A friend of mine asked me to draw Sanguinius like Lucifer. And while doing it I thought about his feelings before and during the Horus Heresy. Were nightmares a common thing to him? If he darted up in horror? Or it was just endless pain and despair from (future) betrayal of beloved brother?

Yes, one of the problems of studying fandom by memes is the portrayal of Vulkan as an aggressive hugger and obsessive extravert.

Aside from Promethean Sun, where it says "troubled and lonely soul" about him, there's a very sad line in Know no fear about Guilliman and his comparison to other brothers.

There is none of the bitterness that shadows Corax, or the persecuted despair that haunts poor Konrad. There is never any of the deliberate mystery that obscures Alpharius or Magnus, and he is more open than that buried soul Vulkan.

I don't really know how what does it mean in english, but our translation was like “closed, self-absorbed, introverted”.

Guilliman here reflects that his brothers in general do not like him, they`re jealous of him, his success, education and everything else, and that is why he has only few friends.

What do we see in the book Vulkan Lives? That Vulkan REALLY LIKES Guilliman, even in hard situation he finds time to admire his looks, to appreciate his intelligence, to worry about him and say that Roboute is strong enough to crush Horus. Konrad even gets hysterical about how often Vulkan talks about him.

Vulkan actually loves all of his brothers and reacts harshly to the chronicler's attempt to say something questionable about them.

This leads me to the sad thought that Vulkan is really so closed, humble and lonely that he can't even properly show other brothers his affection and good attitude, so they don't even know about it.

And when he tries to do that, his love language is gifts. He's constantly giving something to them, crafting things, weapons, because he's perhaps (as I think) too shy for big words. Ferrus was the first brother he was introduced to, and it's like Vulkan stays attached to him the most until the end, like a baby duck. My baby is so precious. Thank goodness we have fanfiction where I can give him all this love that he was deprived of in canon.

And my personal shattered glass - what if Roboute, who had previously seen Vukan as someone distant and obscure, too closed off, in that famous glass scene in Unremembered Empire finally says "My dear brother is returned to me!” that maybe he only realizes now that Vulkan is important too, but it's too late.

I really like the idea...

...that every Space Marine - except for the greenest, most clueless recruits - has their own personal serf.

Someone who knows everything about them. What books they like to read, the weird position they sleep in, the little things they mutter to themselves when they’re deep in thought.

The serf cleans their cell (because I’m pretty sure most Space Marines have their own personal space, no matter how much the Imperium screams about collectivism), folds their clothes, cooks their meals, carries their gear - all the usual duties of a personal servant.

But there’s one task that’s never officially written down, yet everybody knows it’s real - human company.

Most Astartes tend to choose women as their personal serfs. They prefer young girls. There’s something about their presence: soft voices, soothing hands, a certain glow that eases the tension in those rare hours of peace between battles. They make those quiet moments - the ones that are still heavy and complicated - just a little bit gentler.

Sure, it’s technically against the Codex Astartes, but Chaplains usually look the other way. You can’t forbid a wounded, love-starved soul from reaching out for a taste of a better world. You can alter one's brain all you want but urge to be loved hide so deep it can't be purged without dragging the sanity with it. Even the most zealous fanatics understand that.

It’s not uncommon for Space Marines to fall in love with their personal serfs.

So, a bond between an Astartes and his serf isn’t seen as scandalous or shocking anymore.

In fact, some Legions quietly encourage their best warriors to find someone special - to get attached. Why? Because there’s an old belief that a warrior who knows a beloved girl is waiting for him in a warm bed will fight with twice the fury.

The Imperium, the Emperor, honor - they’re so distant, so untouchable. But the woman you love? She’s right here. She hugs you tightly before you put on your armor, and suddenly, you’ll do anything to see those burning eyes and blushing cheeks one more time.

Of course, none of this is ever written in the Codex Astartes.
