Optimizing Fractionating Column Efficiency: S-Cube’s Approach to Enhanced Separation
Tumblr media
Fractionating columns are crucial in industries like chemicals and pharmaceuticals, where they play a central role in separating mixtures based on boiling points. These columns are essential in distillation processes, where liquid and vapor phases interact repeatedly to achieve optimal separation.
One of the key factors in maintaining high separation efficiency within fractionating columns is the effective management of liquid and vapor traffic. Liquid distributors, which evenly distribute the liquid across the column’s packing or trays, are essential in ensuring proper flow dynamics. Without proper flow management, maldistribution can occur, reducing the contact between liquid and vapor phases and ultimately compromising column efficiency.
At S-Cube, we utilize state-of-the-art simulation tools to analyze the behavior of liquid and vapor traffic within fractionating columns. These advanced simulations provide insights into how varying flow rates and operational conditions impact column performance. This data allows us to design column internals such as distributors, packing, and trays — that precisely match the necessary liquid flow rates, while also accommodating a wide range of operational scenarios.
This meticulous design process is at the heart of ensuring that the column operates at peak efficiency. By optimizing the flow and minimizing energy consumption, we help our clients achieve the highest level of separation performance. Our focus on precision and efficiency supports our clients in reaching their specific industrial goals, ensuring their processes are both energy-efficient and reliable.

Oil-Water Separator Internals: A Game-Changer in Compressed Air Operations
Inside an air compressor, oil-water separator internals from S-Cube Mass Transfer Pvt. Ltd. perform the critical task of separating water from oil and suspended solids. This oil serves to lubricate the rotary screw and other internal components. Alongside these internal separators, external oil-water separators can also be deployed to enhance system efficiency.
Why Oil-Water Separator Internals are Essential
During the compression process, external contaminants like water vapor, dust, and grime mix with hot oil. As the air cools toward the end of compression, contaminated condensate forms. If this moisture accumulates in the distribution system (air receivers, filter bowls, or moisture separators), it can infiltrate the compressed air system, causing severe equipment damage and jeopardizing final product quality.
An oil-water separator from S-Cube is indispensable for mitigating this risk, ensuring system reliability, and promoting sustainability. These separators utilize the gravity difference between oil and water to separate contaminants effectively. Sludge settles at the bottom, oil rises to the top, and wastewater remains in the middle layer — ready for further treatment.
How Oil-Water Separator Internals Work
Wastewater is funneled into the separator, passing through filters that extract larger solids. It then flows across a series of chambers where oil particles are separated and rise to the surface. The patented multi-stage filtration system ensures most oil and contaminants are removed, reducing treatment expenses while being eco-friendly.
Step-by-Step Filtration Process:
Condensate Collection: Untreated condensate enters the system.
Depressurization: Initial separation occurs in a muffler-equipped expansion chamber.
Primary Filtration: In column A, the condensate passes through oleophilic media that absorbs oil while allowing water to flow through. The filter, made of oil-absorbing fibers, ensures continuous surface cleaning.
Status Indicators: The filter’s consumption is tracked by indicator sticks. Filters are replaced before they fully submerge, ensuring optimal performance.
Secondary Filtration: Prefiltered condensate enters column B, containing activated carbon to absorb residual oil.
Clean Water Discharge: The processed water exits the separator with an oil content of 4 mg/gal — safe for disposal and compliant with environmental standards.
Benefits of Oil-Water Separator Internals
Cost Optimization: Reduces compressed air waste treatment expenses.
Eco-Friendly Solution: Ensures compliance with environmental regulations.
High Efficiency: Multi-stage filtration for enhanced performance.

Specification and Features of Demister Pads / Mist Eliminators
Demister Pads (Mist Eliminators) are key components used to prevent product loss, enhance filtration efficiency, and protect equipment. Typically mounted at the top of vessels, they trap liquid droplets carried by gas before releasing the clean gas. These pads are used across industries such as cooling towers, ventilation systems, and air scrubbers.
How Demister Pads Work
Gas streams pass through the demister pad, where small liquid droplets coalesce into larger ones. These heavier droplets are trapped and drained back into the system, ensuring only gas flows out. This prevents toxic chemicals and hazardous liquids from being released, thus protecting equipment from corrosion and electrical damage.
Working Principle
In processes where gas and liquid interact, entrainment of liquid droplets occurs. Demister pads separate these by causing smaller droplets to merge into larger ones that settle back into the liquid. The pad’s mesh-like structure forces vapor through obstructions, allowing liquid droplets to collect while gas exits.
Key Benefits
Efficient Mist Removal: Properly installed demister pads can capture nearly 100% of liquid droplets from contaminated vapors, reducing emissions and solvent losses.
Equipment Protection: Prevents liquid droplets from escaping, reducing the risk of equipment damage due to corrosion or fouling.
Custom Design & Easy Installation: Demister pads are custom-built to match facility needs and are easy to install. They are designed for low pressure drop and corrosion resistance, ensuring long-lasting performance.
Versatile Design: Available in various shapes and sizes to fit specific systems, these pads can be tailored for vertical or horizontal flow processes.
Materials & Applications
Made from stainless steel, polypropylene, or PTFE, demister pads are durable and suitable for high-temperature and corrosive environments. These materials are ideal for industries like petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, and refineries.
Industries Served

What are two types of internals in a distillation column?
Column internals are only devices which dominates in the distillation process. They are nothing but the catalysts of mass transfer operation.
Most used column internals are packing and trays (Plates). Various industrial sectors like energy, petrochemicals, biofuel, water treatment, refining, gas processing etc. has exposed to importance of these column internals. Types of internals has been described below,
Packing
Packing are divided in further 2 types,
1. Structured Packing –
Structured packing is type of internals in which materials are arranged in unique way to enhance the efficiency of the mass transfer operation. Corrugated sheets or wire mesh materials are being used in structured packing which allows to fluid and vapour streams to get interacted with each other for better output. Structured packing has textured design which helps to increase the spreading of the liquid.
Various types of structured packing like gauge/wire mesh, knitted type, sheet metal type and grid type of packing. Each of the type has separate specifications and contribution to the process.
Without vapor liquid contact it’s impossible to have mass transfer of fluids. Better mass transfer will be followed if we use the packing which can create thin filmed liquid distribution which enhances the performance. Some packing types has textured designing on plates which increase spreading of the liquid. Such packing is more effective in case of low pressure applications.
It’ll be the best choice if the process requires the high flow rate and lower pressure drop. Lower pressure drop leads to higher volatility which turn to be an advantage in operation. Structured packing also helps to reduce foaming and increase energy efficiency. Higher capacity of packing tends to increased operating rates.
2. Random Packing-
These are the type of internals which directly get dumped into the column to carry out the process. Required surface area for operation is being provided by whole random packing. It’s used in various operations like distillation, stripping, scrubbing and Liquid-liquid extraction Etc.
Random packing is used to allow contact between 2 fluids such as liquid with gas or with liquid-liquid contact. Random packing offers higher pressure drop comparatively to structured packing. The packing selected should offer large surface area to achieve optimum surface area and effective mass transfer.
Various types of random packing which is being used in process like Raschig Ring, Pall Ring, IMTP Saddle Ring etc. which will be preferred as per the process recommendation. These packing are used in cases of small diameters towers, processes with low pressure drop, corrosive applications and in case of increased capacity as well.

Optimized Structured Packing with S Cube Mass Transfer for Superior Performance
Structured packing plays a critical role in enhancing the efficiency of chemical reactors, absorption columns, and distillation columns. Manufacturers, such as S Cube Mass Transfer, carefully select materials designed to improve fluid flow and maximize surface area for effective phase interaction. Structured packing typically consists of corrugated metallic plates that are engineered to guide fluid through optimized paths, promoting efficient gas-liquid contact. This design, often compared to a honeycomb structure, minimizes gas flow resistance while maximizing the available surface area. Common materials used in structured packing include corrugated wire gauze sheets and perforated metals, offering durability and enhanced mass transfer capabilities.
Key Features of Structured Packing:
Maximized surface area for increased gas-liquid interaction.
Low-pressure drop design, ideal for low-pressure applications.
Enhanced fluid dispersion for optimal performance in a range of industrial processes.
Structured packing is especially valuable in processes that involve fluid contact rather than direct physical touch, making it a popular choice in distillation, absorption, and stripping applications. In low-pressure applications, structured packing offers superior performance by improving mass transfer efficiency and reducing energy consumption.
Advantages Over Packing Trays
In situations where packing trays are used and performance issues arise, structured packing is often employed as a replacement. Here are three primary reasons why structured packing outperforms traditional trays:

What is Pall Ring Packing and How Is It Used in Process Plants?
Pall Rings are the similar Packing as Raschig Rings with windows and/or fingers only in addition to it. The development of Pall Rings was a huge replacement in random packing segment. By punching tabs in the wall of the ring, it created internal drip points which drastically increases capacity and efficiency by more than 50% over the Raschig Ring Packing. Like the Raschig Ring Packing, Pall Rings are characterized by having the same height as its diameter. Pall Rings are often used in absorption and distillation services.
They are still widely used in the industry owing to their performance with good capacity characteristics at low- pressure drops. This adjustment provides a significant performance increase, resulting in an improvement of the capacity and efficiency.
Pall rings also has been divided as metallic and plastic segment as per their application. Metallic Pall rings are made from heat resistant and chemical corrosion resistant plastic. That’s why, metallic type pall rings are mostly used in distillation columns, reaction towers, quench towers and other vessels. Metal pall ring is commonly applied to all sorts of decarbonization and system of synthetic ammonia. Pall rings can be used for mass transfer operations that often includes stripping, gas scrubbing, de-aeration, biological filtration, degassing, and mechanical filtration.
How Pall Rings are used in Process?
1. Metallic Pall Rings -
As we know, the design of the pall ring is an inspired from the Raschig ring design. The cylindrical dimensions are quite similar; however, the metal pall ring has two rows of punched to form drips and fingers facilitating vapor flow. This adjustment provides a significant performance increase, resulting in an improvement of the capacity and efficiency. In addition, this adjusted design leads to overall reduction of the pressure drop throughout the column.
The metal pall rings are mechanically robust and provided by us in various sizes and in different types of material which can be stand at specific application. We are also provider and leading exporter of ceramic and plastic pall rings. Contact us to get solution for your mass transfer challenge.

2. Plastic Pall Rings -
The plastic pall ring is one of random packing product offered by us. For over fifteen years, our random packing is effectively used to improve a tower’s operation and performance as well. The pall ring is considered world’s most common random packing type.
Plastic pall rings are less sensitive to liquid distribution quality and having higher liquid hold-up and residence time in comparison to other packing segment. Although the plastic pall rings do not have “high performance” characteristics, they have been used extensively and therefore their performance is widely known. Like saddles, the plastic pall rings have become a standard for many designers and processes.
The rings are also used to replace metal pall rings in applications which are in need of the excellent corrosion resistance of the plastic material. Plastic materials for the production of tower packing have recently been widely used in many application fields which formerly were restricted to metals, special alloys and ceramic materials only where Plastic pall rings stands out. The application fields of the individual plastic materials are determined by chemical processes, resistance, temperature stability and mechanical strength.
Applications -
Water treatment
Drinking water applications
CO2, SO2, HCI and HF absorption or stripping
Chlorine absorption in water or caustic
