Photography is an art of observation. It has little to do with the thing you see and everything to do with how you see them.  Elliott Erwitt

End of year Exhibition review
Describe the roes involved in setting up and exhibition
there were four different teams: Install, Promotions, mediate and de-stall. Each team played a vital role in the success of out exhibition. the promotions team promoted the exhibition through the use of social media and posters. The mediators made sure that the work was safe and looked after the exhibition. The install team put up the exhibition and the de-stall team took the exhibition down.
Describe your own involvement - what did you do to make it a success?
I was part of the install team which involved measuring and being careful when putting up images that they were straight and on the same line as all other images
describe the effectiveness of the venue
The theatre royal was a very spacious venue which also offered a lot of natural light.
how did you go about selecting the work you are showing ?
I picked my favourite images and then showed the to my lab class lecturer who helped me whittle it down to two final images.
Comment on the effectiveness of the framing and layout.
unlike our exhibition last year all image were uniform. All images were printed at the same size and presented in a black rimmed A3 frame. I think that this complimented the images and helped them flow well.
What does the exhibition say about the work produced at COGC?
it showed the variety of different styles present at COGC
Which work attracts you and why?
I really like fashion portraiture as the colours and abstract clothing always catches my eye
How will others know about the exhibition?
the promotions team took to social media to show behind the scenes of setting up our exhibition as well as a few take overs by students.

Contextual Photography Class (Sunday, 10th of March 2019)
A few weeks ago in class, we watched a documentary called “Bricks!”, which is about the controversy that arose from the Tate Gallery buying a piece of artwork from American artist Carl Andre in 1972.
Although the subject matter of the artwork caused public outcry, the price that the Tate Gallery spent back in 1972 infuriated the general public as it was seen as spending the “taxpayer’s money”, which cost £3,000 - the equivalent to £30,000 today. Overall, I find Andre’s bricks uninteresting, dreary and incredibly lifeless. However, I do appreciate the debate that the bricks caused, which was questioning what exactly is art.

Content Aware Tool (Thursday, 13th of June 2019)
Step-by-step guide: “Move”
Import your image onto Adobe Photoshop, then copy the background to create a new layer.
Select the Content Aware Move tool located under the Spot Healing Brush tool.
Select the following; Mode = Move // Structure = 4 // Colour = 4 // Sample All Layers and Transform on Drop.
Make a selection around one of the balloons then click and drag the selection to the desired space on the image.
Step-by-step guide: “Extend”
Select Extend instead of Move in the mode section located at the top of the bar.
Make another selection around one of the balloons then click and drag the selection to the desired space on the image. This selection duplicates the subject.
I followed a YouTube tutorial as a guide to using the content aware tool, which I found incredibly simple and helpful.

1. The significance of the ‘photographic journey’ in the three decades from the 1950′s is because it was at this point that photographers started exploring new areas of photography such as photographing desserts and open roads. it also marks the time when they were experimenting with colour photography as a medium.
2. He is seen using a 10X8 large format film camera. He used this instead of a digital camera as the large format camera can capture images with fine detail and is perfectly suited to wide shots. The camera is also on a tripod which makes it stable and allows him to move away from the camera. Also Digital cameras at that time may have not been able to produce as good an image as the the large format camera could.
3. Robert Frank’s book had such a huge impact as it showed what the 1950s were like in its purest form. in his book he showed from an outsiders view a nine month long road trip. He documented the culture that was evolving along the way. His book showed that they were living in a time that was going to remembered in human history, With the introduction of space exploration there was a vast feeling of optimism that everyone felt.
4. his work was from a very artistic point of view, he worked at a fast pace, his photographs were abstract, unconventional and he used cropping techniques such as framing to make his work unique.
5. He personally felt that the cities had to be approached In different ways. This was because unlike Paris which felt sweet and elegant, New York was full of energy and to feel this energy he had to get close to people, feeling their intimacy and confronting the flow of people to feel involved.
6. His key points were to be more aggressive, get involved and talk to people, take similar pictures, stay with the subject and be patient, don't take boring pictures and get closer to the subject.
7. British photographers have gravitated to the beach as the beach is seen as a stage where classic themes are played out. The people of the beach are performers, where you can record the eccentricity of them and the place, with the performers revealing something they wouldn’t normally do. The beach shows unguarded subjects, spontaneous and candid moments, family dramas, love and the disappointments of everyday life.
8. To me surface rather than soul means that an images look can initially grab the views attention more than the story behind the images. They are drawn to the image and then learn its meaning.
9. Stephen Shore’s road trips were about keeping a visual diary of everywhere, with including the people he met and the stores he went into, whereas Joel Sternfield road trips were a documentation of banal scenes and objects. Both photographers worked with colour photography, being one of the first to do so.
10. William Eggleston is regarded as the ‘king’ as he is the pioneer of colour photography. when he used colour photography it was not appreciated like black and white film. his use of extensive flash combined with colour, emphasises the impact the images have, which is something a roll of black and white film couldn't have. Eggleston used colour to bring structure to his photographs and convey different moods. His photographs show the changing culture in Tennessee and the rural south. He shows this through a variety of different scenes such as portraits of family and friends. He doesn't have clear answer to why he has photographed certain subjects but explains that he photographs everyday life.

brand archetype
as I said previously in my brand narrative post I feel that this brief would have been more beneficial if It was more accessory based because like adverts you see they have a model on location and edit the product into the foreground. I think that my final image is successful and looks as tho he is actually standing there, I took care to shoot it from an angle where it would look realistic that he was standing there and then in the studio posed and lit the model to replicate the lighting of the on location shot. I used the pen tool to cut him out and used the clone stamp to help with any issues with his hair or the background.

Brand Narrative
I have included below my contact sheet of my first edit and the final images for this brief. I feel as tho this brief should have been more brand based rather than accessory and that the brand archetype should have been more accessory based. I wouldn't say I particularly enjoyed this brief but I am pleased with the final images as they are well posed and show skills in lighting as I lit my studio portrait to get the spray coming out of the bottle.I shot my on location portrait as a close up to show variety and show the product. If I were to shoot this again I would use a colour book to ensure that the colours in both images look the same so that they would sit better.

Italian vogue
below I will include my first edit contact sheet and my final images for the Italian vogue brief. Again this shoot was done in partnership with the GCU students and like the preivious shoot the location, models, hair and makeup artists and clothing were already sourced by the GCU students. This shoot took place in the Blythswood square hotel. I feel that furthered my experience in working for a client, working with models and using flash indoors and mixing it with the ambient lighting in the room. I am very pleased with the outcome of this shoot and look forward to doing more work like this in my graded unit project.
