as i write more bsd verses for charas on my sideblog, i am again reminded of how insane it is that hiro is like one of if not the only mfer associated with the agency to actually go to (and eventually complete) college?? and like a good number of them never even went to high school??? crazy fr. yall are telling me that hiro is gonna be complaining to them about the workload and exams like any normal college student would and literally none of those ppl can relate??

i will be making a psypass verse here btw (: as a robotics prodigy, hiro would fit well into a world with so many drones! my v loose backstory thoughts rn are basically: when tadashi died, hiro's hue was very cloudy (he was on the cusp of resorting to revenge after all!). he ordinarily would have been required to get emergency therapy to prevent it from going past the point of no return, but that ended up being administered by baymax (tadashi's prototype healthcare/therapy robot). it was of course successful, and hiro's hue improved as a result. a few years have passed since then and he's now in the middle of getting his college degree, while still working on baymax and his microbots (basically doing the same thing as in my main verse lol just without the superhero stuff).

            Okay,  so maybe he miscalculated how pissed off these guys would be if he went ahead and scored the whole pot...  But in his defense,  it wasn't his fault that their robots weren't that good !  If they were really planning to bet money on their bots,  they should at least make sure they're up to the task !  Really,  he expected better competition from a so-called  'elite level'  bot fight—–-

            Yanked suddenly out of his thoughts and off his feet,  Hiro squirmed against the unfamiliar arms briefly,  sneakers scraping across the pavement,  until he realized it was futile.  For a few tense moments,  he considered the possibility that he had just gotten into an even worse situation and weighed whether it would be worth the fight if he tried to alert those angry guys to his location to escape,  but before he could decide,  he was let go again.  And being...  scolded ?

            “  Hey,  you're the one who decided to get involved !  ”   came his indignant reply as he whirled around to finally face his rescuer-turned-lecturer.  Any unease or fear he'd previously felt was immediately dispelled by his need to retort.  Seriously,  he already knew he would get an earful from his brother and his aunt later.  He didn't need to hear it from some random guy too.  “  Don't lecture me when you were already spending your night lurking back here too !  And if you saw the fight,  you know I won because my bot was leagues better than anyone else's — it's not my fault they underestimated me and their bots were lame !  ” / @cinderlynx

❝ don’t make a sound . ❞ the blonde barks out a harsh whisper - demand , hardly granting the younger teen any choice but to obey it with his hand pressed tightly over the boy’s mouth after he had roughly yanked him by the arm out of the alley - way &. pulled him into a narrow opening leading into the open streets . moments before a heap of loud , angry footsteps echo throughout the corridor beside them , the gang leader quickly hauled himself &. the tiny excuse of a target behind a large dumpster . his form stiffens against the younger , strong arm held protectively over the kid’s waist to keep him still . it’s only several cautious minutes after the footsteps grow quiet &. distant that his harsh grip on the other eases , although visible tension &. rigidity does not dissipate from hiked shoulders nor a clenched jaw .

thinking about kny hiro. to hone/flex his skills and creative muscles, i think he attempts to make all of the non-standard katana designs (i.e., mitsuri's ribbon-like blade, shinobu's needle-like blade, obanai's wavy blade, etc.) in his free time. one of the things he's very good at in canon is synthesizing and redesigning existing technology, so i think the same thing would apply to his swordmaking. the non-standard designs are definitely a challenge, but that doesn't intimidate him. he does it as an exercise, and has no intention of taking over the jobs of other smiths, but i do think he would get good enough at forging all of those non-standard swords that he COULD fill in for other smiths if needed.

rambling again because it still makes me emo to see how quickly hiro gets into his new project of upgrading baymax. literally minutes before this, he was about to slip back into depression again because he had to explain to baymax that tadashi was dead, but as soon as he gets the idea to upgrade baymax in his head, you can see him start to act like himself again. he's totally in his element when he's programming the chip and modeling the armor parts, rolling back and forth across the garage like he's done 1000 times before. (sidenote: i gotta say that 3D printing all of those pieces would've actually taken WEEKS irl but let's ignore that lol) he's not even thinking about what he's ACTUALLY going to to do when he catches this guy (because he can't even fathom what he'll do at that point right now; he's acting on an impulse), he's just enjoying the process of doing what he loves for the first time since tadashi died. and it's so sweet to see! honestly so glad we as viewers got to be a fly on the wall for that moment because i know aunt cass would've loved to witness that. it's his first step to recovery and healing.

i think that's also why it was so important for him to 'upgrade' his friends too, and a big reason why they went along with it at first. hiro had zero motivation to do anything — he hardly even ate — but now he was finally excited to get back into a project. and let's make no mistake: this was an insanely ambitious project. reimagining the projects that are probably his friends' capstone design projects into new formats (wasabi's laser into contained blades, gogo's bike into essentially modified roller blades that also turn into projectiles, and the entire concept of honey's chemistry set in a purse) takes not only a huge amount of creativity but also requires him to understand each of those projects at a fundamental level in order to apply the technology in new ways. not to mention his own suit, baymax's new scanner upgrade and flight capability and rocket fist, and fred's suit with super jump and flamethrower. of course his friends encouraged this. aunt cass probably did too, though i don't think she totally knew/understood what the intended purpose was until they literally showed up on the news. by throwing himself into this project, he was finally living his life again! honestly if he just wanted to work on random projects like that for a while, i think his friends and family would've been perfectly content with that. he's only 14, there's really no reason for them to push him to go to college asap if that's a step too far right now. even though it was condensed into a montage, i'm sure all of that took MONTHS to do, and while i'm sure hiro still had good days and bad days in that time, he spent most of it happy and motivated, which is a stark contrast to the few months preceding this time.

– this has been true for a while but i just never actually wrote it down. as a soon to be 24 year old woman, i will only write with other people who are at least 18.

– i probably won't follow anyone who posts lots of explicit smut or sexual posts in general, ic (threads, answered asks) or ooc (hcs, musings posts, images, inbox memes), especially if it is untagged/only tagged with some special unique tag. tbh i'm sex repulsed and this is something that has made me silently uncomfortable on my own dash for a long time, but i'm putting my foot down now. unfortunately, this means i will be unfollowing/breaking some mutuals for this. i really do not have a good metric to tell you what crosses my boundary into 'lots' or 'too much' explicit sexual content, and for that i apologize, but i want to reiterate that this is a PERSONAL boundary and about my INDIVIDUAL comfort on my dash.

watched bh6 again today so i am here to ramble. specifically about the credits news articles bc idk if i have ever discussed them in particular all together/at the same time. also keep in mind that idk what goes on in the show and i also don't care bc as soon as they retconned the end of the movie i was done with that shit.

the first headline is 'college genius awarded grant' with a cute pic of hiro. with my own personal hcs, i think this grant is for the microbots which he is redesigning. baymax isn't really his project, and the work was already mostly completed by tadashi. a grant like that would be really important for someone like hiro, who is on a full scholarship, to be able to afford to purchase materials for his project that are not provided by the school. the school most likely just provides what is in the lab already (standard lab chemicals, supplies, and machinery). anything non-standard would need to be bought and acquired by each student on an individual basis out of their own pockets (btw i speak from experience lol as someone who did all that for my degree).

we also have two headlines related to the team: 'big hero 6 saves orphan' with the team behind hiro shaking hands with a firefighter, and 'robot stops runaway cable car' where the robot in question is suited up baymax with suited up hiro also pictured on top of the car. i stand by the fact that nobody knows their identities, and also that they're more like local heroes (think friendly neighborhood spiderman). they help out in the city, and don't really do much beyond that. i also like that these are not like huge supervillain events. their main gigs are probably just things like in the headlines—saving a kid from a burning building or stopping a runaway trolley safely. the team is made up of a bunch of nerdy ass engineers (plus their good friend fred and baymax). being superheroes full time is not what they are envisioning for their future career lol so it makes the most sense for them to be doing things like this, not handling avengers level threats.

and ofc 'tadashi hamada building opening'. i've heard that this was mentioned in the series but as yall know idgaf about how they did it. in my opinion, this is probably the new/rebuilt exhibition hall because normally naming rights go to donors but they have a good reason to make an exception here and name it after the one casualty of the fire at the old exhibition hall, especially because tadashi was a student and the perpetrator of that disaster was one of the faculty members so it's a good pr move. it also probably took a couple years to rebuild something that big, so if hiro is there he's probably an upperclassman now. his other friends probably graduated from undergrad and returned for the ceremony, but they're also possibly still attending sfit as grad students.

            Hiro shook his head,  waving off Rio's apology.  The other boy probably didn't know it,  but his confession was entirely unnecessary.  As soon as Dazai and Ranpo walked in,  that secret was out — at least to the two best detectives at the agency.  Whether or not they would've shared their conclusions with Hiro was another story,  but it made no difference in the end.  Since they had chosen not to intervene or apprehend Rio,  they clearly didn't think he was dangerous enough to get involved.  Hiro wasn't going to question their judgement.

            “  Yeah,  kinda.  But I'm not a full-time employee or anything;  I just help them out sometimes,  ”   he explained,  his voice suddenly taking on a fond tone.  He owed a lot to the agency.  It was thanks to them that he was able to move past his brother's death and start living his life again.   “  They helped solve my brother's murder,  and they give my aunt a ton of business here at the cafe,  so I consult for them when they need 'tech support'.  Most of the time,  I'm just a mechanical engineering student.  ”

❝ i’m sorry about earlier - - - i shouldn’t have confessed any of that to you . . . ❞ cheeks still freshly flush as per accordance to his feelings of embarrassment &. shame , rio’s violet gaze remains fixated guiltily to the floor . ( to expose himself as a fugitive when the fellow teenager never had reason to suspect him - - - a boy who happened to be working with a detective agency the floor above cafe where they met , at that ! seriously , why couldn’t he just keep his mouth shut ?! ) fingertips still numb from the spilt coffee rub together painfully as the boy anxiously rings his hands together . he should be glad that the strange detectives who came down the stairs didn’t decide to detain him for whatever reason , but his disloyal mind instead hyper focuses on the weight of his social blunders from this evening , particularly the ones relating to the boy ( whose name he still did not know ) who had been nothing but cordial to him in the beginning . ❝ uhm , but , do you r - really work with those people . . . ? to solve crimes &. stuff ? ❞ @saiichii

in the spirit of april fools, i think hiro's shenanigans would be less like classic pranking and more like setting up an elaborate rube goldberg machine over the course of several days leading up to april fools. the actual consequences/result would be minimal/pretty much harmless but it's really about the setup and the sneakiness of it all. one of his goals is to keep the contraption undetected for as long as possible, hopefully all the way up until it finally goes off.

simple plots / dynamics for your consideration,  canon edition:

for anyone who isn't sure about where to start with me, i thought i'd write out a few basic plots that could work as a good starting point. all of these can be done using my main, post-canon verse, but there are a few references to some other verses sprinkled in too. as a reminder, hiro is 16 years old and a 3rd year/junior in college by default.

– tutoring.  hiro’s smart !  his expertise is mostly in STEM subjects,  but in verses set in japan,  he is also a good resource for english because it’s his first language.  as a resident nerd,  i also am not afraid of the whole ‘writing a smart character’ thing.  i have a degree in engineering myself, so you can trust that i know what i’m talking about and when i don’t,  research is my friend.  i really love doing threads like this and they will truly never get old. there is also no age limit on this idea; hiro is willing to help anyone, older or younger than him, if he's got the expertise to do so.

– superhero buddies.  if your character is a superhero too,  let’s throw them together !  i am honestly not opposed to writing the rest of the bh6 team as necessary since hiro rarely works alone.  there’s also the opportunity for secret identities where they know each other both as superheroes and civilians but haven’t made the connection that they’re the same people yet !  or post-reveal things where they hang out as civilians too !  lots of possibilities here.

– robot/android/cyborg friends.  if your character is at all mechanical,  you can bet hiro might just force-friend them.  even if they are grumpy, intimidating, or unfriendly in general.  this goes double for any of my powered verses  ( bs/d,  rw/by,  bn/ha, etc. )  because in that case he literally has no fear when it comes to these types of characters and will go right up to them even if they could kill him because not on his watch they can’t.  also,  it still absolutely applies to robots that can’t speak or communicate.  hiro’s love for robots knows no bounds.

– cafe companions.  good for modern verses if your character isn’t in school  ( or even if they are, but they’re either still in high school or aren’t an engineering major and wouldn’t ever reasonably see hiro ).  hiro’s aunt owns a cafe and they live in the apartment unit above it.  he would likely get to know the employees because he’s there all the time and even works there himself sometimes.  your character doesn’t have to work there,  though,  they could also own another nearby establishment that aunt cass might buy ingredients or decorations from ( like a bakery or flower shop ) or just be a regular customer at the cafe that hiro would grow to recognize.

– beta tester.  hiro has plenty of inventions that need testing !  that includes baymax for any doctors and microbots for all sorts of applications  ( he is primarily developing them for disaster relief,  but they can also be used for things like construction )  and lots of side projects.  don’t test me,  i can think of a project for him for almost any industry that might require robots.

with valentines day approaching, i should remind everyone that hiro HATES valentines day lmao. he has a very complicated relationship with the concept of romance, and by that i mean he has hardly been exposed to any positive REAL examples of it. his aunt raised him as a single mother (and i don't believe she ever dated while raising hiro and tadashi), and he doesn't remember his happily married parents. he skipped so many grades in school that his classmates were 4-5 years older than him, so had no friends his own age (hardly any close friends at all) to see date. he hasn't experienced romantic attraction himself either (he's aroace, but may or may not know it depending on his age). so romance, to hiro, has often felt like something that's only for stupid cheesy movies and not for real people in real life. he falls on the romance-repulsed side of aromantic so he has no idea why people celebrate something so stupid and gross and pointless.

he doesn't understand romance at all, and this does cause problems when someone he IS close to does start dating seriously. the fact that romantic love is somehow DIFFERENT than the love HE experiences (and often is held in higher regard than friendship/platonic/familial love) makes him very insecure. he will act very bratty toward his friends' first new romantic partners because he feels like he's being downgraded, like his friend will no longer care as much about him as they did before they started dating this new person. that person is coming in and taking his friend way from him. obviously this is generally untrue, but he is just a teenager and this is new and uncomfortable for him. no one has ever explained it to him before. (i should also note that he would not get this way if he became friends with someone who already had a romantic partner when he met them because in that case, he already knows where he stands.) this is one reason he'll especially hate valentines day if he has friends in romantic relationships because they will most likely spend the day with their partners, and hiro doesn't have a partner (by choice of course! but it does mean he's left all alone).

of course, the best way to handle hiro being a brat in this instance is to show him that he still matters. explain to him that nothing has to change, and nothing WILL change. maintain an individual relationship with him, and make sure to hang out with him sometimes without your partner tagging along. he can (and i think does) learn to be more neutral about romance if someone takes the time to explain that he's still just as important as before, romantic relationships are different but not inherently superior, and he won't be forgotten or left out just because someone's in a romantic relationship.

hiro doesn't remember his parents. not really. he was only 3 when they died, so any memories he has are fuzzy at best. aunt cass is the only parent he's ever really known. tbh i think his relationship with her is really closer to mother/son than aunt/nephew, and the main reason he has always called her aunt cass is because that's what tadashi called her. tadashi was older when their parents died (probably around 9) so it's understandable that he continued to see aunt cass as his aunt despite being raised by her since then.

he obviously still calls her aunt cass even after tadashi dies, though. that's just how he refers to her and there's no reason to change it even though he does see her as his mother figure.

additional notes:   i love my many crossovers and try to make them so that hiro fits as seamlessly into the source material as possible,  but please,  please plot with me !!  i only ever  “wing it”  with people i’ve extensively plotted with before.  i need to know our characters’ relationship at minimum before going into a thread or sending/answering inbox memes.  i don’t even like starter calls until i’m sure we’ve ironed out the details regarding how our characters know each other.
