The Shadow Spirit Lounge was just about the very last place one would ever think to find Sadie in. Even just the smell of alcohol tended to make her stomach churn uncomfortably, but there she was, stood at the bar, trying her best to wave down the attention of the bartender, who hadnât paid her any mind since she had walked in only some minutes ago. She appeared every bit out of her element as she felt, and had it been for any other reason, she wouldâve promptly turned on her heel and high-tailed it out before anyone noticed she was there; they often didnât notice, anyway, but even more so now than never.Â
Just when she was about to give up on her mission for the night, the bartender finally took notice and set a glass atop a napkin in front of her, gesturing to someone across the room, as they said, âThis oneâs on him.â Wide-eyed, Sadie stuttered a, âN-no, I donâtââ but the bartender had walked off to tend to someone else, and she looked over her shoulder to the stranger who bought her her drink, doing everything in her power to not physically recoil from the sly smile he shot her way.Â
She turned back around and faced the drink in front of her, sighing. No reason to let it go to waste. âExcuse me,â she said as she leaned over only just so the person sitting a few seats down from her could hear her. âYou wouldnât happen to want a drink, would you?â Only after did she hear her words, and she tried quickly to correct herself, saying, âNot that Iâ, this isnâtâ, Iâm not hitting on you, I justââ She pushed the drink closer to them, her cheeks aflame, and said, âIâm just not thirsty, is all...â

full name: sadie elizabeth novak
gender & pronouns: cisfemale, she/her
sexuality: lesbian
family: merideth novak (mother)
birthplace: shadow valley, new hampshire
sign:Â virgo (september 15)Â
personality type: infp
shadow valley was all sadie had ever know, which is why she poured through every book the library offered growing up to escape to faraway lands, with mystical creatures and fearless heroines and, most importantly of all, always a happy ending.Â
it wasnât as if her life was horrendously bad â it just... could have been better, especially in regards to her mother, whose heart had grown bitter with age. her father had left when sadie was only a few months old, so all she ever knew of him was the tattered photo she once found pressed in between the pages of a childrenâs book her mother said he used to read to her. he was handsome and fair, with a smile so strikingly similar to hers. in the photo, a younger version of her mother stood beside him, her smile bright, her heart still soft. cradled in her motherâs arms was a baby sadie, still too young to ever know that that was the last time sheâd ever see such light in her.Â
nowadays, her mother spends more time at the shadow spirit lounge than she ever does at home, and it isnât as if sadie minds much; it allows her some peace and quiet within the walls of their tightly-packed trailer home, and whenever her mother crawls back into the beat-up couch she calls a bed, sadie takes it as her cue to find anywhere else to spend her time, like at the library or someplace in the woods with a blanket she could spread and a book she could delve into, losing herself in their worlds to keep from focusing on her own.Â
despite the hand dealted to her, sadie remains kind-hearted. she longs for more, but never allows herself to think too much on dreams that could never be, so she works on helping where she can in shadow valley, like volunteering in the community center or at the hospital. she even got a job at the townâs library, which was a welcomed change of pace from bussing tables at bobâs drive-in.Â
