had to get this out because bellamy is one of my faves. hey how are you doing. i am so ready for this post to get no traction bc nobody and i mean NOBODY is insane abt bellamy in the same way i am. Quick Bellamy + Doflamingo thought dump

Alright, so. I'm doing a way longer, more refined analysis of the Donquixote family. Currently, it's still in the drafting stages, as I have a lot to say, and haven't had the most time to work on it (Not to mention, motivation comes and goes). The entire essay is an analysis of the ways grooming and exploitation of the young and vulnerable is a key aspect of the Donquixote family - How the family is not founded on compassion or love, but your use and your loyalty. In the essay, I plan to cover quite a few characters (Including Doflamingo himself and his blood family, the four executives, as well as characters like Monet, Dellinger, Baby 5, Bellamy, Viola, and Law).

However, I have a lot to say about Bellamy in particular that I simply can't in good conscious jam into my essay on the family (While I focus on individual characters, the essay is about the family as a whole). I also, similarly, have many feelings on Baby 5 that I wish to talk about - But for now, I focus on Bellamy, and how I believe the fandom gets his and Doflamingo's relationship... Ssssoooo wrong. So, here's a sloppy thought dump of my thoughts on it!

It probably goes without saying, but!!!!! DRESSROSA SPOILERS BELOW THE CUT!!! And be warned, I talk about grooming, manipulation, and classism throughout this!

Let's start with one common belief present in the fandom, that I wholeheartedly despise and disagree with - That Bellamy grew up wealthy, discarded his wealthy upbringing, and that's why Doflamingo hates him. I don't believe this is true. And I will continue to believe it as not being true no matter what. And you may cry out, why, why do you believe it not to be true !? Trebol said that Notice was an affluent town! He said it was wealthy! And yes, he did say that. But, it was never actually stated that Bellamy was ever rich, nor that Doflamingo hated him because he had a wealthy life and abandoned it. And Trebol's statement about Notice, in my mind, affirms my personal belief about Bellamy: That Bellamy (And by extension, Sarquiss) grew up impoverished in Notice. If you know anything about wealthy communities, you know they will often try to hide their "undesirables" from public eye - They want the world to think they're picturesque, free from those nasty beggars, that everyone lives happy in our community, and oh please, don't look too close at the rotten spots of our perfect little apple. Bellamy was one of those rotten spots - And he would have never amounted to anything more, not in that town. Bellamy wanting to join the Donquixote family, that was exhibit A of Bellamy's internalized classism, instilled in him as it is instilled in all of us, which then turned external. He wanted to escape the hand he'd been dealt, and Doflamingo could do that! By sailing under Doflamingo's jolly roger, he could be more, he could be so much more than that, his family was the pride of the North Blue afterall. He'd prove that town wrong. He hated that town. He hated that boring little town.

And you may question next - Well, that doesn't explain why Doflamingo hates Bellamy so much! And why would he have rejected Bellamy the way he did if it wasn't personal? And the answer to that question is.... Well. Easy. A lot of the fandom approaches Doflamingo from the lens of him being a victim, rather than him being an abuser (People will Hate Me for saying that but its true - Many people focus more on his "victimhood" than him being an abusive scumbag). And not only is he an abuser - But, he is also classist, ableist, misogynistic, racist, basically every kinda -ism you can think of, quite frankly. And I'm saying: he "hates" Bellamy both for being low class and for being so fixated on him while being low class, because how dare a low class, aimless, twobit street rat like this brat think he and I are so alike? But oh well. If he wants to be a tool so badly, then I'll use him like one. That's the kinda thought process Doflamingo has. But I also dare to say, Doflamingo doesn't neccesarily "hate" Bellamy the way people tend to percieve hate. He hates Bellamy the way a person would hate a spider making a home in theirs - With disgust that the spider had the audacity to try and live in their vicinity, and with all the fleeting care put into stomping that spider. Bellamy wasn't worth his time, but Bellamy wasn't worth his "hate" either, only his passing discontent.

Now, again I'm focusing on Bellamy+Doflamingo in this, but I have to bring in other characters to put my next point into perspective, about why Doflamingo rejected him. Compare how Bellamy approached Doflamingo to any other member of the family - Each and every one of them were either picked up by him when they had no one else (Or with only a sibling, as is with Monet and Sugar), or they approached him all by their lonesome (Law). In each and every one of the younger members of the family, they all had nobody and nothing, and that - That? That made them the perfect choice of victim for Doflamingo. That is how abusers commonly function. They pick the loneliest, the "weakest" people, and they sink their claws in - And if they aren't already alone, then they'll isolate them. Bellamy, in contrast, approached with a crew already behind him. He was surely vulnerable, he was looking at Doflamingo with rose-tinted glasses, and what better choice of victim than one that already thinks the best of you? But he wasn't alone. He wasn't worth Doflamingo's time or effort in the first place, but especially not if he wasn't an easy target. That alone sets him apart from Doflamingo's other victims - But what else?

I bring up Law again, solely because - He was another of Doflamingo's victims who willfully approached him, and asked to join. Aside from the fact Law approached alone, while Bellamy didn't, Law also approached with a distinct goal in mind - To destroy as much as possible. Something Doflamingo viewed as he and Law having in common. But more importantly, he viewed Law as being moldable. Law had a goal. He had anger. He saw this hurt little kid, and thought he was just like him, and he could foster in him the same hate Doflamingo has (The hate that's based in classism, compared to Law's hate, which is based in resentment of the government and ruling class that took everything from him). Comparing that to Bellamy -Doflamingo viewed Bellamy as having nothing in common with him. Bellamy had no goal, he had no will, not in Doflamingo's eyes. Again, Doflamingo saw Bellamy as low class, not the same as him, just a little admirer who had no aim in life but to get close to him, and he sneered at that. You see this reflected in all the ways he talks about Bellamy - He says you and I were always different, Doflamingo says to Bellamy that he will always be nothing more than a "delinquent", that lowlifes like Bellamy and his crew have no place in his family. (Notice the way Doflamingo was not only degrading Bellamy, but his entire crew as well!)

Yet - When Bellamy returns from the sky islands, and begs Doflamingo for forgiveness, Doflamingo obliges. Doflamingo even lets Bellamy be part of the family, he tells Bellamy that if he proves himself, he could get an executive position. Why would he do this, if he said people like Bellamy had no place in his family? Easy answer! Bellamy, now, had no one else. Bellamy wasn't alone when he first approached, and now he was. That made him an easier target now, a target Doflamingo didn't have to put much effort into, especially if the brat would come crawling back even when he kicked him like a lost puppy. Not only that, but like I mentioned - The family is based on exploitation and use. If he could still wring a little use out of you, if you still hold unyielding loyalty to him, then maybe you still have reason to exist in front of him, no matter how flithy your blood is. No matter how aimless or trite your goals are. Isn't that so kind of him? You should be grateful for that kindness, it's more than you deserve. Bellamy proved not only that he could still have some use, but that, again, he would come running back, too - No matter what Doflamingo did. Bellamy would come running back like a dog. Even after Doflamingo tried to end his life, after Doflamingo proclaimed the unbridgeable gap between them, Bellamy would still come back, he would still fight for Doflamingo. Like a wounded dog, he'd limp back to the hand that beat him. And if Bellamy could be nothing in life, then maybe he could be something in death, and maybe Doflamingo would like him better that way.

And I call back to Law again for a comparison - Doflamingo was fixated on Law in his youth, he believed Law was so similar to him, he believed he could have molded Law to be his third Corazon - and when he learns Law had escaped, after having eaten the Ope Ope fruit no less, he is angered, but then decides that oh well. A little education, and Law would give up his life to grant Doflamingo immortality. A perfect example of how, if you will be a traitorous rat, then you should at least be useful before you die for such insolence. And we see this again in Dressrosa, where he offers Law a "wish" in exchange for giving Doflamingo immortality. Law still had use. But Law refused. So, Law was better off dead. Bellamy had no use, really, though he still had loyalty. So, he too was better off dead, once Doflamingo was done taking all he could. When you're apart of the family, you should be ready to die for Doflamingo, to prove you were worth the time he wasted on you, whenever he deems it so. And when he says jump, you say how high.

this is a really messy ramble, so sorry if some parts of this don't make sense, if I don't elaborate, or if I misremembered some things (I'm going off my relatively fresh memory of the Dressrosa arc and Jaya arc!) but i just wanted to get my thoughts out, instead of spending weeks writing a whole essay about it (Since I'm already doing that for my Donquixote family analysis), so. here. take it. take it take it take it take it !
