropia,” or the optical illusion created by staring at an image of an apparition, and then looking at a blank wall or ceiling to see the specter appear before your eyes.
