🎗Sewol Ferry Disaster(세월호 참사)🎗

“We can’t go back to the times before the Sewol Ferry disaster.”

April 16, 2020 marks the sixth anniversary of 세월호 참사(the Sewol Ferry disaster). The Sewol Ferry disaster was on the April 16, 2014. A Incheon Port(인천항)-Jeju Port(제주항) regular passenger ship named 세월호(Sewolho, Sewol Ferry)  overturned and sank in the waters near  관매도(Gwanmae Island),  전라남도(South Jeolla Province). On the ship were high school students and teachers on a school trip. Of the 476 passengers, 304 were killed or missing.

Today’s post will be the story of 세월호 참사(the Sewol Ferry disaster).

The day, April 16, 2014 

- 08:52 a.m.

A 단원고(Danwon High School) student who was on the 세월호(sewolho) that had left Incheon port the previous day for Jeju Island called 119(Korean 911) to ask for help.

- 9:00 to around 9:30 a.m.

The ship beginning to sink, the passengers waited for rescue on board, but there was an announcement telling them to stay still.

- Around 9:30 a.m.

Coast Guard helicopters appeared in the area of the accident. Nearby fishermen had launched a rescue. Five minutes later, a coast guard patrol boat arrived.

- Around 09:35 a.m.

The Sewol Ferry was leaning more than 45 degrees to the left, but rooms from the third floor were not yet submerged.

- 09:38 a.m.

There were seven in-flight standby broadcasts. Some passengers were aware of the Coast Guard’s arrival, but they remained inside the ship because they believed in the announcement to wait on board.

- 09:46 a.m.

The captain and 15 crew members who escaped, leaving the passengers behind, were rescued by the Coast Guard. Until this time, many passengers were still remaining in their rooms following the announcement that had told them to stay inside.

- 10:17 a.m.

The Sewol Ferry tilted more than 90 degrees. Only the passengers who had chosen to climb to the deck and waited for rescue were rescued.

- 11:09 a.m.

The 경기(Gyeonggi) Provincial Office of Education, which oversees 단원고(Danwon High School), sent a text message to reporters that all students aboard Sewol Ferry were rescued. But it was wrong information. The media carried the article out to the public without any confirmation process.

- 11:18 a.m.

145 meters long and 22 meters wide, the nation’s largest passenger ship, sank with only about 30 meters left on its boat’s head.

At around 11:50 a.m. on April 18, Sewol Ferry completely disappeared from the view as even its bow was submerged. Controversy and suspicion over ship operation and crew, accident process and rescue, recovery process, misinformation and subsequent correction continue even in 2020.

Declaration of Human Rights to Dignity and Safety:

No one will be able to survive. The sinking of the Sewol ferry on April 16, 2014, was not only an incident symbolically demonstrating that the South Korean society itself had already begun to sink but also a disaster that followed numerous other similar ones. Despite the calamity that horrendously revealed contradictions and absurdities of this society, the South Korean government is trampling on the justice, and South Korean presses and media are distorting the truth. Spitting on human dignity and covering up the truth, they say: “Do nothing and stay where you are!” But if we do nothing and stay where we are, eventually no one on this land will be left alive. 

We could not stop resisting in solidarity just to live again as human beings. Standing at the Paengmok Port, in Ansan City, at Gwanghwamun Square, and on all the other streets covered with sadness, we were anxious and agonizing. We shedded tears, talked with one another, came out to squares and marched together. While faltering under persecutions, we nevertheless have been struggling together and recovering our dignity. Darkness can never overcome the light, and insult can never drive dignity away. 

All human beings are free and equal in themselves. Everyone has the right to safe life. Safety is not to be secured through controls and repressions. Nor is it to be bought with money. Human dignity realized in liberty, equality and solidarity is the cornerstone of safety. We will fight against any unjust force that threatens our rights and safety by trying to reduce our beings to a mere means to earn profits and maintain privileges. 

Rights never come to us by themselves. They can only be conquered and preserved through our organized struggles. Such practices for rights are the very way to democracy and the only way that we, the people, can affirm that we are the democratic sovereign. We will wear the yellow ribbon and raise candles against the forces menacing us and depriving us of our dignity and safety. This struggle that already began in the pain over the Sewol ferry tragedy will overcome any obstacles to protecting the dignity of each and every one so as to continue to march to our new world of solidarity. 

With feelings of loss and sadness, and with seething indignation, we hereby declare human rights to dignity and safety. We promise that we will remember the Sewol ferry disaster, uncover its truth and set the justice right through our unrelenting practices. We swear as well that we will pay attention to all disasters, calamities and miseries in the world and provide our support to them with solidarity. We will not hesitate to reveal what has been concealed and to speak out against the structure of power that encroach dignity and safety. This declaration is not to be completed in the text but in the process in which numberless others like us speak, shout and take actions again and again. Let us hold hands together. Let us act together.
