Back on my "Madge lives and her and Gale get married" bullshit.

After Haymitch tells Madge about her iconic aunt in more detail than her mother was probably able to (grief, ya know? - or maybe just a different side of her than Madge's mother knew), Madge tells Gale and then they decide to name their first baby Maysilee "Maisie" Hawthorne.

The amount of Gale hate and amount of people misunderstanding his character making me a Gale defender awfully fast. And I didn't even like that guy. Text under is rumbling and english not my first language, be aware before reading it.

Gale is as flawed as it gets. His trauma response of being a part of severely oppressed group is anger. I'm not blaming him for not wanting to show mercy or understanding for those who benefits regime that kills him and people like him. Gale is insufferable person I see it clearly. But he also still only 20-21? at the end of trilogy, abd honestly there isn't that much time to self reflection when all you do is trying to keep yourself and people close to you alive.

I think of moment between Gale and Madge, when he reacts with aggression even if he understands the divine between classes of people born from tesserae is just another tool to divide people.

There also a point where Gale a blamed by fandom because Coin used a strategy that he only partially helped to create? And as a person living in a country with a war in a full blast 40+- km away from my home, a double bombing isn't that rare or that original idea. People really would rather blame a guy who did strategy pretty gruesome but effective things from his hunter experience than blame a person in a power position that make it happen.

(it's also very funny when same people say Caesar Flickerman is a good guy)

AND ALSO!!!!! GALE NEVER WOULD HAVE DONE A SINGLE THING THAT HE DID IF HE KNEW IT WOULD KILL PRIM. that boy's ONLY goal in life was to keep prim everdeen alive. he was the first person katniss went to when she got reaped to ensure prim was safe, and gale PROMISED that he would keep her alive and safe

gale adored her to death, and there is not a single thing he would have not done to keep her safe. he had no fucking idea that prim would be in the capitol, let alone what his bomb would be used for—that burden is strictly on coin and on coin alone. gale loved prim, he would have rather blown out his own brains than played even a Small part in her death

like i get it's so easy to not like him and gale frustrates me all the time, but that's only because i know what he doesn't. the dude is left in the dark for almost the entire series. he knows NOTHING, and katniss has never been the kind of person to offer anything up, especially not after all of snow's threats

"prim reaper" yeah ok whatever gale would have burnt district 12 down himself if he felt that would keep prim safe. he loved that little girl just as much as katniss did

the biggest factor for the misconception of Gale’s intentions behind his acts comes from the narrative coming from Katniss’s mind and until you guys understand it, we’ll never get better as a community.

My favorite argument —although stupid— is how Gale was responsible for Katniss’s confusion with her feelings because he kept pushing her to make a decision, and the pressure made her feel forced to choose him over Peeta and that was the reason why she took so long to assume she loved Peeta…but you all forget that, though we knew exactly what was going inside Katniss’s mind, Gale had nothing. He couldn’t know about how conflicted her feelings for him was or how she felt during their kisses. Through his eyes, that was the girl he loved who, while saying she didn’t want their relationship to change, still spared no effort to kiss him in random times and feed his expectations of one day running away with him. Katniss never said she loved him, but she never said she didn’t either. He didn’t forced her to choose him, he just wanted her to put a end to his torment and chose one of them. Stop gambling with his heart

He was hopeful toward the probability of her choosing him because he loved her, and he was angry because she was forced —cause she was forced— to engage in a quite-fake relationship with a guy she’d just met, as a result of the Capitol ripping her away from their family and throwing her into a Arena to fucking fight her way out. And as if it wasn’t bad enough, now he had to pretend he was the cousin of the woman he wanted to be his wife and had to watch her act as she was madly in love with a guy that, for all she said, she didn’t want to be with.

He couldn’t know about the bread. He couldn’t know how real Katniss’s feelings were when she kissed Peeta in the cave. He couldn’t know how genuinely she cared about him. The only person who could say anything about it was Katniss, and she was too busy denying —even to herself— any feelings for him, while still randomly giving Gale some expectation

Katniss confusion and desperation wasn’t on him, because for most of the time he didn’t know about President Snow’s threads or the pressure she was under for being forced to convince Panem that she was madly in love with Peeta, because she —understandably so— haven’t told him. From his perspective, she was either secret in love with him and forced to pretend she wasn’t or she was playing really hard with his feelings and he had all the right to ask her to cut the crap and be honest with them

The narrative always control the way we see things, and is important to know how to differentiate the facts we know because we’re reading her mind, to the things that were shared between characters

how do you interpret Katniss “only finding relief” when she finds out Gale goes to 2? I never saw it as her being relieved he is gone and I was shocked when a lot of the Gale haters took the line that way? I saw it as a (pardon the Wicked reference) “I hope you're happy in the end, I hope you're happy my friend” type of situation. She’s genuinely happy for him. She’s also obviously grieving a lot at the time, needless to say, and I always saw her rejection of a future with Gale as being a self esteem issue than an actual lack-of-feelings issue (and definitely not a “prim reaper” issue oh my god like the jokes were ok at first but now I genuinely block on sight people who blame him)

“I think about going to the lake, but I’m so weak that I barely make it to my meeting place with Gale. I sit on the rock where Cressida filmed us, but it’s too wide without his body beside me. Several times I close my eyes and count to ten, hoping that when I open them, he will have materialized without a sound as he so often did.”

With this line, Katniss still had feelings for Gale and she was still missing him. Also this moment is so sad and I usually tear up reading it. Anyways, to go back to your question, I think that Katniss felt relief likely more so due to her trauma and the war finally being over, rather than not wanting to see Gale again. I also remember from their final conversation Katniss has a whole inner monologue where she wants to forgive Gale and expresses how sad she is.

I became a part of the fandom in 2023 and let me tell you the hunger games fandom on tiktok was BRUTAL. A misconception of Gale’s reaction to Katniss’s Prep Team

Gale didn’t want or think that Katniss’s prep team deserved to be tortured. He helps Katniss safe them by attacking the guard so that Katniss can break in. He was also appalled whenever he found out they were being treated like that over a piece of bread. What Gale actually asked Katniss was why Katniss cared about them. Because, while we as readers know they care about Katniss, Gale doesn’t. Because to him, they were people who were just prettying Katniss for the hunger games.

What I think is important about this is it shows that while Gale may not like or understand why Katniss likes them, he willingly saved them because it was the right thing to do and because he knew Katniss cared about them.

I’ve noticed that there’s been a resurgence in hunger games fans who like Gale and find his character interesting. This is awesome because I was in the trenches for as long as I liked this series because Gale’s my favorite character. I’ve seen from older posts that the Gale Tag was tagged a lot in people who were og fans who liked Gale. Because of this, I was wondering if people would want to reuse this tag, so us Gale fans can see positive Gale posts!
