Yuzuru Hanyu, “This is pretty difficult. But I’m really happy I’m able to skate with all my strength in front of everyone like this. […] So, now at the very end, please watch my Seimei that I put my every effort into with steps and spins. Here I go! Are you ready?” (Continues with Wings, 04.15.18)

Yuzuru Hanyu | 2018.3.28 Post-Olympic Press Conference at Japan National Press Club
Translated and subbed by gladi and tadaki. Please don’t reupload.
youtube
“If ‘Yuzuru Hanyu’ were to challenge 4.5 or 5 revolutions… I will definitely make them a part of my expression… Because that is my style” (14:00)
One of the most enjoyable interviews I’ve ever watched – Yuzu’s brilliance and quick wit were on full display during this 50-minute press conference, his fifth media outing that day. I’m 100% in agreement with the gushing report from JNPC of the event, translation included below. Apologies for the tardiness and the video quality, Youtube/Asahi blocked all other versions and we’ve tried 10, 20 of them. It’s worth the wait though, the press conference was just THAT GOOD. As always, much love + respect to @tadakixd , thanks for working together with me :3 – gladi

Perfection! Our hats off to a complete lack of weaknesses https://www.jnpc.or.jp/archive/conferences/35057/report
It was a great press conference. I’ve been part of the planning committee for 8 years, dealing with sports-related press conferences at the club, but never have I seen as perfect a speaker. Taking a mix of brilliant and some not-so-brilliant questions in stride, he shone like a diamond – his answers brimming with confidence and ready wit.
According to staff of the secretariat overlooking the venue from above, the full house of reporters and club members hung onto Hanyu’s every word, nodding their heads in unison. His performance on ice draws the audiences from the stands into his own world. It was the same here.

Yuzuru Hanyu is a living legend in the figure skating world. He's broken world record after world record, winning back-to-back singles gold medals at consecutive Olympics (only the second male skater to do this). And that last gold medal at the 2018 Winter Games? He won it on an injured ankle. Hanyu's next big feat will be landing the intimidating quadruple axel, a jump that has never been landed in competition.

To the Japanese, Hanyu may not be GNC
A week or so back @shomouno posted this answer to a question about whether Hanyu Yuzuru was gender non-conforming. I thought it was a great question, and also a great answer, one that acknowledges that from a primarily Western point of view, Hanyu, his costumes, his programs and such, would definitely be considered gnc.
And it got me thinking – what would the Japanese point of view be? While I’m not a Hanyu fan, and neither am I Japanese (if it matters, I’m Chinese), I live in South Hokkaido, which is 2 hours from Hanyu’s hometown Sendai. Hanyu is an obsession in this area. He is constantly featured on shows, newspapers, and every single competition of his is discussed in detail not only in media but in the workplaces and schools. I may have missed something due to inattention, but I’ve never heard anyone call him too girly. I have heard people accuse him of ‘acting cute’ despite being an adult (a complaint I’ve never heard thrown at models in their 30s who make duck faces and speak in a child-like voice, ahem), but that has more to do with societal expectations of age-appropriateness, not gender. Also, it didn’t strike me that Hanyu himself was motivated by a desire to challenge gender norms in his program choices.
I had an inkling in my mind, but this post ignited enough interest within me to want to read up more  and join the discussion when I felt a little more informed. I’d done much research in school regarding gender in Japan, but it was mostly on the representation of women in the media, so I definitely needed to study more before I posted anything. I am still no where near an expert on this subject, but I’d like to present what I’ve learnt within this short week of reading up on the topic of gender norms in Japan. If there is anything that I say that anyone would like to add on to/dispute/etc, please feel free!
So, that being said here’s what I concluded after my readings.
I found that it is not so much that the signifiers of ‘femininity’ (graceful curves, ruffled tops) differ greatly between Japan and say, America, but rather that ‘femininity’ in Japan traditionally has more positive connotations such as courtliness, harmony and culture. I also found that in Japan, ‘femininity’ in the realm of the arts, especially high art – belongs to men. As such, from the perspective of the Japanese, because Hanyu is both an athlete and an artist, his programs will most likely not be seen as gender non-conforming. In fact by performing femininity, Hanyu as a person will be seen not so much as ‘feminine’ as in more like a woman and/or less like a man, but ‘feminine’ as in a man, but one who is more professional, refined and cultured.

The tweet links to a photo of one of the pages in which Yuzu gives thanks to all his coaches, and it was just so sweet I had to share.
Actually, besides the ‘Gold Medal’, I had another dream for the [Sochi] Olympics. When I was young, I watched the Olympics and the scene of an athlete who expressed, at length, his gratitude for his coach really left a strong impression on me. After I saw that I thought “In this place (the interview area) I will say the names of all the coaches who have taught me!”.  And so after that, almost every night I ran simulations and in that way, spent many sleepless nights. I still do that now. (Laughs). In reality, I was not able to say it, and so that [dream] did not come true, so please allow me to borrow this platform to say it.  Mami-sensei, Tsuzuki- sensei, Matsuda-sensei, Seki-sensei, Nanami-sensei, Natasha-sensei, Igor-sensei, Nagakubo-sensei, Brian, Tracy, Ghislain, David, Jeff, Shae, Stephane, Plu-san.
For bringing up someone like me, really, thank you very much!
Of course, that very last line was written in polite speech.
Also…
Sensei means teacher (and in this case, Coach). It’s interesting that Natasha and Igor are the only non-japanese coaches to be called sensei, whilst everyone else is just called by their names. Except of course, Plushy. hahaha Plushy gets a -san (this is usually translated as ‘Mr’, but in no way is ‘Plu-san’ a formal way of address; keep in mind that Pooh is also translated as Pooh-san lol)
Also interesting - the two female Japanese coaches, Yamada Mami and Abe Nanami, are called by their first names, whereas all the other Japanese coaches are males and are called by their surnames. (Not reading anything into this, just noting haha)
