Happy Chinese New Year! It’s a special one to me, being born in the year of the Rooster. So here’s a piece to celebrate, and perhaps the start of a new series :)
The year of the rooster includes 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005, 2017, and 2029 and those lucky folks are meant to be hard-working, independent, sociable, active, organised, punctual and observant (as well as boastful, arrogant, impatient and vain). I’m not sure this entirely lines up with me (punctual/organised haha…) though for everyone it is meant to be a year of progress and hard work while sticking to the practical path.
Enjoy the New Year, and wishing you a fabulous year of the rooster!
In Suzanne Moxhay’s recent work she has been exploring concepts of spatial containment in montages built from fragments of photographed and painted interiors. Architectures are disrupted by anomalous elements – contradictory light sources, faulty perspective, paradoxes of scale. Light casts shadows in the wrong direction, walls fail to meet in corners, an area of the image can be seen either as an enclosing wall or dark overcast sky.

You’re nothing but a tree trunk! A heartless, spineless, eyeless, noseless hunk of wood! Dumbbell, blunderbuss, stump-chewer! You damn potato-puller! Quit acting like a big-shot! All you spew is puffed-up prattle!
This loud voice is my voice, and it’s got louder and louder and louder to go!
You’re a nincompoop, damn fool, addle pate! And on top of that, you’re a sleazy dirtbag good-for-nothing bumbly-wumbly caterpillar!
That kid is my son, and no one gets to tell me otherwise! What’s it matter if he doesn’t look like me?! Listen up! Don’t you dare come for him later, because I’m not giving him up! And don’t you doubt it!
As of today, the conversation’s over! Subject closed!
And that is what I had to say. Unworthy though it was.

❛ the land of the remembered was vibrant and joyous! everything was like the land above, but it was more colourful, it was more beautiful, it was more festive! ❜
