i know everyone does but i love seeing david and max being out of (their typical) character, like david getting mad and swearing or max being happy and enjoying something

cause their being neglected shows up as complete opposites, max being cynical to accept his situation will never get better & force away any pain of wanting to be loved, and david being overly positive to force away the pain of his past & prove it wrong. so when it switches around and david's a little more max-like & vice versa... good shit

especially in parents day cuz they see their own flaws in each other and it allows them to feel safer letting down these shields of all-positive or all-negative.. david realizes that max's parents aren't coming, recognizes the bad of the situation, & doesn't try to make a positive spin out of it.

and because of that "negativity" max gets to see someone acknowledging that it sucks for once, and he's able to recognize that there is good because david not trying to sugarcoat things finally allows him to be seen auuuuugh

they see each other's povs just a little more and don't have this black-and-white worldview. like yin and yang- finding the good in the bad, the bad in the good, and both completing each other

because of you i've learned there is positivity in the world. because of you i recognize there is negativity in the world but i will be your positivity. KILL ME

he would do an alright job if he had the chance to adopt max but it's that the adoption process is incredibly hard and most likely not feasible especially because david's so young. and there's not any "physical" proof that max should be taken from his parents because neglect is often overlooked.

that being said i will eat up adoption fics till i die

has enough time passed for me to say i never liked the "max calls david dad by accident" trend?

accidentally calling him "dad" would mean he had some past connection or relationship with a father figure. since he hasn't had positive male role models or caring experiences with father figures, he wouldn't naturally call someone "dad". idk, always seemed weird to me.
