New lady in waiting? Sabina scoffed at that. Usually she would have kept a calm exterior, but the image of her last lady in waiting being decapitated in front of her by rebel soldiers was rather fresh in her mind. She wasn't entirely sure she wanted this new one with her white skin and her excess of skirts.
No, Sabina did not feel very much acting a lady towards this blonde thing beside her. She was sure she would have to be all smiles once she reached court, but could not bring herself to extend this false courtesy to Lady Mary Bell.
The lie, "It's a pleasure to meet you," and a handshake were all Sabina could muster in the way of polite conduct.
She then turned to stare out of the window once more. They were passing what felt like the twentieth lake of the journey.
"It's awfully wet here isn't it?" she observed. "I hope I don't have to stay long. I suspect they'll marry me off to some strapping lad with a good amount of land."

Mei was pleased at her daughter's enthusiasm. It would be put to good use in the coming months.
"It's fallen to the rebels," she said calmly. "All claims to the throne are supposedly dead and you know what that means? It's a land prime for the picking and we, my dear, are going to pick it."
Mei chuckled and leapt from her throne, extremely agile for a woman her age.
"Let's get to planning," she said, taking her daughters hands in her own. "Don't tell your father we started without him," she added in a giddy whisper.

@Mary (The Middle Lands)
Sabina's white-skinned captors kept reminding her that she was not being held prisoner, but being rescued. It hadn't felt like much of a rescue. Men in armor kept saying how she was lucky to be alive, how she'd be murdered by republican rebels by now if they hadn't shot down her horse, bound her in rope, and forced her into a carriage.
Sabina herself felt that she would have been safe in Akkaydea by sunrise, a far friendlier kingdom than the Middle Lands.
Now she was held captive, her freedom revoked for a very long time into the foreseeable future.
The carriage was moving to quickly and the blonde Lady who they had picked up a mile back kept staring at her.
"Is there anything I can help you with?" snapped Sabina.
The Lady was named Mary Bell and she was a sure sign that they were almost at the capital; ladies never ventured far from civilization if they knew what was good for them.

He might be right about the celebration, but he had been right every other night he'd climbed into bed long after she'd fallen asleep. This fight felt as though it would never ever. Every night Quin had something vastly important to do (and it was always vastly important) but there was only so many month of importance that Prisca could take.
Of course that night was important. Every night was. With so many important nights, surely he could take one off.
She didn't allow her frustration to show. Instead, she smiled up at her lover and said sweetly, "Of course. You're quite right."
Then, before Quin could start talking about the good fight once more, Prisca kissed him hard.

The fact that the revolutionaries of Regale had finally won the civil war fell on the delighted ears of Queen Mei just several hours after the capital had fallen.
“Perfect,” she said once her closest advisor, Jian Lin, had given her the news.
As sunlight streamed through the large stained glass windows of the great hall, Mei leaned back in her throne and smiled to herself.
Mei had been waiting for this moment since the first cry of civil war in the kingdom to the west. The Chen family, the Royalty to which Mei belonged, had for so long desired to take any land beyond their own, and now that Regale had fallen into the unstable hands of revolutionaries, this was the perfect chance to pounce.
“Fetch my daughter,” ordered Mei of Jian. “There’s no time to waste.”
