Bodie Island Lighthouse is situated on the northern end of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore along the Outer Banks, in Nags Head, North Carolina. This is the third lighthouse that was constructed in the area, after the first was abounded due to having a weak foundation in 1859, and the second was destroyed by Confederate troops during the Civil War in 1861. The current lighthouse stands at a height of 156ft and is one of the few remaining brick tower lighthouses located in the United States. During the day, the lighthouse's daymark pattern of horizontal black and white bands stacking up the tower is visible. At night, you can observe the original first-order Fresnel lens magnifying its light over 20 miles across the horizon, making this lighthouse not only a unique attraction but also a site with a rich history.

Lake Mattamuskeet Lodge is located in Hyde County, off of Highway 264, in the Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge. Built in 1911 as the world's largest pumping station, it has a tower that is reminiscent of a lighthouse and was intended to drain what is North Carolina's largest natural lake, Lake Mattamuskeet. In 1934, this project was abandoned, and the station later became a hunting lodge for a time. Currently, the structure sits empty, but the County of Hyde and the State of North Carolina have plans to restore the lodge as an education and event center.

It should only make sense that the oldest church in North Carolina would be found in the oldest town in North Carolina. The historic town of Bath is located in Beaufort County on the Pamlico River and is home to St. Thomas Episcopal Church. Although the church building was constructed in 1734, the parish has been active for over 300 years. Aside from a few gravestones, it is hard to tell that much has changed around the outside of the church since then. Inside these almost 2-foot-thick walls, the soft light from the uncolored panes of glass reaches across the old wooden pews, and the original rosy-colored tile floors add to the cozy, intimate feel of the church. I can only imagine that this closeness has been highly complementary to the fellowship of St. Thomas over the centuries.
