"The Imperial family symbolized the splendor and power of Russia. In our room there was a photograph of the Tsar, Tsarina, their four daughters and the little Tsarevich, a boy who suffered from haemophilia.
It was said that these four graceful princesses were exceptionally modest. They were a little older than us, and each of us had her own favorite. My cousin Alice liked Olga, the eldest; dreamy, with outstanding talents, she wrote poetry and played the piano well. Tatiana, like me, was the second daughter, so I felt more affection for her. She was said to be more practical, more polite and sensible than her elder sister. Sometimes I looked at her face and thought that her relatives were lucky to live with her. Xenia's favorite was Maria, the most cheerful of the four sisters; she was simple in her manners, loved songs and catchphrases. As for Natasha, she preferred Anastasia, the younger, impulsive, mischievous.
The Grand Duchess Tatiana was my ideal. She possessed all the qualities that I lacked and that I so wanted to have. She was beautiful, calm, self-confident. I often sought and could not find the right form of behavior, but Tatiana was natural and perfect".
