Week 5: Qualities of Light
I have produced 5 photographs which exhibit qualities of light in a variety of ways. I used a parcon light and manually created the desired intensity of light and the colours and temperatures projected. I used supporting materials such as netting, a mirror and a reflective paper to cast articial shadowing, reflections and emphasise colour and light.

Surroundings
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
22/03/2019
This space is a shopping strip and transitional walk way between Swanston st and QV. I was drawn to the lively atmosphere created by the vibrant architecture and the repetition of warm artificial lights which created a visual hierarchy, leading my eye into the space. Although the area is narrow, the open ceiling evokes a sense of space and allows the small walkway to breathe. This space is located within the busy environment of the cbd, it is perceptible to traffic, large groups of people and construction noise. Although when imerged within the narrow walkway, it feels like a division from the rapid movement of the city, despite the noise being present, the visual representation of the road and traffic is not aparent, nor the mass of people who create a sense of rushed energy and crowdedness.
I wondered through the space to ponder on my thoughts and observe the shopping fronts, the atmosphere is lively but feels highly relaxed and safe.
In terms of materialistic features, the frosted glass on the ceiling of the entrance creates a form of shelter but also draws natural light into the area to brighten it up and make the walkway more inviting. The frosty texture evokes a viel over the sky and objects, creating a consistent shade and vibrancy which embodies a cool-toned atmosphere.

Model making introduction
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
23/03/2019
Introduction to model making with 3 types of paper, and an exploration of scoring, cutting, and folding techniques. After learning how to score, cut and fold, I practiced these techniques in an iterative sense to understand the material and its function. From here we were advised to create a small model representing space in a conceptual way.

Drawing-A-Day: Observational
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
18-20/03/2019
Observational sketches of my chosen area in building 10.
In the first sketch, I drew the basic shapes of the space to understand its form.
In the second sketch, I added more detail and figures to represent human interaction and movement in the space.
In the third sketch, I chose to add movement in a more symbolic way through organic line, I may apply this in my final A3 drawing tomorrow.

Testing Grounds Week 3
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
18/03/2019
Our last day at Testing grounds consisted of designing and building a structure. We had the choice of building a bench, enclosure or platform with timber planks and rope. My group decided to design a bench, we began by sketching some ideas and using small wooden sticks to create forms and ideas.
Our concept entailed building a bench which allowed people to face inward or outward depending on the social context they’re faced with. If with friends, they can face inward to converse, but if sitting individually or briefly, they can face outward. After building our designs we had to present our ideas to the rest of the group.

Escher/Nendo ‘Between Two Worlds’
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
18/03/2019
Today we visited the Escher/Nendo ‘Between two worlds’ exhibition. This was by far the best exhibition I have ever been to. An array of drawings, etchings and linocut work was submerged with spectacular installations and intimate spaces. The lighting throughout the space was generally quite dim and the walls painted black or dark grey. This created an idyllic atmosphere which was accentuated by the soft sound of violin and piano playing throughout all the rooms. Eschers idea of ‘two worlds’ is evident in the surreal and abstract approach to each peice in the exhibition. The viewing point of the installations differ and provide an alternative perspective, highlighting the fact that people interpret things differently and not all is what it seems. Although most peices appeared simplistic, they carried a deeper and more complex form when observed from different angles.
In terms of space, the hierarchy of the exhibition differs in each room. Most work is displayed at eye level which creates a submersive and intimate connection between the viewer and the peice. Other installations are of a larger scale, forcing viewers to look up and around. The exhibition as a whole was highly interactive in terms of the way it leads you through the space. The large house installations were placed in a way which forced the viewer to walk through them and into the next section of the exhibition.
The exhibition made me feel nostalgic, idyllic, calm and highly immersed into a unique and surreal world.

Drawing-A-Day #5
Tumblr media
15/03/2019
Following Fridays class, I chose to not use a ruler and instead used a free hand technique when creating lines. This added character to the sketch and created a sense of busyness within the space.

Week 2
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
15/03/2019
Todays class introduced us to perspective drawings, both one and two point. Although already having prior knowledge of this from my studies in high school, it was refreshing to go back to basics and use general methods of drawing in perspective. Since I find myself drawing in perspective commonly, I have developed a habit of drawing strictly with a ruler and by eye as I find it quicker and less confusing. Being pushed to draw without a ruler and drawing a horizon line and vanishing points was unusual for me at first, I tried my best not to fall back into my distinctive way of drawing but found it difficult.
After practicing with the space around us, we took to building 10 and were challenged to do quick perspective drawings of areas we found interesting, and to slowly develop our drawings in an iterative manner. Our assignment, due on Friday, is to produce an A3 refined perspective drawing of our chosen space in building 10. I will take this as an opportunity to do my daily drawings of this space to deepen my visual comprehension of the space and its form.

Drawing-A-Day #4

Exploring Depth and Texture
I used a stippling method with a 0.1 fineliner and replaced all straight lines with an organic approach, removing any structured and clinical aesthetics. I chose not to draw in great detail and propose a more suggestive drawing to emphasise depth. The grainy texture evoked accentuates the organic atmosphere I aimed to communicate.

Siteworks Assignment
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Engaging with space in a more intimate and proximate conduct, forced my eyes to explore light and shadow, observing the way it falls, accentuates texture, moves with the sun and human interference, and how it can add depth and visual interest to space. I observed a plant and drew the materialistic features which were most perceptible, the natural sunlight which glazed over the surface of the plant created a sense of radiance and emphasised the organic line and textures, this was the substance I aimed to capture in my drawing. While studying the plant, I noticed small movements in light when clouds veiled over the sun, and when any rapid movement created by human interference in the space occured. This heightened my realisation of the small movements in light and shadow which can be influenced by some factors involving human interaction.
My understanding of human interaction and movement was challenged when asked to create a wearable aparatus and choreograph a common human motion in relation to my chosen noun “disconnection’. The concept of disconnection in relation to space and human interaction is evident habitually, particularly with the rapid growth in technology and humans chosing to disengage with their surroundings and other individuals by shifting their focus solely towards their devices. My group and I explored choreographing this concept with the adaptation of red stocking fabric to pull over our heads and mimic a tunneling effect, creating a visual barrier and essentially fabricating a forced relationship between eye contact and our phone screens. Additionally, we cut up a white fitted sheet and used it to wrap around us, suggesting a physical connection in terms of space and proximity, in contrast to our withdrawal from interconnecting with space and other individuals.
After this abstract exploration of material, my comprehension of conceptualising physical matter and testing its limits was again disputed when challenged to use one material and manipulate it into different forms by experimenting with an array of practical techniques. Perception of our materialistic models were varying, particularly when placing figures to create a sense of scale and when using photographic techniques, considering angles, lighting, background and editing.
Over the course of three days, my perception of light, movement, texture, human interaction, and space has deepened after exploring and experimenting with materials, drawing, performance art and photography.

Everyday Choreography
‘Disconnection’
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
13/03/2019
Siteworks Week 2, Day 2 Intensive
Project ‘Everyday Choreography’
Exploring the word ‘disconnection’
Today we were assigned into groups of 4-5 with people we hadn’t met. An array of words ranging from ‘strain’ to ‘equilibrium’ were provided and we were challenged to choreograph a movement relevant to our word of choice and ultimately make a wearable apparatus to support our movement conceptually. We needed to accentuate our chosen word carefully through materials we used and the way we wore our apparatus.
My group chose the word ‘disconnect’, we sketched and brainstormed movements relevant to the lexeme and then acted them out to understand the types of movement we could focus on. Lack of eye contact, disengagement, and separation were our key ideas which we communicated through the use of mobile devices in a small space with other people present.
We used a red stocking to wrap around our heads and create a tunnelling effect, evoking a barrier between ourselves and the environment, and additionally drawing the focal point towards our devices and away from human interaction. We cut up a white fitted sheet and tied it in knots to create a physical connection between all humans within the space. The space is represented as intimate despite the disconnection between the subjects.

Siteworks Week 2, Day 1 Intensive.
Today at Siteworks, we met as a group at 9:30. We spent the first 2 hours watching a presentation by the tutors and learning what we’ll be doing during the 3 day intensive here.
Prior to today, we were asked to bring a cake or savoury item as a ‘model’ to do technical drawings of. We drew the cake to a 1:1 scale, depicting the top and front view, then before cutting into the cake, drew 2 predictions of what the interior of the cake might look like by drawing shapes and textures. We needed to evoke the interior of the cake if it were cut horizontally and vertically. After our predictions, we actually cut into our cakes and then drew a to scale, representation of the cake and its textures.
After this project, we needed to do another drawing but instead of representing it to scale, we needed to evoke the materialism we are drawn to, such as light, sound, movement, shadows, temperature etc. I drew a leaf sitting by a window and studied the changes in light reflected onto the plant, the light changed with the wind outside, human movement in the building and by the clouds shifting. I used a rubber to accentuate the light and created a sense of diffused light around the plant to symbolise the atmosphere and overall lighting.
Lastly, we gathered in groups and were provided an array of materials like tape, string, spray cans and rubbish bags, and were challenged to create an invisible entity such as light, movement, sound, wind, shadow, depth etc by composing a sculpture-like structure with the materials. My group and I agreed to convey motion and chose to use the opening gates of site works to wrap string around. The individual bits of string act as a map of peoples movement in and out of the public space.

A DRAWING-A-DAY #3
- Exploring depth, movement, and sound
In this perspective drawing, I decided to keep the interior features minimal to focus on applying some form of symbolism to accentuate the depth of the room, and attempt to add a sense of sound and/or movement through line.
I strictly applied straight lines when drawing physical space but when representing the invisible entities, I used free hand lines in contrast. This technique worked well and achieved the sound and movement essence I intended to illustrate, I could improve the exaggeration of depth by overlapping more lines towards the centre.

In-2-Photo: ‘develop your own understandings of the varied relations that produce interior experiences in an urban area.’
Produce; 1 A0 photograph within an A0 photograph, 10 drawings, 5 A5 photographs in response to the brief.
In my final A0 photograph, I decided to explore human behavior and time as changing conditions. I photographed the space first at 1:15pm, during a busier time of the day when the space serves its primary transitional function. The sun also plays a role in producing natural light, shadows, and reflections which embody a lively ambience. At 5:45pm the space has a completely different atmosphere. The lobby acts as a place of reflection and thought, a moment to ponder and appreciate, in much contrast to the busy and rapid movement it encounters earlier in the day. Artificial light fills the room and replaces the natural shadows and reflections creating a completely different ambience, the spacious floors and high ceilings create an overall inviting and engaging experience.
In the 5 photographs I chose to submit, I selected a variety of contrasting natural and artificial lighted areas during their less busy times in the day to accentuate the interior features without human interaction. I found from this study that interiors with artificial lighting can feel quite daunting and undesirable without any human behavior, particularly if the space is smaller with standard or low ceilings. In contrast, I photographed very open, spacious areas which felt inviting and alleviating without the help of human occupation.
In the 10 drawings I submitted (will post separately), I attempted to evoke different invisible entities such as movement, ambience, sound etc, through some symbolism, colour, and different techniques.

DRAWING-A-DAY #2
- Exploring Depth, application Techniques, and Texture
In this sketch, I used an irregular cross-hatching technique with a fine liner to indicate the changes in tone which essentially created a strong sense of contrast and depth. I stepped out of my comfort zone and applied the fine liner in a messy and quick manner not worrying too much about staying within the lines or making the sketch too dark. As a result, I am intrigued by the unique texture I produced and how it creates a sense of movement, the sketch is also representative of figure-ground as well.
