Saioumota Week 2019 Day #2: Long Distances

Title: When a Dream Dies

Description: Kaito returns home early from a six month space mission after a freak accident that leaves his arm broken, but worst of all, and dream completely destroyed.

Word count: 1,472

Coming back to earth was surreal.

While Kaito had mentally prepared for it after he was… discharged, to put it lightly, it was still surreal to feel the pull of gravity drag down his hair, his clothes, everything. If not for the mandatory exercises that had to be done while in the station, Kaito was sure his body and muscles would be intensely suffering from the change.

He was disorientated, to say the least.

Careful to cradle his broken arm, Kaito rubbed the back of his neck after stepping foot off of the plane. First it was the spacecraft getting him to the earth, then a helicopter to the airport, and then an airplane back to the city… He never thought it would ever happen, but a large part of him was glad to have his feet on the ground for more than a few minutes.

Aside from that, there were two other reasons why he was glad to be home.

I actually combined the prompts and decided to do a piece on weaknesses that plague all three of them and how they act throughout the game, be it insecurities they started with, illness that progressed, or injuries from revealing an inconvenient truth. Saioumota Week 2019 Day #1: Soulmates AU

Title: All That is Left

Description: Kokichi is afraid of fate and runs away from it… until he realizes that it’s all he has left.

Kokichi noticed it when Kaito’s fist made contact with Shuichi’s face.

The way all three of them reacted, the way that his cheek suddenly stung like it had been him that Kaito had punched instead, it was a dead giveaway. It was so sudden and unexpected that he yelped quietly, but the commotion of the scene in front of him distracted everyone from it. As he rubbed his cheek, he saw Shuichi on the ground, eyes wide and tears flowing down his face in the wake of Kaede’s demise. Kaito hadn’t initially reacted, too emotional and full of grief that manifested into anger, and thus Kokichi only assumed that the connection was only between him and Shuichi.

That assumption changed when he snuck a glance at Kaito retreating into his room, rubbing the exact same spot on his cheek.

Kokichi didn’t know how to feel about it.

Passengers on the Road to Nowhere

Saioumota Week 2019 - Day 2: Road Trip & Long Distances

Description: Kaito, Shuichi and Kokichi pile into an old car and drive away from their troubles. Word Count: 2189

The sun beat down on the bill of Shuichi’s cap as he leaned against the window, watching the signs flash by. The map was loosely grasped in his hands until they got closer to their next exit. He crumpled it a bit, tightening his hand, then letting it go again, staring at the tiny creases, like new markings on the face of the region. Maybe making somewhere new, just like they were hoping to find. His half lidded eyes drift to the driver’s seat, where Kaito sits at the wheel. His overly large sunglasses and gel free hair made almost look like a stranger, but the big grin on his face despite everything and his hand tapping along to the song playing through the crusty speakers gave him away.

Shuichi shifted his shoulders with a wince, and turned to glance into the backseat. Sprawled across the entirety of it was Kokichi, seemingly asleep. The hoodie he had been wearing was pulled off and thrown over his face to blot out the sun. He hadn’t said much since the argument about seatbelts, and the middle one was still awkwardly clipped around his waist, even sideways. A bump in the road bounced him up, and Shuichi heard a groan under the fabric.

He turned back to the map, and then out the window. A rest stop was coming up. His tired eyes widened a little.
