life is shorter than the way concerts feel
or at least the concerts where someone else is gripping you by the hand and never letting go
(in which michael makes a grave mistake but finds his way in the end)
He can guarantee that he’s never felt this way before. On top of the world, some may say, but the feeling he has circulating around his body can only be described as enough for him to wildly scream and chant along with everyone else in the crowd.
He is blissfully unaware as to losing you an hour ago, as the alcohol mixed with the buzz of the crowd and the adrenaline that pumped through his veins caused him to forget any reason for being other than to be right there in the moment, focusing on the beat of the drums and the depth of the bass and the passion and the sweat and the tears that the lead singer was currently screaming out from the top of their lungs and the bottom of their heart as the hundreds of others who faced the 4 piece band, followed their own pathway from this very night, daring to never look back in the past and finding a way to keep fighting their demons through this very moment.
This night was the start of new beginnings.
But for you and Michael it was the beginning of the end.

the first kiss - c.h.
hi all!! this is the fifth installment of my ‘firsts’ series with Calum. there will be more blurbs to come, such as first time spending the night, first fight, first child and more. please be patient with me as I write these blurbs, and I hope you enjoy!! :-) follow the tag anarchyaustralia firsts if you want to be notified when a new blurb is posted!! (see all other ‘first’ blurbs here)
It had been about a week since your second date with Calum and you had yet to see him again. Granted, you two were texting every day, but you couldn’t help but be jealous of his fraternity and soccer team who got to see him all the time during the past week. It was a Friday night, though, and Calum had promised to see you no matter what. You knew he had soccer practice until late, so for now you just sat watching a movie, checking your phone way too often in the hopes that Calum would text you of his whereabouts.
You were practically falling asleep on the couch when your phone began to ring, your heart beating rapidly as you fumbled to answer the call, just barely registering that it was Calum who was calling.

Friends? Part 7 (C.H)
A/N - sorry it took so long to get this part started! i wanted to shake things up a bit and not have the guy save the day so... look forward to that. also this one will be a bit short due to me not having a lot of time to write. (still not my gif)
[Part 1] [Part 6]
Calum stood from the couch but Andrew’s stare never left him. Ashton, Amelia, and Maya also placed their eyes on Calum, unsure of what he was going to do. Frankly, Calum was unsure of what he was going to do as well. As he took a step toward Andrew, he noticed, for the first time, how short Andrew appeared to be. Maybe it was because his body had drained of all his confidence or he was just short, either way, Calum stood a head taller than him.
“Andrew,” you said, glancing between him and Cal, “I think–”
“Is he the reason?” Andrew’s voice was rather quiet but not quiet enough for only you to hear. You slowly shook your head at him, putting your hand on his arm for reassurance. Calum’s mouth fell open at your actions and he once again felt the strain on his heart. You had to be lying in his mind but you were so convincing, for Andrew’s sake, that Cal was questioning your feelings towards him. “Don’t lie to me!” Andrew snatched his arm away from you, making you jump at his sudden motion.
Calum stepped towards him, “Andrew, calm down, it’s–”
“No! You think I don’t know?! I’ve been calling myself crazy for even thinking that she would go behind my back but my doubts were right! And of course it was with you!” He jabbed a finger into Calum’s chest. Cal didn’t take this lightly. What’s that supposed to mean? He thought. He pushed Andrew’s finger away from him with such force, Andrew stumbled backwards a step or two.
Ashton leaned over and whispered something into Amelia’s ear. Amelia stood and grabbed Maya’s arm, removing both of them from the room.
“Listen,” Calum started. You knew this wouldn’t end well and tried to step in. Ashton stood but didn’t move from his place, anticipating a fight.
“Cal,” you warned, but he ignored you.
“You don’t deserve Y/N and the fact that you thought you could have married her makes me laugh.”
“No, I don’t deserve Y/N. I don’t deserve this shitty result of me loving her. I deserve someone better. I should have know this bitch was bad news.” Andrew spat back. Calum’s hands curled into fists and his brow furrowed. Before Cal could take up any action, you spoke up.
“Andrew,” you pulled at his shoulder harshly to make him face you, “I agree you don’t deserve me but if you want to find anyone half as good as I am, you better pull your head out of your ass.” Andrew’s face grew red as he shoved the velvet box into his pocket and stormed out of the room, making sure to knock over a lamp and slam your door on his way out.

getting tattoos with calum would probably be the most spontaneous decision in the world where one of you would suggest it and next thing you knew you were at the tattoo parlor picking out designs and like i bet calum would let you choose what he was getting and sometimes you’d let him choose yours as well and then you’d adoringly watch as the other got inked and calum would probably chuckle at you whenever you winced from the pain and when it was his turn to go under the needle he’d be the type of guy who’d barely show any signs of discomfort but when he did you couldn’t help but giggle and tease him about it just so he’d go all cute and pouty and mutter “you’re awful, laughing at my misery like that” but then afterwards he’d probably still swoop you up in his arms and kiss your cheek with a smile and whisper “you’re awful but i love you” and he’d just be the cutest

Never Be Alone.
Requested: by a fab Anon. ❤
Request: Never Be Alone (Shawn Mendes).
I promise that one day I’ll be around I’ll keep you safe I’ll keep you sound Right now it’s pretty crazy And I don’t know how to stop or slow it down
“Calum!”
“Over here!”
“Smile-“
“Are you leaving the-“
“When is you next album-“
He dodged the multiple flashes, shielding himself from the questions and the stupid questions.
“Hey!”
“Over here! Smile for us-“
“Did you breakup with –“
His shoulders tensed, head snapping to the person that asked the question. He received a smug smile from the magazine paparazzi as he got pictures of Calum that looked like pure fear. Calum quickly raised his hands, the middle fingers were prominent and the majority of the flashes stopped. They couldn’t use pictures that were ‘indecent’.
He was quickly shuffled in the studio after that, managers already yelling at him but he couldn’t hear them over the sound of his heart beating out of his chest. He reached for his phone before realizing it would be no use. You wouldn’t answer, not after what he’d said.
And he knew you were not angry, if anything you were understanding and maybe that’s what hurt. You were so kind, understanding that as of right now his life was insane and he couldn’t be the boyfriend you deserved when he was in a different continent.
“I promise, if you wait for me, that one day I’ll be around. I’ll keep you safe, I’ll keep you sound. It’s just my life’s crazy and I don’t know how to stop or slow it down.” He had apologized, tears in his eyes as he tried so hard not to let them fall. Maybe it was his pride but he couldn’t let you see him cry.
“Calum, your writing with Michael in the first room.” He nodded, absentmindedly walking down the corridor. In his trance he did not see the person in time, slamming his shoulder against theirs.
“I’m so sorry.” He apologized as he helped the person up, startling as he saw you. “Y/N?”
“I’m sorry, who?” He blinked, the face changing from the one he let go to an intern with the label. He let go of them like they had burnt him, hand going to rub at his face.
“Sorry. Have a nice day.” He muttered, ignoring the worried glance they gave him as he slumped into the room where Michael sat. He tapped out of whatever he had been doing on his phone, looking up at Calum with a smile but he froze, smile dropping immediately as he got a good look at his friend for the first time in a week.
“Hey man, what happened?” Calum had tried. He really did but tears were already making their way down his cheeks before he could even process it.
“Cal.” Michael whispered, wrapping arms around the an as he broke down.
“I had to end it. It wasn’t fair to her.” He sobbed and what was he supposed to do to make this better?
“And this is fair to you?”
Hey I know there are some things we need to talk about
He had been on stage when he got the call. His phone buzzing loudly, one of his favourite pictures of you popping up. You were on his back, playfully biting his cheek and he was smiling like he had the world in his hands.
“Hey Calum. It’s me. I don’t really know why I called right now, I don’t know if you want to talk to me but I just. I saw a picture of you, you look like you have not been eating well. Not that it’s any of my business. This is a wreck, an absolute horrible message. Look, I know there are some things we need to talk about so if you could call me back? I lov- Sorry, oh my gosh. I’m so sorry.”
The message ended abruptly and his heart felt like it was going to beat out of his chest. He leaned against the table, his knees were too weak to hold him up right now as the boys filtered in the room.
“Cal?” Luke questioned, startled when the man in question seemed to get a burst of anger. His phone went flying, smacking the wall with a resounding crack as he dropped to his knees. You sounded so broken, so very hurt. You had almost said that you loved him, still. What had he done?
“Go.” He heard from behind him and he whirled around to see Ashton standing inches from him.
“What?”
“Don’t be an idiot. Go get the love of your life back Calum.” He instructed. Maybe it was the way the boys nodded their encouragement or the echo of your unspoken words running through his head, the memory of you saying them without care keeping him awake at night that had him running out the door. He didn’t stop to get his luggage, or a new phone. He had his credit card and he had to get to you so that feeling, that longing and empty feeling would go away.
And I can’t stay Just let me hold you for a little longer now
“Calum? What are you-,” You didn’t get to finish your sentence. The man drenched in rain like some kind of badly written romance movie had already wrapped you in a hug, molding every piece of him to you and you stopped questioning it as you tightened your arms around him. You breathed in his scent, the rain water doing little to mask the cologne you bought him and his natural smell of love and home.
“I can’t stay.” He whispered as you laid in bed, clothes changed but not stripped. There were boundaries that you were not willing to step over right now and you didn’t need to have sex with him to feel close right now. This was enough. You nodded, figuring he meant this moment as you started to shift. You knew he had to go to the next arena soon or his label would be displeased to say the least.
“Wait, just let me hold you for a little longer now. Please.” And you weren’t complaining, resting in his arms as you both fell into a gentle and restful sleep that you hadn’t had in a long time.
Take a piece of my heart And make it all your own So when we are apart You’ll never be alone
Friends. That’s what he left as and he would take it. He couldn’t just not talk to you and the gentle kiss he pressed to your forehead before he went through airport security promised more, eventually.
The boys could see it, the difference it made because as management chewed him out for taking off like that, he just sat there with a smile on his lips.
“How’d it go?” Michael questioned, his arm going over the boys shoulders as he dropped onto the couch beside him backstage. Calum held his (new) phone so that his friend could see, a ghost of a smile still on his lips.
Take a piece of my heart. You had sent, a picture of the necklace he had bought you not long ago hanging around your neck. He had bought it for you after you had sent him, jokingly of course, buy me something pretty. It made him leaving just a bit easier if you joked about it.
“That’s great. You two really are something. It will be alright.” And as Calum quickly snapped a picture of his wrist, the bracelet smooth if a little worn with the message, and make it all your own he actually believed it.
You had gotten him that the day after he gave you the necklace, smiling as you said “So when we are apart, you’ll never be alone.”
You’ll never be alone When you miss me close your eyes I may be far but never gone When you fall asleep tonight just remember that we lay under the same stars
“I miss you.”
“Then close your eyes.”
“What?” It had been months since he showed up on your doorstep and while nothing was official, you both knew that when he had shown up, it meant that one day it would be again. You didn’t mind waiting if he was your prize.
“Close your eyes.” He repeated and you felt like an idiot but no one was here so you listened. Fluttering them shut as you rested in the cushions. When he spoke again, soft but audible whispers, it felt like he was next to you.
“I may be far but never gone.” He promised that night, both of you getting ready to end the call because you needed rest and he had minutes before he had to be on stage. When you opened your eyes, it was dark outside but you had the phantom feel of Calum sitting beside you and as incredibly lonely as it was, you knew it meant that he would be back soon.
“When you fall asleep tonight, just remember that we lay under the same stars.” You spoke, gently reminding him that you loved him without free falling over the unspoken boundaries you two had set.
“Sleep well my love.”
You’ll never be alone
“Calum! Over here.” This time he didn’t have to fear the pictures being taken of him, faking smiles and acting like he was alright with you not by his side. It was you this time, the voice calling for him as he grabbed his bags from whatever that spinny thing is called. With how much time that he spent in airports, you’d think he would know.
“Baby.” He whispered it like a prayer, dropping the very bags he had just picked up so he could catch you. He hadn’t expected you to meet him at the airport but as he cradled you in his arms, your soft curves and how you were gripping onto him like a like a lifeline, he was so glad you had come. The rest of the boys had went to their homes while he had come to his.
“I didn’t expect you.” Setting you gently on the ground, you smiled up at him with the biggest heart eyes that were almost as big as his.
“I did not expect you.” You had expected him to go with the boys, see his family and relax.
“I told you that you would never be alone. Not if I can help it, beautiful.” He cradled your face, inhibitions were thrown out of the window as he leaned down, lips an inch from yours as you were speaking.
“I was never mad.”
“I know.”
“I love you.” He paused, his lips still an inch from yours as he took in a sharp breath. His hands trembled where they were resting on your face as he shut his eyes. Closing the gap, you melted into him as he held you to him with a vicelike grip.
“I love you.” He said a few moments after you pulled away to catch your breath.
“I love you more.” You had teased but as his eyes met yours, leveling you with a gaze so intense, so filled with everything that he had never said, you were frozen in him.
“Impossible.”

For Writers with Page Fright
(I haven’t stopped laughing self-indulgently since I thought of the term page fright)
You know the feel, when you’ve got your idea and got your cast, maybe even worked out an outline, and you pull up the document and spend a good 20 minutes picking out a nice font and formatting everything just to your liking, you type out Chapter One or maybe even a snappy little chapter title and then you look at the empty page and you think ha ha. what.
Maybe you’re scared you’ll fuck up that first line, and after that it’s all down hill. Maybe you’re overwhelmed by the fact that you can literally choose any words now so how can you possibly know which ones are the best ones? Maybe you don’t know your beginning. The pressure is too much. It’s not really interesting anymore. Everything you put down feels clunky and weird. An object at rest stays at rest.
Here are some exercises that serve as the force which acts upon that object (you):
start just before the beginning
One of the writing world’s favorite phrases to shove down your throat is “Start at the beginning.” And while that’s true for when you are trying to level up your story to Publishable, this is draft one and it’s super easy to chop out a scene or two later.
Maybe you just need a little kick to get you going. Write a prologue from the perspective of the villain. Write a chapter one that takes place the day before the inciting incident. Write a flashback about an important moment in your protag’s childhood. Tell yourself you will cut this out later so there is zero pressure and then write.
start way before the beginning
If you need more time to build up your momentum, go back further. Tell your character’s origin story. Make a short story out of their early years. If there is part of your character’s backstory that affects who they are now/affects the plot of your story, explore that even if it doesn’t fit into the flow of your actual story. This serves both as momentum builder and character developer.
start after the beginning
Those first few pages are heavy. The writing world tells us our first chapter HAS TO immediately make the reader care about the characters don’t intro too many characters don’t have backstory get conflict in there as soon as possible must be able to hook a reader in the first 250 words if your first line is lame an editor won’t even bother to read more
Sometimes it’s just too much.
Personally, I suck at beginnings. I never know where my stories need to start. My beginnings never feel right. My characters are awkward because I only know how to build characters within the context of a story, and the story hasn’t been established. And I’m always always always thinking This could be better this could be more powerful this should have more–
So, listen. You can come back to it. Your beginning will be so much easier to see, you’ll be so much more comfortable with the story world and the characters if you know where exactly your beginning is heading. Outline that first chapter, or the first two chapters, and then start where the outline ends and just dive in. Once you know where you’re going and what you’re doing, you can whip those first chapters out and you can probably leave some nice little foreshadowing hints that maybe you wouldn’t have thought of before.
start at the end
I know writers who say they can’t know the end of their book until they get there otherwise it ruins it for them, and to those writers I say ?????? That sounds fake but okay. (Do y’all not ever reread books? Also I’m glad y’all have your brain together enough to be able to form a coherent narrative arc without at least sort of knowing where you’re going but I do not have that ability)
(Personally I love knowing the ending before I start because I’m able to give every scene purpose and direction toward a certain goal, I am able to twist my subplots as I go to make everything more powerful for that finale, I love dropping little easter eggs and symbols as I go, but that’s just me.)
Starting at the end, writing that climax scene or that denouement scene first can be a great way to give your beginning direction. Once you’ve solidified in your brain where your story is going, it’s easier to let it go and to guide it efficiently.
You will certainly have to change at least a few things about your ending scene when you’ve worked through the rest of your story to that point because stories never behave exactly as we want them to, but that’s perfectly fine. There’s no pressure in writing that ending either because you know the ending is going to change, so you can worry about making it the best it can be later.
~
The most important thing is to just get the words going. Anything that get’s you writing without having a panic attack is good and purposeful and beneficial, even if no one will ever read it ever again.
If you start writing, the words will come.

okay but being best friends with luke and him always carrying around an extra sweatshirt because he knew that you liked wearing his instead of your own because his were roomier and somehow softer and always smelled like luke’s house, but people around campus had gotten the idea stuck in their heads that the two of you were dating just because you wore his sweatshirts. and maybe you were a lil handsy with each other. and called each other “babe” on a daily basis. until one day when you were casually leaning back against a wall with luke standing in front of you, your hands stuffed into the pocket of his hoodie, talking about classes and shit when you ask him “hey, you wanna date? i mean, most of the campus alread thinks we’re dating” and he just shrugs his shoulders and says “alright”, leaving you to say “cool….wanna make out?”

Friends? Part 6 (C.H)
[Part 1] [Part 5]
At the sound of those words, Calum’s heart stopped. It felt like it was mercilessly being crushed by millions and millions of tons, the blood inside it seeming to vanish from the impact, not even given a chance to seep out and stain his shirt. His pain would have to go unnoticed. The loss of life in his chest took his breathing from him too. It was at this moment that Calum had realized that his feelings for you weren’t meaningless, that Katerina was right. He wouldn’t be chasing you if he hadn’t fallen completely head over heals for you. He denied these feelings for you for so long, leaving himself, and you, in dishonest relationships only to become free of his the day before you were being cornered in yours. He knew you were slipping from him but now found it so hard to get a grip around you, to stop you, but now you’ve fallen from between his fingers. Calum’s head fell and he stared at his lap. He squeezed his eyes shut, wanting to start everything over, to get things right. Maybe, he thought, when I open my eyes, I can start again. But he knew how childish that was. He finally realized how much he loved you, it’s just a shame it took a proposal from someone else to make him see it.
He felt like he was holding his breath for hours as the silence in the room grew thicker. Around him were smiling faces, all accept for yours. You wore a slight crack between your lips, furrowed brows and a crease in your forehead. Your wide eyes flickered between Calum and the ring. Andrew let out a sigh and a chuckle, removing the ring from the box and grabbing your hand. “Listen, I know this might be too soon but I want to be with you, you are the one for me–” He started, moving the ring to your finger.
“But you aren’t,” you revealed in a hushed voice, stopping Andrew from going any further. Calum let air fill his lungs and lifted his head to look between the two of you, his heart suddenly alive again, pounding in his chest once more.
“I-I’m sorry?” Andrew stammered, his hand slowly lowering from yours as you tugged your hand out of his grasp.
“Andrew,” you avoided looking around the room at the shocked expressions. Andrew had not stood from his kneeling position so you kneeled down on the floor in front of him, “I’m sorry,” you placed your hand over his, covering the ring between his fingers. His head dropped into his hands out of embarrassment.
“Why?” He quavered. You made the mistake of looking up at the shocked and sympathetic faces in your living room, making you stumble over your words. “Are you just not ready?” He asked, looking back up at you with red eyes, “was this too soon?” You dropped your gaze from his and stared down at your hands in your lap as you shook your head. Andrew took a deep breath to stop himself from tearing up more. “Then why? Can you please give me a reason?”
Calum watched you, along with everyone else, but he hoped to catch your eye. He wanted some type of confirmation that he was the reason you had rejected Andrew. He wanted to know he had a chance. You just looked back up at Andrew, who had fallen onto both his knees now, and stood back up, pulling him up with you. You hoped this would help him keep some of his dignity.
“Can we talk about this in private?” You implored, not wanting to drag the scene on anymore. At this, Andrew furrowed his brow at you.
“No,” he protested.
“Andrew–”
“Y/N, just tell me, why?”
You really didn’t know how you would’ve told him in the first place if you got him alone but now that he had put you before an audience, no words managed to leave your mouth. The answer rested in your eyes and only Calum could read it. You glanced over at Cal and he stared right back at you. All the confirmation he needed was right there, in your eyes, and now he knew. But Andrew had caught on, his eyes followed yours right to the guilty person. The reason you had humiliated him was sitting there on your couch and he burned a hole in the side of Calum’s head until Cal looked back at Andrew and that was all the confirmation Andrew needed. Now, they both knew.

Friends? Part 5 (C.H)
[Part 1] [Part 4]
The buzzing in your coat pocket made you step to the side to let the other pedestrians pass. You leaned against the stone wall of the building at your side and fished your phone from your pocket. You were hoping it was Calum since you hadn’t heard from him in a while and you wanted to know if he was okay. It was Andrew instead and you felt bad for feeling your heart drop a little. He’s your boyfriend, why would you be unhappy to hear from him? Because I’d rather hear from Calum, you thought, but pushed it to the back of your head. You slid your finger across your screen, accepting the call, then put the phone to your ear.
“Hey Andrew,” you tried to sound cheerful and winced at how unconvincing you were. Luckily, Andrew didn’t notice.
“Are you almost home?”
“Yeah, I’m on my way,” you glanced around at the passers by before staring down at your shoes once more.
“Like, a street away or..? You’ll be home soon right? I’m already h–”
“Yes, I know you’re there. I won’t keep you waiting too long,” You interrupted him. You heard Andrew sigh like you not being home was the biggest problem in his life. You rolled your eyes and made your way back into the sea of people on the sidewalk. “I’ll see you soon,” and with that, you hung up the phone.
Your apartment was only a block away but the cold was getting you. You huffed out your breath and watched it appear, be caught by the wind, and disappear once again. You stepped into the closest place that looked like it’d sell any form of a hot beverage and thankfully, it did. The place was quiet and small, considering it was squished in between two other buildings, and only a few people occupied the booths and tables. You ordered a coffee on the menu that sounded delicious then started on your way out. You noticed a vaguely familiar blond man sitting at one of the tables and you stopped in your tracks. You contemplated on going over there to see if it was who you thought it was and decided why not? You walked over and stood in front of the man. You coughed awkwardly, making him look up at you from your phone.
“Hi, sorry, are–aren’t you Luke? Calum’s friend?” You inquired. He gave a small smile before replying.
“Yeah, Y/N right?” He gestured for you to have a seat. You set down your latte and took the seat across from him. “Nice to finally see you again.”
“You too. It’s been quite long, hasn’t it?” you smiled, “but, I–uh–I have a question...about Calum,” Luke rose his eyebrows you, waiting for you to ask it. “Have you seen him lately? I’ve been trying to get ahold of him and I just want to know if he’s okay.” Luke looked down at his lap, trying to decide what information he could share with you.
“Yeah, I saw him yesterday,” he looked back up at you, “He’s doing alright. He just hit a bit of a rough patch, that’s all,” you nodded your head as he spoke, “I’m sure he didn’t meant worry you or anything.”
“Of course,” you wrapped your hand around your paper cup and stood up, “thanks Luke. I’m not sure when I’ll see him again so let him know I say hi. Have a nice night.” He agreed that he’d let Cal know and waved to you as you exited the little fast food restaurant.

You entered your apartment, and to your surprise, you saw your friends standing in your kitchen and in your living room. Maya was leaning against the fridge, chatting with Ashton. Amelia was crouched in front of your fire place in your living room, trying to turn it on. Calum came into sight with a beer in hand and pointed out to Amelia how to do it. A smile crept onto your face at the sight of Calum. You were elated to see him again. Andrew appeared at your side and put hand to your shoulder, making you jump.
“Let me get that,” he started pulling off your jacket for you then hung it up. He grabbed your hand and lead you into the living room. You started to wonder why Andrew had invited your friends over but just went along with it anyway. Ashton and Maya had followed you in and you noticed snacks on the coffee table along with unattended drinks. A night of eating, drinking, and joking around was upon you. You took the opportunity to ask Cal how he was. He made mostly small talk and you could sense he was off. You were going to dig deeper but then Andrew interrupted. He tapped a fork against his glass to silence everyone, which Calum always hated, and pulled you to the front of the room.
“Before you all go home, I want to say something,” he set his beer and fork on the mantle of your fireplace, “Y/N, I have loved you for a very long time and I’m so happy you are mine,” your cheeks heated up, but not from blushing. He was making you feel guilty and as a result, you went red in the face. “That’s why I want to do this,” before you knew it, Andrew was on his knee in front of you, a ring in a velvet box held towards you and the room went silent. “Y/N Y/L/N, will you marry me?”
