Kanji goals for 2021

お久しぶりです

I haven’t used this platform in a while.  My goal is to master all 2136 joujou kanji this year. To be even more specific, before summer. 

My goal is to do 30 new characters a day whilst also reviewing others. I want to handwrite to improve my handwriting skills, both speed and readability.

I supplement this by doing quizes with handwriting input on renshuu.org. 

My other Japanese goal for this year is to write a paper in Japanese and to finish reading a novel. Aside from that I want to become able to read research papers in Japanese and get used to listening to Japanese lectures. Wish me luck ♡

Japanese learning resources

This is mainly a list of learning resources I found useful and helped me learn Japanese, or could have helped me if I was willing to use it.

Free

- renshuu.org  - My go-to-site for about everything. It has a decent dictionary from where you can add vocabulary and kanji directly to your study schedule, which is actually the awesome part. The community isn’t overly active but very friendly. When you have questions regarding the website or the language you are sure to get a reply in a couple of days. I also think it is a plus that there is nearly no romaji around, but that does mean that before being able to use it’s full potential it would be wise to learn hiragana and katakana. If you upgrade to renshuu pro (which is a paid service) you can also make use of grammar quizzing.

- lang-8.com  - A site where you can get the things you write in the language you study looked at by native speakers. That means it isn’t only meant for Japanese. People also like it if you correct posts written in your native language. Just note that corrections are only reliable to a certain degree, either because of misunderstandings of what you wanted to write or that most of the native speakers on there also sometimes make mistakes in their own language.

- jisho.org  - A very convenient Japanese dictionary which also allows you to copy whole sentences and even more in the search field. Searching for kanji characters can either by writing them with your mouse or looking at the radicals

- lingq.com  - A site with a lot of possibilities to listen to Japanese. The site is annoyingly pressuring in wanting the users to go premium, however you can listen to the courses (and as far as I know also download audio files with their written texts) with only making a free account.

- japan-guide.com - An online message board where a lot of Japanese people try to meet with foreigners. Especially useful if you don’t live in Japan and are looking for Japanese people to talk to. Be careful though, some of the people on there are quite weird. If you post your request for a language learning friend chances are big that you get a reply from someone who speaks barely any foreign language. 

- guidetojapanese.org  - This site has a really detailed explanation of the Japanese language and systematically moves through all grammar points. It is filled with examples and shows them including the common kanji. At the start of each lesson is a list with the used vocabulary.

- imabi.net - A very detailed site which has a structure like a textbook. It covers everything from the pronunciation and how to write hiragana and katakana up to old Japanese. 

- nihongonomori.com / https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVx6RFaEAg46xfAsD2zz16w - This is both a site and a youtube channel where some people explain Japanese in Japanese. That makes that it becomes both listening practice as well as an useful tool to learn grammar.

Paid

- books  - I usually don’t pay for my learning materials since I don’t have a lot of money but I did buy the unicom N2 文のルール book in preperation for the JLPT N2

There are a lot of book series out there like Genki and such. I once worked from a book called Japanese language and people but as it was written completely in romaji with no urgency to teach hiragana nor katakana it felt as a strain on my studies.

I am probably still missing a lot so expect me to elaborate on this post

Japanese:

I feel like I am on a plain. My Japanese learning doesn’t seem to be progressing as fast as it used to, however I still keep up my studying. I have been blasting through my daily vocabulary which is around the 300 words each day.

Writing

I have written some letters in Japanese to some friends and didn’t really keep up with my daily writing goals so I couldn’t be bothered to actually show it here.

I also quit kanji koohii because I found the English meanings off putting and I don’t expect to ever have to use the English meanings when using kanji in real life. Instead I made a flashcard deck using Anki (http://ankisrs.net/), where I have characters mixed with both their meaning as well as in example sentences (which I add myself).

I have been keeping up with practicing French everyday resulting in a 25 day streak and finishing the French 1 course on Memrise. So there is nothing left to do but to continue on to French 2.

Learning french is actually a nice change from learning Japanese all the time and frustrating in itself because I (of course) still have trouble making sentences.

Study schedule

Since I have been planning to make this a study blog I should start studying and posting. This is just my way to stay motivated so by no means interesting for anyone else. 

I am planning to take the N2 level JLPT in December, so that is my main goal. On the side I am also starting to study French again, since French animation is awesome. My current goal for French is to be able to make basic sentences by the time it is Christmas.

The how-I’m-gonna-get-there:

Japanese: 

- study vocabulary every day (I have been doing that for over 2 years now using renshuu.org so that should be fine)

- do a daily dose of sentence writing based on grammar terms and post it on lang-8.com

- review the corrections I get there once a week

- write kanji everyday using the flashcards at kanji.koohii.com

- listen or read a Japanese text at least once every week

- take a practice test before paying money to do the test

- learn vocabulary using memrise.com for a month

- start practicing basic grammar after that month as well once a week
