The Inside Look of Cheerleading
Sunday September 3, 2023
Sideline cheer is the most basic kind of cheer. It is the kind of cheerleading everyone thinks of when you mention the sport. High schools and colleges cheer for both basketball and football, and depending on the school sometimes volleyball and other sports. Sideline is difficult because there are several cheers and dances you have to have memorized. You also have to be super loud and energetic to try to get the crowd involved. We sometimes use megaphones to be louder. Your motions have to be sharp and precise, and make sure your on time with everyone else. Football games can be long nights, so it takes a lot of endurance. Most cheerleaders stunt and tumble on the sidelines as well. Cheerleading is a sport that not many people know about, however there are a lot of aspects that go into it. I hope this blog helped you learn a little bit more about cheerleading!

Pyramid is a part where everyone on the team is involved. It is a bunch of stunt groups that connect to form one big stunt. The flyers will do all sorts of tricks and flips, and do a lot of body positions. Pyramids can be very dangerous if people aren’t paying attention or not putting in their best effort. There are a lot of transitions and movement. The movement makes it look more complex, and really makes the judges want to watch. Technique is important because if someone isn’t paying attention, one group falling can drag the rest of the pyramid down.

Jumps is a section of the routine that every team does. There are three different types of jumps you can do. Pike, hurdler, and a toe touch. A toe touch is what most people refer to as a straddle jump. it’s when your legs are out to the side. The pike is when your legs are straight and together straight in front of you. The hurdler is when one of your legs is bent behind you and your other leg is straight in front of you. There is tons of technique that goes into jumps. Pointed toes, legs straight, you need good height, and a bunch of other things. Jumps may seem like something that would be thought of last, however it is one of the most important sections in the routine.

Stunting is another huge part of a routine. Stunting involves 4 positions. Main base, side base, backspot, and a flyer. The flyer is the one in the air, who does all the motions and body positions. Being a flyer means you have to be very flexible. The backspot is in the back of the stunt, and makes sure it stays controlled. They help take some of the weight off the bases by pulling up in the ankles. The bases work together to hold the foot flat and still, so the flyer can feel comfortable in the air. There are many different tricks you can do in a stunt, and they all involve different grips. This takes a lot of practice, and a lot of muscle.

Welcome back! Today we are going to dive a little deeper into the parts of cheer. Today we are going to start with tumbling. Tumbling requires a lot of muscle in lots of different places. You need a very strong core, strong thighs and calf’s, strong arms, etc. All of these are extremely important when doing new skills. There are 6 different levels of tumbling. Level 1 being the beginner skills you learn, and level 6 being the highest. Technique is one of the most important things when tumbling. Without technique you are at a huge risk for injury. Tumbling takes lots and lots of practice, but everyone has the ability to do it!

The Inside Look of Cheerleading
Monday August 28, 2023
Hey! This is the start to my new blog! I am going to be blogging about my passion for cheerleading. Cheerleading has been a part of my life for 13 years now, and I have loved every second of it. There are many different aspects of cheer, including stunts, tumbling, sideline, baskets, pyramid, dance, jumps, etc. Each section is very important in order to create a perfect routine. There have been many tv series to bring appreciation to the hard work cheerleaders put in. There are 3 different types of cheer. High school, All star, and college cheer. Each perform on different levels depending on the skill level.
