idk what compelled me to get on tumblr, but i just scrolled down and saw a one piece gif and decided it's time for a classic tumblr user ryuko rant. there will be spoilers for all one piece arcs (wano, egghead, etc.) below!
just to vet myself, i am (or was) as big of a one piece fan as you'll ever meet. i have (had?) been reading one piece weekly up to date since 2005 without missing a single week, but i recently decided to stop. and what's crazy is, after being a fan for two full decades, i don't miss it at all. i will probably go back and read once it's truly in its climax, but i genuinely don't think one piece is good anymore. after stepping away from it for an extended period (i think i'm about 25 chapters behind now, so roughly 6-9 months without reading), it has become extremely evident how lost the series has gotten along the way.
not to sound like a boomer who only cares about pre-ts arcs, but the most recent arcs are just so jank. i saw op fans unironically flexing that the wano arc lasted almost as long as jujustu kaisen's ENTIRE manga publication. how could anyone possibly think that's a flex?? oh on the note of dragged out storytelling, vegapunk's speech during egghead lasted over 6 months. like....... these are examples of objectively bad storytelling. it also truly baffles me how bloated each new arc is with pointless characters who do absolutely nothing noteworthy or impactful for the arc. wano was such a joke of an arc with the multiple character death fake-outs, yamato screaming about joining the crew for like 50+ chapters and having a full backstory connection to ace only to say teehee oopsie nvm at the last second, carrot being part of the crew for nearly 7 (SEVEN!!!!!!) full years but not even getting an on-screen goodbye with the crew at the end of the arc... i could go on forever but this rant would be longer than it needs to be (as if it isn't already). idk if it's the editors' fault or oda's fault or maybe a combined effort, but oda can't handle the grand-scale casts anymore.
the bigger issue isn't the fact that each new arc seems to have 50+ characters with paper-thin development involved, it's the fact that the main crew suffers (and has suffered) so heavily for it. if you look up the word flanderization, you'll find a picture of the strawhat crew. do you remember when zoro was an actual character with motivation and the only one who would regularly check luffy's silliness? like when usopp left the crew and everyone wanted to let him back in but zoro and zoro alone said no? or when luffy got in a fist fight with vivi to get her to speak up and face the horrific reality of the situation in alabasta and just how much help she would need to save it? or when robin had to overcome immense trauma and two full arcs of development just to admit to herself that she wanted to live despite every person and event pushing her to die? now, zoro is just hurdur lost man says cool one-liner and slashes big. robin is just sexy lady who likes cute things and says one morbid joke per arc. don't even get me started on chopper.... that thing is not even recognizable (and i don't just mean design-wise) to who he was when we first met him. and sitting at the top of mount flanderization is luffy. he used to be a silly, carefree dude who would crank the seriousness to the max when it mattered most. a classic shounen protagonist, but a lovable one. but now? bro was literally SHISHISHI laughing crying emoji-ing while fighting in gear 5 as vegapunk got MURDERED!!! this dude is an actual sociopath!!!
speaking of gear 5, what a stupid power. i'm not even going to speak on the whole "destined for greatness" trope debacle bc i frankly don't care. protagonists are almost always the chosen ones in their respective stories, and that's not unique to animanga. love it or hate it, if you enjoy fiction, it just is what it is. what i WILL critique about gear 5 though is how LAZY it is. his power is literally to just...... do whatever he wants?? might as well have just called his fruit deus ex machina no mi. every time luffy gets hurt now, you're just like uhhhhh did he actually get hurt...? no his eyes went ooga booga so he must be okay! oh he punched a hole in the enemy...? oh nvm the enemy went dingy spingy he is just mildly injured! we are near the climax of this entire series yet somehow all the stakes from each big fight are gutted by the mere existence of gear 5. bring me back to when crocodile impaled luffy on his hook or when lucci rokuogan'd luffy and my cheeks were clenched to the max.
idk. i'm just tired of one piece. and i'm not ashamed to admit that the absurd surge in mainstream popularity has played a tangible role in accelerating this sentiment. any time someone tells me one piece is peak, it sounds no different from when dudes used to tell me avengers endgame is the greatest achievement in cinema history. like i'm happy you're having a good time, but let's be serious for a minute lol
#idk#i'm tired of the bad storytelling#also tired of the sheer obsession with gaudy sakuga#just tired of maximalism in modern anime in general#i'm a boomer but idc i'm right
