02x21 SAM: You ruined my life. You killed everyone I love.

On the surface, the 4.07 Cas and Sam meeting where Sam is like “omg an angel it’s an honor i love u” and Cas responds with “ah, yes, the Demon Blood One” is hilarious, but I keep seeing it be used as part of serious meta about Sam and Cas and Cas hating Sam from the start and I actually…think this is untrue.

Like. if you actually look at the full scene–

Cas walks up to Sam first and greets him, Sam does what can only be described as fangirling and sticks his hand out and Cas hesitates, obviously making a decision:

but then, instead of rejecting him or being outright disgusted, he reaches out to take Sam’s hand. And then, as he’s saying his “the boy with the demon blood” line, he covers Sam’s hand with his other one and holds it steady between his own. That is not a hostile action–it’s comforting. It’s accepting.

Yeah, Sam looks hurt, as anyone would, but that meant something. The angel Castiel (who is only beginning to doubt at this point) looks at Sam Winchester, the boy with demon blood, and takes his hand between his own. He looks at him and says “glad to see you’ve ceased your extracurricular activities,” which. If s15 Cas had said that I would immediately ping it as intentionally rude, but s4 Cas is earnest above all else. When Uriel pipes in with “let’s keep it that way,” that’s threatening, but Cas just holds Sam’s gaze and his hand. I genuinely think he was being serious, that he’s glad Sam is no longer drinking the blood which I guess is another argument about how that part of Sam should have been accepted, but whatever.  

And!!! here’s my main point (because as much as I love Sam, everything I ever think about circles back to Castiel): I think this is immensely important to Cas’ character. This is during the beginning stage of Cas doubting Heaven, this episode ends with the “I’m not a hammer. I have questions, I have doubts” conversation with Dean. None of the other angels would even touch Sam to begin with–they’re actively hostile to him. I do think that both deciding to take his hand and then holding it like that is an acceptance of Sam, in his colder, s4 way, and that decision is one of the tiny acts of rebellion and doubt that pepper the beginning of s4 and set him apart from the other angels.
