How To Talk Like A Samurai

Samurai Japanese is actually just old Japanese from the Edo period. Taking this way is old fashioned and can be compared to how we view Shakespearean English. Here are some words and phrases to talk the way of the Samurai.

お主 (おぬし) second person

used to people of a lower rank.

お主は何者じゃ？ （おぬしはなにものじゃ？）

Who are you?

拙者 （せっしゃ) first person

拙者 is a word that humbles the user to the listener. It literally means a clumsy person. the kanji “拙” means clumsy, unskillful and 者 means person, someone.

拙者は侍だ！（せっしゃはさむらいだ！）

I’m a samurai!

でござる

＝です

ご機嫌いかがでござるか? (ごきげんいかがでござるか？）

How are you?

Another alternative is “ 達者 (たっしゃ) でござるか？” 達者 means “ in good health”. 達者でござるか also means “ how are you?”

いざ

now, a 掛け声(かけごえ）used when urging someone, similar to さあ

いざ 参ろう！ ( いざ まいろう！）

Let’s go now!

いざ 討ち入り！( いざ うちいり）

The samurai way of saying thank you.

うつけ

＝ばか

Describes an absentminded person. A blockhead. It can be written as 空け and 虚け.  One of the 空’s meaning is empty, vacant. The kanji 虚 also means emptiness, void. Makes sense, doesn’t it? A ぼんやりしてる人.

 うつけ！お主にこれは無理じゃ！（うつけ！ おぬしにこれはむりじゃ！）

You idiot! This is too much for you!

たわけ者(たわけもの ) is a similar word. It means a stupid person, fool, idiot.

このたわけ者めが、何をする?

What is this fool doing?

謀事（たばかりごと)

scheme, plan, plot, conspiracy

これは、敵の謀事じゃ！(これは、てきのたばかりごとじゃ！）

This is the enemy’s plan!

御家の一大事（おいえのいちだいじ）

This is serious!

This is big!

When a samurai says this phrase, they mean 主君 (しゅくん lord) when they say 御家（おいえ home). 一大事( いちだいじ) means a serious affair. The Samurai can also use this to talk about something happening to themselves. This is a phrase used when a serious event happens to exaggerate the magnitude of the serious event. The land is being attacked by the enemy? 御家の一大事！

仕る （つかまつる）

やります、 致します(いたします）

仕る is 丁寧語（ていねいご polite language) of the simple word “to do”.

委細承知仕りました (いさいしょうちつかまつりました。）

委細(いさい)＝詳細(しょうさい). 委細 means details.

承知 means awareness, consent, acknowledge. 

So 委細承知 means ‘total situation fully understood’. Then 仕る means to do. Therefore, 委細承知仕りました is a very very polite, kinda excessive way of saying  “I understand completely’. This was to be directed to someone you’re supposed to give a lot of respect to. 

感服仕りました。（かんぷくつかまつりました。）

I’m impressed!

感服 (かんぷく) means admiration. Use it when someone drops some impressive サムライ語 in conversation.
