Haiiii :3 kindaaa random but what do you think about the fact that Emmet canonically(?) can sing opera? Also would that technically mean that he's a pretty good singer overall too? I dunno if it works like that but he DID slay those high notes while opera singing...

UH- i do think that Emmet would be a good singer. Afterall, he did manage to distract all of the robots by singing Everything is Awesome when he and Lucy were breaking into Octan.

It was a bit awkward, but I think we can excuse him since he was winging that whole scene.

Also I personally hc that Emmet can play the guitar.

No particular reason.

Just think it would be nice.

Thinking about one of your recent posts and...... Do you think Emmet ever had actual depression? If so, when? And how much? (And by that I mean like. was he depressed but just unaware it was depression? Was he aware and actually once considered ending himself? That last one sounds ooc but one fanfic kinda explored that idea and. Idk I just liked it) Would've his friends ever picked up on it? What would they do if they ever did? AUGH im sorry man I just love the thought of Emmet depression.......... Also you could take that as a request if you want. idk do whatever you want with this <3

I was originally going to go on a really long rant.

But this ended up staying in the drafts for way too long.

SO here we go-

My feelings about Emmet and whether or not he has depression depends on what mood I'm in, and what I can do with it. So I guess the answer is both yes and no.

I don't think Emmet really had any kind of severe depression or really any kind of long term depression at all. If you look at it from the surface, it just feels a bit out of character for him to have it.

Emmet is modelled to be the bright sunshine main character who's there to lead everyone to their goals and keep their spirits up. Now I'm not saying those characters don't have depression, but the lego movie is a kids movie and the creators definitely did not think that deep into Emmet's character.

Emmet generally looks on the bright side of things, which does make it seem like he purposefully ignores a lot of the bad things that happen. But I think he does see the bad things, he just chooses to do things that take people's minds off them.

Looking at it from the surface, and comparing Emmet to other characters, you wouldn't think that he was depressed. But if you're like me and overthink character dynamics, you inevitably descend into a rabbit hole of nitpicking small details and sticking them together like a madman.

Anyways-

I do still think he might have some form of depression or other issue, but he either 1. Does not understand what he's feeling, or 2. Feel like he has nothing to be upset about, and push it down.

I've mentioned that a lot haven't I?

Emmet has these scenes where you can see that smile of his drop, and his insecurities beginning to show through that crack in his facade.

Depression's complicated man. People can say you're a delight to be around, and have a happy-go-lucky attitude -and still have moments where you can't get out of bed because you're just too tired to do anything.

A lot of the issues I give Emmet and any of the lego movie cast are just headcanons, so you really don't have to accept everything I personally think

There are actually a few scenarios I would consider Emmet to be suicidal, which you could translate it into his self sacrificial tendencies.

But to be honest, that's a whole other topic in of itself.

also in addition to the song i sent, the main character from the book (gregory samsa) was also isolated by the people he cared for - his family. so yeah have that ig.

I just briefly skimmed though the storyline of that book, and fucking hell that plot is depressing.

I can see some of the parts where you could relate it back to Emmet and Rex, but I think the biggest difference is that Rex wasn't intentionally abandoned and hidden away.

A point I try to make with his isolation in Undar and the role Lucy and the others play in it is that they did look for him. They did care about what happened to their friend. The issue is that they gave up a lot quicker than they should've.

From what I've seen in the book, the mc's family tosses him aside to die when they've gotten tired of dealing with him. Lucy and all of Emmet's other friends might've done some shitty things, but I don't think any of them would purposefully toss him aside like that.

It's all perspective really when it comes to how Rex was abandoned.

Rex sees it as his 'friends' losing interest in him

Apparently it's inspired by the book Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, which the main theme is about how alienation and isolation (*cough cough* Apocalypseburg and Undar *cough*) (i may be reaching) can change a person when you look it up and wow! that sure sounds like someone...

In all seriousness though, this is one heck of a song to match up with Emmet/Rex. I can definitely see the areas that match with Rex as a character, and I think that this song in particular is more or less happening during the blurred transition from Emmet to Rex.

Funny how a lot of the chorus is just the singer in a constant state of pain. Emotional pain probably.

Obviously, Rex and his feeling are taking one hell of a beating throughout Undar, and I know that I've mentioned this quite a lot, but undar is where the Emmet is crushed under the weight of many realizations that crumbles what's left of his personality.

Undar really just... scoops all of his feelings to the surface and lets that anger burn Emmet from the inside out.

The song does dip into reality and how the MC perceives it, and a hc of mine is that Rex has a really shaky relationship with reality since the has seen the way the world of the man upstairs works.

He knows how his reality is really just made from the imagination of Finn and Bianca, and that just leaves him almost disconnected compared to other Lego people.

And a line in the song that I really like is 'Even if I’ll become a shadow of my former self', mostly because Rex has changed a lot from what Emmet used to be, and he is a shadow of what he used to believe in.

He's so god damn angsty I love him so much.

I sent it in tags already but I also wanna send it as an ask:

5 years is honestly a crazy amount of time if you pull in real world logic. In a lot of medias you have characters stay trapped for 30 or thousands of years in prison, and while it's an impressive amount of time it's not that easy to sympathize with - unless you're a convict ig 😭

5 years is a lot easier to visualize, though, a lot easier to relate to and sympathize with. No angst for the sake of angst. A realistic, 4-5 time frame that would make sense for a toy to go missing in.

Idk about anyone else, but my views on people or troubling situations can change in the span of DAYS, weeks or months at best.

So the fact it took two entire years for Emmet to even START breaking is truly a testament to how strong his will is, and just how much pressure from all sides it takes to shatter it. Constant "proof" that his friends never cared about him right in his line of sight, and yet he remains optimistic for over 730 days. Seven hundred and thirty days of holding onto hope. Some would call that naive. I think it's inspiring.

...it really sounds like a lot when you put in that perspective, huh? And that's only year two. Out of five.

No wonder Rex is the way he is. He stops being so violently out of character to Emmet once you put it into perspective just how much it took to drag him down to this point

Probably around 60 months, 260 weeks 1,826 days, 43800 hours, 2628000 minutes, and 157788000 seconds.

Long time to be paralysed and stuck with your own thoughts, watching as the people you called friends move on without a second thought.

It's just angst.

That's the whole thing about those 5 years, it's just Emmet suffering.

Compared to tons of other media where characters are trapped for a long time by themselves, it is pretty common for them to go insane or go on a whole villain arc as revenge to the people who wronged them.

On some occasions, said characters come out the 'same', but that should be taken with a grain of salt, since those times a lot of what was their life has been torn away, and they have to help another group of people.

The thing is, is that these characters that are trapped are usually able to do something while trapped. It really the isolation that’s a common appearance between them.

Emmet had a chance to watch the world move on. He wasn’t able to do anything during those 5 years but watch and think.

I say he starts to break after 2 years because while he’s able to stay optimistic through the first stretch of isolation, the reality of the situation eats away at him.

Some people might say "Oh that's not the worst, apocalypseburg lasted 5 years as well." Which... okay it did last 5 years too, but all of those things that happened over those 5 years also transferred to the years in undar.

Emmet finally breaking and deciding to change his whole personality and sense of self was the after-effect of his treatment in the first movie, apocalypseburg, and undar.

It wasn't just Undar that broke him. Everything before that piled ontop of him until that one event finally made him snap.

I guess at the end of the day that's all he really is. A man. One that has gone though way too much and finally cracked under all the pressure.

Emmet is an individual that possesses a lot of willpower to be able to keep up his cheeriness for most of his life, especially in the face of dangerous or depressing situations that would otherwise end with other people giving up.

But that cheeriness was also making him push down any negative feelings he had. Emmet is the reliable ray of sunshine in everyone's eyes, he had to ignore all the hateful comments to keep up that happiness.
