Endemic Birds of Cuba
Tumblr media
Susan Kraft with specimens at Carnegie Museum of Natural History
We will be highlighting a series of endemic birds from Cuba in correspondence to a new exhibit appearing at Phipps Conservatory, Tropical Forest Cuba set to open Saturday, February, 10. Carvings were created by Susan Kraft (above), for the exhibit, using specimens from Carnegie Museum of Natural History as reference.
An endemic bird can be defined as one that only occurs in a given area, in this case, Cuba and the small islands surrounding this large island. Endemics only live in a specific area unless they are in captivity or became invasive in some way.

Cuban Trogon reference specimen
The first highlighted piece is an exquisite carving of a Cuban Trogon. The reference specimen used to create this carving was a specimen in the Carnegie Museum collection collected on March 1941 by W.H. Corning. Artists, sculptors, and carvers benefit by having real specimens to use as reference.
Tropical Forest Cuba is an exhibit opening February 10 at Phipps Conservatory. The exhibit showcases the vibrant ecology and culture of one of the most bio-diverse nations on Earth. Cuba houses more endemic animal and plant species than any other Caribbean island, boasting some of the most fascinating and unique bird species.

New in the comics shoppe!
2001: A Space Odyssey #1-10 by Jack Kirby NM First 10 issues of 2001 by Jack Kirby including first appearance of Machine Man in issue 8. Kirby starts off adapting the movie premise and then takes the series in a new direction. Issue 5 is, arguably, Kirby's masterpiece, "The White Zone", where people "play" at being SuperHeroes. All the issues are near mint. This collection was owned by a librarian and extremely well preserved.

Bill Boichel gives the fist Suzy & Cecil collection a thoughtful review on Copacetic Comics - and you can pick up a copy of the comic there too!
Bill sez:
“The Suzy & Cecil strip by Gabriella Tito and Sally Ingraham just recently celebrated it's first birthday, so it is now in its second year of appearing daily on Comics Workbook.   Here's a look at the first 30 strips, to get an idea of how it started out.  It's easy to see the strip improving, even in this brief period.  That this improvement continued is evidenced by the 44 strips in this collection. All the strips in the collection are full color, and color is a big part of the appeal.  A multitude of approaches to what can be accomplished in a daily strip are tried – all within the formal constraint of a square grid of four square panels – and it is clear that experimentation is a key component of this series.  And experimentation, after all, is a form of play, and playing is what Suzy & Cecil do best.
Reading this strip on a daily basis on Comics Workbook, and then grouped together here in this collection, is a constant reminder that play is a crucial part of being.    We all live our lives within the formal constraints placed upon us by our family, work, relationships, finances, etc., – in a word, society – and beyond that by the limits placed on us by nature and biology.  The actual, physical play we engaged in as children becomes ever more channeled and rule bound as we age, as our constraints change from those placed upon us by our parents and schools to those placed upon us by the need to survive.  One of the keys to happiness is acknowledging these constraints and then working within them.  That might even serve as a working definition of fun.  In these Suzy & Cecil strips we see, within the diegesis, on the the level of content, the characters playing; having fun – with each other, by themselves, with others, going on adventures, experiencing nature, and more.  And, on the formal level, we see the artists playing, within the constraints of the grid; experimenting – with character portrayals, drawing techniques, color palettes, pacing, and more.  In this way the recollected play of childhood innocence merges with the adult play based on experience and the development of skills.“

Looking for an interesting Christmas present for yourself or a pal? I always have cool stuff in my eBay shoppe!
Sediment - C.F. - PictureBox, 2011 - CHECK IT OUT HERE!
Brand new - individually numbered (446) out of an edition of 1,000 - initialed by the author "Sediment showcases the pure form of CF’s vision, set free from narrative content. A multi-media compilation of work done for gallery exhibitions, commercial illustrations, sketchbook pages, and miscellany, it manages to give an impressively well-rounded overview of the various facets of its artist’s creativity, the things that make CF both unique and valuable. This isn’t a comic as such — except for the reprint of a short Bookforum strip that closes things out, the imagery collected here is not sequential — but it also can’t quite be called an art book, given its pocket size and total lack of explanatory text. The most accurate description for it is simply “a book,” one consisting entirely of pictures. A space that belongs entirely to the images, free of even character and plot’s distractions, where the audience can come to see just how much CF’s hands are able to do to their eyes." from Matt Seneca's review for tcj.com
Alex Toth art book - written by Toth - edited by Manuel Auad - Kitchen Sink Press - 1995 - Paperback - CHECK IT OUT HERE!
For the serious Toth fan - or the simply curious - crammed with hard to find material from limited circulation publications, plus unpublished material from Toth's personal sketchbooks. Toth writes extensive commentary about his work and process, and comments on his own influences and his development. The introduction is written by Milton Caniff.
Ninja - Brian Chippendale - PictureBox - 2006 - CHECK IT OUT HERE!
This was Brian Chippendale's (co-founder of the Providence RI based Fort Thunder) first book publication - giant, oversized, bursting at the seams with 80 pages of the titular comic plus collages, drawings, and posters. Mostly black and white interior, with some color where it counts. This will need some attention and time to fully comprehend.
Gary Panter Set - Cola Madnes and 100.1 Drawings - CHECK IT OUT HERE!
Seminal works - Cola Madnes, the long lost graphic novel that was to be published in Japan in the early 80’s. And 100 Drawings, where Gary documents many of his best commissions.

New in my comics shoppe!
Schizophrenia by Vaughn Bode - paperback - 2001 - Fantagraphics Books
I found this collection of Vaughn Bode’s more personal comics recently - some of the pieces were published for the first time here. The autobiographical "Schizophrenia" is presented in full color, plus there is an early story long out of print that many consider a masterpiece - "The Man". Plenty of black and white comics in Bode's signature style, plus writings and drawings and hard-to-find illustration work. Lots of treats and things to interest the Bode fan. Check it out.
Mr. Beat Adventures #1 by Chris Yambar - signed - 1997 - PLUS The Beat Goes On #1 - 1998
Two comics by Chris Yambar, published out of Youngstown, OH, in the 90's - featuring the hilarious Mr. Beat, of the Caffeine Cult Society. These comics are extremely caffeinated, sure to give a jolt to your funny bone!! See the “Mr. Beat in Slumberland” story above for a taste and check out more HERE.
Plenty more weird and interesting comics in my shoppe!
