Earlier today we announced to the press that we are running a beta test program for Post+, Tumblr’s newest add-on subscription tool. Post+ is a completely optional tool that will allow creators to make some of their posts exclusive to their paid subscribers. You can read more about it right over here on our @postplus Tumblr. This feature is being tested by a small group of incredible creators on Tumblr.

We want to hear about what you like, what you love, and what concerns you. Even if it’s not very nice. Tell us. We can take it. We WANT that feedback. It helps us make Tumblr better.

What we won’t ever accept is the targeted harassment and threats these creators have endured since this afternoon. These creators are some of the most talented people around, and all they’re doing is testing out a feature. These are the people who graciously agreed to pilot a program to help us discover bugs before we open it up to all creators. These are the humans who are testing a feature that we hope will soon help thousands of Tumblr creators feel empowered, get rewarded for their efforts, and find support within their community.

Our Community Guidelines are clear: Don't engage in targeted abuse, bullying, or harassment.

Anyone in violation of these guidelines will be dealt with swiftly and will be forced to contend with the appropriate consequences. It’s okay to tell us how you feel. It’s not okay to bully someone because you disagree with their choices.

In light of the recent PostPlus nonsense tumblr is trying to pull, here's a reminder that monetization of fanfiction can lead you to legal trouble. On Ao3 it's against the TOS to even mention any money-sending site at all because of the conditonal protection they offer.

Putting your entire fanfiction blog behind a paywall is like pointing a neon sign saying "please sue me". I bring this up specifically because tumblr mentioned fanfiction in the post that they made and that is going to leave a lot of people misinformed.

Remember: Do NOT paywall your fanworks.

And rest assured, my blog will never be pay-to-read, even if this weren't a fanfiction blog. I think the whole thing is ridiculous.

Stuff kids on tumblr better relearn

1. You are responsible for your own media experience. 

2. There is such a thing as a healthy level of avoidance towards topics that make you feel unwell or even (in a real-life clinical definition of the term) trigger you - but you are the one to actively take care of what you view.

3. Avoiding does not mean policing others.

4. You have no right to tell artists to censor themselves - you may criticize what others do, you may dislike it, that’s fine - but actively asking for censorship when you could easily unfollow or block a person just makes you look incompetent in your use of the internet.

5. Do not give people on tumblr or /any/ website the responsibility for your emotional well-being. Because these people do not even know you so no, you have no right to ask them to take care of you.

hey caly, this ask is gonna be kind a bummer. you don't have to post it and i'll try to make it short. i don't have anyone to talk to about this and i wouldn't dare post it on my blog for fear of guilting my followers for anything so i hope you are lenient with me for dumping on you - i promise this will be the only one i ever send.

i'm sad about writing. i'm sad that interaction is down to almost non-existent, and i'm sad that the obvious reason for that is that my writing just isn't good enough. i'm sad that i thought it was. it's like getting psyched about something you love and sharing it with people only for no one to share your enthusiasm about it. i love writing and i love the stories i do and i guess i will keep writing them for me and the five people who still comment about it...i can't even barely get my mutuals and friends to read my stories anymore haha. i guess i just have to stop checking for interaction until i'm finished telling them and then be done with it.

thank you for moc and everything else you do. i will always always be checking for your work and loving it!! you're incredibly talented and kind and i just need you to know that! sorry for this ask that sucks lol lemmie end it before i make myself cry but you're great thanks for everything again!

i went back and forth debating on whether to publicly post this ask or answer it separately but i ultimately decided to post it because i resonate with your words and relate to them a lot and i know there are.... so so many writers out there who feel the same and suffer the same and struggle the same. i truly have no issues receiving asks like this or having conversations about these sorts of things because they’re real and valid feelings and they don’t make me uncomfy in any way.

the biggest struggle a writer has to suffer in posting their works for free and publicly the way we do is that interaction and feedback. i don’t have an explanation for how the system works or what it takes to get feedback, i truly don’t. but i can say with absolute certainty that it is NOT the quality of your writing. i have seen the most talented writers i’ve ever seen pushed off platforms because of lack of interaction. it has nothing to do with talent or skill or anything like that. it’s not about your writing being ‘good enough’ because it’s always going to be good enough, and it’s always something to be proud of. is it hard to believe that when the feedback and interaction isn’t there? hell fucking yeah. i have scrapped endless amounts of ideas because of lack of interest and interaction from readers and friends and that’s simply something that’s hard to overcome. i’ve shared snippets of fics that i feel phenomenal about and so proud of, only to receive nothing or get ignored in return, and that’s a feeling that crushes my soul and it’s so so hard to get past that.

the biggest lesson i had to learn was taking that step back and telling myself to stop looking at notes and reblogs and comments for a certain amount of time after i posted something. moc is my exception for that rule, but on pretty much every other fic, i wait 24 hours before checking. i had to teach myself to do that because i was getting stuck in the rut of looking for notes and feedback and reblogs where i wasn’t getting any, and when i took a step back, i learned to appreciate and love those five people who commented on my things and it’s hard but i think it’s something that comes over time. 

it breaks my heart to see creators discouraged and hurting because of the consumerist nature of fandoms, but i never want you to give up on the gift you have or the talent you hold. even if right now you don’t feel like what you provide is good enough, i promise you that it is and that there are people who love and appreciate every ounce of your work no matter what <3

if there’s anything i believe in these days it’s my own resilience. no matter how many setbacks i come across i am still actively dreaming the best version of myself into existence each and every day. i am relentless in pursuing what i want and i am patient enough to wait for my efforts to pay off. i’ll make it. i’ll always make it.
