this seems to have turned into some kind of review

superpose is maybe one of my favorite webcomics out there right now.  (mind the content warnings on the site, though!  nothing for shock value, all written with care and authenticity, but worth noting.)

I started reading it quite a long time ago, but I’m just saying this now because like wine and some cheeses, SP only gets better with time.  it’s unlike anything else I’ve ever read (possibly because sci-fi isn’t my wheelhouse, but idk).

1. whoa, story!

it’s great on the first read-through, but with each subsequent pass, there’s more to pick up on.  you’re rewarded by understanding more about the themes, the characters, the narrative.  it’s dense, but not in a dry, boring, or overwhelming way.  the text never takes over the page compositions, even in paragraphs or long speeches; it’s just packed with information and nuance.  you can consume and understand it without picking up on every detail, and then come back around to keep gleaning more.  

it’s immaculately researched and incredibly smart.  each character feels truly whole and real, which translates into (or facilitates??) dialogue that feels just as natural.  there’s grit and darkness and angst, but also pure, natural comedy, joyful snapshots of life-long friendships, and burgeoning affection that, dare I say it, gives me the dokis.

it’s one of those comics that I can tell was written by people way smarter than me, but it explores science and abstract concepts without making me feel like I’m being left behind (even if I don’t always understand them).  and my character-driven heart is always satisfied by the drama and feelings.

2. hot damn, art!

the art, like the characters, is detailed in a way that makes the setting feel truly tangible.  the rendering powerfully evokes the desired “198X” aesthetic (I mean damn, look at the UI on the site, even!), while also skillfully conveying mood and tone.  the style is a unique blend of colorful exaggeration and verisimilitude, and I love it.  the lighting effects alone are cool as hell!

3. last but not least
