Sailor Moon Trivia #3
In astrology, every zodiac sign is linked to a specific heavenly body. And every Sailor Senshi is the sign that's associated with her planet! Like, Usagi is a Cancer, and this sign is linked to the moon. Here are all of them:
Moon - Cancer
Mercury - Virgo and Gemini (Ami is a Virgo)
Mars - Aries
Jupiter - Sagittarius
Venus - Libra and Taurus (Minako is Libra)
Uranus - Aquarius
Neptune - Pisces
Pluto - Scorpio
Saturn - Capricorn
The only exception is Mamoru. Since there's no zodiac sign for Earth, they went with Leo, which is associated with the sun. After all, it is said in the manga that Mamoru is the prince of the Earth protected by the sun.
Taurus is the only star sign that is not represented in the series, as Gemini is covered by Taiki.
You could even argue that the Senshi have some of the personality traits typically associated with their zodiac signs. Wether you believe in it or not, Naoko Takeuchi definitely was inspired by astrology.
But Japan also kinda has a similar concept to this that's rather unknown in he West: The blood type personality theory. Many people believe that every blood type is linked to specific characteristics. And I think this can be seen in Sailor Moon as well. What do you think?
A: Ami, Setsuna, Mamoru (friendly, organized, sensitive)
B: Minako, Haruka (outgoing, honest, bubbly, creative)
AB: Rei, Hotaru (unpredictable, curious, eccentric)
0: Usagi, Chibiusa, Makoto, Michiru (optimistic, confident, good leaders)

Sailor Moon Trivia #2
Most Sailor Moon villains are named after minerals. The reason might be that the manga creator Naoko Takeuchi studied chemistry in university. She also was part of the astronomy club, which explains her knowledge about planets and space.
Here are the name origins for most villains:
Dark Kingdom: Beryl, jadeite, nephrite, zoisite and kunzite are all minerals. Metalia probably derives from "metal". The term "Shitennou" means "four heavenly kings" and is also used for a group of Buddhist gods.
Ail and An: It's a pun. Their combined namens sound a bit like "alien".
Black Moon Clan: The Ayakashi Sisters are named after minerals: kermesite (Koan), berthierite (Berthier), calaverite (Calaveras) and petzite (Petz). Ayakashi refers to a type of supernatural monster/phantom or can mean "suspicious". Rubeus refers to ruby (his name means "red" in Latin, and the word "ruby" derives from that), Esmeraude is an obsolete French word for emerald, Saphir could be the French/German word for sapphire, and Demande probably refers to a diamond. It may also be a pun with the English word "demand". Chiral is a term from chemistry, describing an object that cannot be superimposed on its mirror image. Achiral is the opposite.
Death Busters: Who would've thought, the Witches 5 and Kaolinite are also named after minerals: kaolinite, eudialyte (Eudial), mimetite (Mimete), tellurite (Tellu), viluite (Viluy), cyprine and ptilolite (Ptilol).
Dead Moon Circus: The Amazon Trio are not only named after the animals they represent, their names also refer to minerals. There's also an "amazonite". The Amazoness Quartet are named after celestial bodies (Pallas, Juno & Vesta are asteroids, Ceres is a dwarf planet). These are named after Greek goddesses. Zirconia is named after a mineral (zircon). Nehellenia might be named after the Frisian-Roman goddess Nehalennia. Xenotime and Zeolite are minerals.
Shadow Galactica: The Sailor Animanates are each named after a type of metal and an animal: Iron Mouse, Aluminum Seiren (sirenia is another term for sea cows, but it might also refer to sirens from Greek mythology), Lead Crow, Tin Nyanko (nyanko means something like "kitty cat"), Heavy Metal Papillon (papillon is French for butterfly). Lethe and Mnemosyne refer to rivers in the Greek underworld, representing oblivion and memories. Phi and Chi are letters of the Greek alphabet. In the musicals they're also joined by Theta.
R Movie: Fiore is Italian for flower. Xenian might refer to the biological term Xenia, which is the effect of pollen on seeds and fruit of the fertilized plant.
S Movie: Princess Kaguya is a character from a famous Japanese tale about a princess who came from the moon.
SuperS Movie: The villains have French names associated with sweets. Badiane means star anise, banane is a banana obviously, orangeât is candied orange peel and poupelin is a kind of pastry. Perle means pearl (he's not a villain but was originally part of the group too.)

Sailor Moon Trivia #1
The names of the Sailor Guardians all have fitting meanings. Usagi Tsukino, or Tsukino Usagi in the original order, means "moon rabbit". This is a reference to a well-known Japanese legend according to which there's a rabbit on the moon. Here's what the names of the other Guardians mean:
Ami Mizuno: Asian beauty of water or second beauty of water
Rei Hino: Beauty/elegance/spirit of fire
Makoto Kino: Honesty of the tree
Minako Aino: Beautiful child of love
Haruka Tenou: Distant sky king
Michiru Kaiou: Rising sea king
Setsuna Meiou: Dark king of the moment
Hotaru Tomoe: Firefly sprouting from the earth
Mamoru Chiba: Protector of the Earth
Please note that the meaning is not always clear, especially in Japanese, so these are only some possible translations.
But that's not all. Their surnames also contain characters of their respective planets! Mars, for example, is called "Kasei" in Japanese, which literally means "fire star". And the character for "fire" is also in "Hino", Rei's surname. The only difference is that it's not pronounced "ka" but "hi".
Hino Rei: 火野レイ
Mars: 火星
This is also how it works with Mercury and Jupiter. It's even clearer with Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. For example: Neptune is called "Kaiousei", for example", and Michiru's surname is Kaiou. It's different with Sailor Venus though, probably because Minako was the first Senshi to be created. However, the name Minako can also be read as "Binasu" using an outdated pronunciation, which is the Japanese transcription of the word "Venus".

Random Sailor Moon Trivia:
The fictional “Aurora ♥ Wedding” manga created by Marie Buraidaru in the Codename: Sailor V manga was very clearly a reference to the Sailor Moon series - just compare the panel of  “Aurora ♥ Wedding” on the left to the image from the third artbook on the right, for one example.

Naoko Takeuchi based the three talismans of Sailor Uranus, Sailor Neptune, and Sailor Pluto (the Space Sword, Deep Aqua Mirror, and Garnet Orb, respectively) on the three symbols associated with Amaterasu and the royalty of Japan: the sword, mirror, and jewel.

Random Sailor Moon Trivia:
In episode 39 of the original anime, when Tuxedo Mask asked Sailor Moon to jump, she did a clockwise quadruple axel, a jump which has as yet never been done by any woman in competition - indicating that Princess Serenity was indeed a gifted skater in the Silver Millennium.
