but why is reposting BAD?

i thought i’d make an faq filled with every excuse in the book about reposting, for those who still don’t understand why it��s bad…or for people who don’t know what to say in retaliation to these! so here we go. 

first of all, an artist doesn’t even NEED to explain themselves. in the same way with someone who says “dude, make sure that soda is diet” or “please don’t tickle me”. they don’t want you to do it. you don’t need to test them by ignoring them. the reason doesn’t matter: it’s the person’s wish with THEIR things. if you had any respect for others, you’d just take it at that. 

BUT for some people, they don’t want to respect others at face value, and want their reason. (which, i might add, is rude.) so let’s get into that: 

but i’m giving you exposure! isn’t that good?

no. 

you’re not giving artists exposure. for people like myself, freelance artists, you’re hurting us. about a year ago, i sent my portfolio off to an indie game. in it, i had a piece of work that had been reposted (that i didn’t even know about). i was told much later that they “looked into it” and saw that my work was posted by someone else, which means now they have no idea who the artist was, and THEREFORE can’t be sure my work was legit. i lost a potential job to a repost. 

doesn’t matter if you say “i didn’t draw this”. sometimes, they don’t even look. they just look to see if it’s on any site other than your own. and that’s terrifying for artists. so don’t endanger our livelihood for instagram likes. 

besides, you’re not even giving exposure if you didn’t credit, cropped out the signature, or somehow made the resolution so low to where you can’t even see the signature. which brings me to…

but i credited you!

some people still don’t want it reposted even with credit. the last answer should show you one of the many reasons why.

and it’s MY art you posted. you can’t take something i did and do whatever you want with it. imagine if you took someones drawing, photocopied it, and spread it all around the town without their permission. they’d have every right to be angry, right?

but you posted it online, which means anyone can do anything with it. so if you don’t want it reposted, don’t post it online!

i have to post my art onto my websites to build a fanbase, something crucial to an artist. it shouldn’t be on ME to not post it in the first place, it should be on YOU to not repost it. you’re just echoing victim-blaming arguments. 

you’re basically saying “if you don’t want to be bullied, don’t exist.” which is a terrible thing to teach people, rather than “be nice and respectful towards others.” yes, i know our world isn’t perfect. but that’s no excuse to contribute to vile things. 

well i would be honored if someone reposted my art. and my friend doesn’t mind reposts, so why should you?

good for you! good for them! but did you know there’s more people in the world other than just you and your friend? we have wishes and feelings too, so you don’t get to project your own emotions onto what WE should be feeling as well. i love peaches. some people don’t like them. that doesn’t mean that now they have to eat peaches because i don’t mind them. 

what an artist creates automatically belongs to society, though. 

go steal the mona lisa and tell me how that works out. 

everyone can VIEW it, yes. artists want others to view their work! we just don’t want you to do stuff with it we asked you not to do. 

WELL THEN SPEAKING OF THAT, since i can’t put your work on redbubble and sell it for myself, why do you have an umbrella of the starry night?? huh?? you STOLE van gogh’s work! (yes people have legit said this to me) 

putting my work on items and selling it is totally illegal. van gogh’s work is owned by companies now, who have authorization to print it on things. and i’m just ONE freelance artist who is, you know, still alive and not giving permission to do that. you can’t compare a dead artist from the 1800s to a digital artist in 2017. apples to oranges, my dude.

well i SAID “credit to the artist” so i DID give you credit!

because saying “the artist” really tells people who i am and lets them visit my websites! thank you so much! 

but all sarcasm aside, that doesn’t do anything other than show you were too lazy to find the artist. same thing with “source: the internet” and “who drew this xD” or misspelling my url on purpose or putting the credit under a cut. OR cropping the image to cut off my signature! you didn’t give me credit. 

it wasn’t on the website i wanted it on! you should have more social media.

i’ll have the social media i want to have. not up to me to make more accounts on more things just so you won’t disrespect me. 

but i don’t remember where i got it. besides, i reposted SOOO much work and saved it all a long time ago. how can i find it now?

also, if you didn’t know the artist, that’s a HUGE reason not to repost it in the first place!! you didn’t even know if it was okay since you never got to see their position on that!!

take down your video with stolen fan art. take down your entire fan art twitter account. i don’t care “how hard it was to save those images” or “how many views you have now”. you got all that attention from someone else’s hard work. searching for art will never be as hard as making it. if it were that easy, you’d be drawing all the art yourself. 

but i asked the artist and they didn’t say anything! i assumed it was okay. 

yeah, i feel you. it’s the same thing as when you ask your mom if you can borrow some money, she doesn’t answer, so you just steal it from her purse. no answer means the answer you want to hear, right?

wrong. don’t take “unresponsive” as a yes. that’s disgusting. 

well i honestly don’t care. artists are just selfish. i’ll repost their art if i want to, just to show them how much i hate their stance on reposting. and (insert another really edgy statement here from someone who only says things to get a rise out of people since their life is empty) 

one day you’re gonna come across an artist who has no chill and wants to sue, and can actually do it, since some people put their work under HEAVY copyright. and i’m gonna kick back in my chair with a nice capri sun and watch it all happen, since you have that kind of attitude towards people. 

yes, this whole thing seems a bit. well. “salty”, as some would put it. and i have every right to be irritated over this. all these questions are asking “WHY should i respect their wishes? give me a reason” or “but here is my excuse rather than just taking it down”. time after time, artists are villainized just for telling people not to repost. 

like i said, the artist not wanting you to repost it SHOULD be reason enough! we’re so tired of having to fight people just to have respect for our art. we have to deal with tracing constantly, so can you please take reposting off our plates? i know bad things will always happen, but that’s no reason to make it worse by contributing. 

artists are generously putting our art out there for free. if you want to keep seeing our art for free (btw we don’t HAVE to, all the big artists could just up and leave and go to patreon), maybe show us some respect? because we get pretty dejected when we see strangers getting attention from something we did, and it makes us want to remove everything we show you guys. you say “don’t post it then!” but would be mad if all fan art disappeared. 

if you want to keep the art, respect the artist making it. there’s a real person behind that drawing.

Honestly I can see Shinichi and Kazuha getting along, especially in topics of Heiji and even Ran.I think it's like you said because of her relation to Heiji that I think that's where the -chan comes in where she's related to his best friend but not quite as close as Sonoko/Ran. I headcanon that he'll call Aoko Aoko-chan if he becomes friends with Kaito :) (while Kaito is totally getting Kuroba treatment) Also Kaito is the same as Shinichi where he uses ‘ore’ normally to himself and peers but ‘boku’ for politeness towards authorities/social situations (he addresses himself as ‘boku’ to Nakamori-keibu for example because he truly respects Nakamori-keibu and uses formal language when conversing with him). 

As Kaito Kid, it’s a little bit special. Because he’s acting as a gentleman thief and presenting himself as an older figure, he uses ‘watashi’. This form of address is being used as polite, suave, charming, just like a typical gentleman but also has a slight tone of arrogance embedded into it as he almost looks down on others. Which is exactly the kind of role that Kaito wants to portray to his audience and the force as Kaito Kid. It could also be that he’s emulating his father who uses ‘watashi’ whether as Kid or himself as a magician which adding on that he could be using Toichi as a mold to his Kid persona. Kid is an homage to Toichi after all.

As a side note, Kaito (Kid) uses ‘ore’ when conversing with Conan and likewise with Conan to Kaito because they address and speak very casually with each other.

I was today’s years as old when I realized Shinichi (as Conan) calls Kazuha, ‘Kazuha-chan’.

So there’s Ran and Sonoko who he calls only by their first name, further cementing childhood friend status. I think besides Ran, Sonoko is the only girl he addresses on a first-name basis (which Sonoko pays in kind by calling him ‘Shinichi-kun’).

Then his usual mode of address for girls who are his peers is just by their last name. See: ‘Haibara’ and ‘Sera’.

I can’t recall if he addressed Asami (his alleged first love, but we all know the truth by now) by first name with senpai, or last name with senpai, or just senpai.

Then there’s the rest where befitting a polite boy like him he addresses with ‘-san’. 

(Speaking of, his personal pronoun is ‘ore’ normally, but he uses ‘boku’, not necessarily depending on whether or not he’s Conan or Shinichi but when he’s talking to the authorities or in general social situations. He uses ‘ore’ as Conan for those who know him to be Shinichi. What I’m trying to get at is he has pretty good manners, in contrast to Heiji who uses ‘ore’ all the time. I get the impression that Kaito does that too, while I’m not sure if he uses ‘boku’ as Kaitou Kid, while Hakuba uses ‘boku’ all the time.)

Anyway, going back, where does ‘Kazuha-chan’ come from? All possibilities are cute. Either he picked up Ran’s mode of address for her, or to make it easier since he calls her as ‘Kazuha nee-chan’, like ‘Ran nee-chan’ normally. But I noticed he only every uses ‘chan’ for really young girls see: ‘Ayumi-chan’.

I guess what I’m getting at is it’s cute that he doesn’t address Kazuha as he does with his classmates and peers (his real age peers I mean), but he isn’t so distant because Kazuha, after all, is the girl his best friend, Hattori loves. As an aside, I also love how genuinely supportive he is of them, troll faces aside. Not just them, but for other couples in the series too. One thing I can pick up from reading the manga, is that Shinichi takes shipping and his OTPs seriously. He’s pretty romantic like that. And let’s be serious, he and Ran (add in Sonoko matchmaker extraordinaire) ship as a bonding activity.

So what I’m getting at is if ever a situation like Crossroads in the Ancient Capital comes up again, there better be none of this ‘Toyama-san’ business. 

tldr: Shinichi calls Kazuha, ‘Kazuha-chan’, and I think that’s cute, and his friendship with Heiji continues to be precious.

MK1412 Ep 10

Wow seeing Conan from Kaito’s perspective made me realize what a weird kid Conan is from an outsider’s perspective. In DC we always get to hear his inner monologue as he works through a case. Now that we can’t hear his inner thoughts, all we can see is Conan making the most intense faces while looking at the floor. Once in a while, he’d all of a sudden turn around and run full speed at something and then proceeds to stare it down. I swear in this episode Conan was having a staring contest with the sky and he was winning.

I feel so bad for MK for being thrown under the bus and into flames because of "business reasons". It sucks that such a popular character in a popular franchise can't get as much substance as he deserves (along with his cast) bc of $$. 

A wish I have is for Gosho writing the in-between of MK chaps because character development feels all over the place because of the long hiatuses this manga has. His later chapters does have great concept/potential but it's so rushed and self-contained that it feels meaningless.. So much could be told in between with development if only he's allowed to write it :( 

I would like just one (1) indication that anyone in MK who has suspected/knows Kaito is Kid considers the current Kid a successor. All we got is the dismissal from Nakamori that Kid can’t be a teenager because he’s been chasing the thief since his 20s. You can be a little dismissive of the actual suspicion chapter with Aoko and Nakamori, since that was gag manga days, but Hakuba? Sun Halo Aoko? Akako?

With the series so hyper-focused on Kaito nowadays, we don’t know if anyone has thought about the situation with Kid at all. The gag manga days gave us more insight into the character’s personalities when they focused on people outside of Kaito. We had a much better suspicion story in one chapter than Sun Halo ever could achieve in three. Gosho can’t seem to write anything for MK that’s not flashy eye-candy, teases at interesting stories, and mostly useless cameos from the other characters at this point. 

Pretty art can’t replace the substance that MK used to have. And it did have substance, even when it was blatantly silly and episodic. Better than still being episodic and trying to pretend cases are more important when they really aren’t. ‘Shocking’ stories really are meaningless when no continuity exists in MK. 

Aoko being suspicious and seeing Kid up close? Already written off by the end of the chapters, never even mentioned the fact that Kaito’s been suspected of being Kid before.

Corbeau possibly implicating that Toichi is alive? Or that Chikage made a suggestion that Kaito could stop being Kid and start an actual career? Forgotten, subject dropped, it’ll be a miracle if either are mentioned in any important way again.

Everyone Kaito has dropped hints about his identity to? One off characters, never to be seen again.

I like MK, and terrible writing isn’t likely to make me hate the series. But even before Corbeau was introduced, I always said that the appeal of MK is in it’s potential. The idea for the plot is good, even if the execution with the actual danger makes it unbelievably weak. The concepts in chapters aren’t used to their full potential, but are fun and leave a lot to play around with. Every character outside of Kaito is shafted to make the main star look good, but there’s a backbone to all of them that makes everyone stand out and can appeal to people. Gosho just doesn’t know what to do with MK anymore when he gets a very limited timeframe to write for it, when he gets to write at all. 

And quite frankly I don’t blame him for bad writing as much as I blame the people who decided that he should only get to write it every three years because it doesn’t sell as well as Conan. If Gosho only gets one chance every three years, of course he’s going to try a big plot he can’t actually commit to. And, wow, it’s so weird that MK volume sales aren’t as good as DC’s, and issues with just MK from Gosho don’t sell quite as well as DC, or whatever the problem is with how ‘well it sells’. It’s almost like it’s really hard to gain any new fans when you only let the series update on a highly irregular schedule. ‘We barely allow you to do the series, and to be honest we’d like to to stop pushing it altogether because we only want that Conan money, but you’ve made Kid so gd popular with crossover that we guess you can write some new material to help promote Kid-related media’.

…I’d say I wish he could get MK serialized in Shonen Sunday Super, instead of opting to sometimes replace DC in Weekly Shonen Sunday, but I know the current frequency of breaks is because no one wants Gosho to push his health too far. And even a monthly serialization would be work that’d go against the idea of taking things slower. But some consistency to MK serialization I think would help fix some of the problems I have with the current writing. Gosho might could actually do a long term side plot to more satisfying conclusions if he knew he could continuously write for MK. He might could spare more time to have chapters where he can focus on other side characters if he could see time for breathing room.

But unfortunately, the business side of manga doesn’t get my hopes up for good MK writing in the future.
