We’ve compiled our top 7 favorite billfish destinations that all provide excellent numbers and size of fish, and are also beautiful locations to allow you to extend your vacation with a variety of activities to choose from.

St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands

Almost a literal guarantee to catch a blue marlin when you go to the US Virgin Islands. There is no place on earth provides more consistent numbers of blue marlin than the area known as North Drop – located off the eastern end of St. Thomas. This body of water is ideal, as it is an incredibly deep portion of the Puerto Rican Trench. This allows for the waters to hold large amounts of bait that migrating marlin just can't resist. Fish here average in the 300-pound range, although 500-pounders are not uncommon.

In addition to amazing fishing, the Virgin Islands are absolutely beautiful and full or either adventure or pure relaxation. If your planning on bringing the wife – this is the place to go!

Costa Rica

Over the past decade, Costa Rica has become a major must-visit eco-tourism hot spot. The Costa Rican government has set aside nearly 20 percent of its land in the form of national parks and protected areas - so visitors can enjoy everything from zipping through the jungle, to hiking an active volcano. The San Juan International Billfish Tournament (held each August) is the longest continually running billfish tournament in the world - And even holds the record for the most blue marlin caught in a four day tournament

Being so close to the US mainland, anglers are able to experience a unique all inclusive fishing trip, where you can fish by day with great charter boats ( with a chance of multiple marlin days, and enjoy amazing food and cocktails at night along some of the most beautiful beaches in the world — and you don't even need a passport to do it!

Guatemala

I first visited Guatemala more than 17 years ago, and at that time I wouldn't have classified this Central American hot spot as an easy-to-fish destination. The huge numbers of sailfish that swarm off the Guatemalan coast had just been discovered, and the infrastructure had not yet caught up with the hot bite offshore.

Decent accommodations in the fishing area around the port city of Iztapa were nonexistent. The first place I stayed down there had an air conditioner in the room that dripped on my head and sounded like someone trying to kick-start a Harley-Davidson. My, how times have changed. Once the indomitable Tim Choate opened up the now-defunct Fins N' Feathers lodge, Guatemala's fishing and lodging alternatives exploded. A new marina, built by longtime angler and Guatemalan promoter Fernando Aguilar, provided excellent dockage, kept boats from having to navigate a horrible inlet every day and helped pave the way to making this remote spot one of the easiest places to fish.

Guatemala hosts a ridiculous amount of Pacific sailfish from December through March, with anglers sometimes releasing more than 40 fish a day. Blue marlin make their appearance in these waters as well, so you'll be thankful for the world-class, English-speaking captains at the helm. Top-notch lodges, boats and a fabulous landscape make the Guatemalan experience all the more enticing.

Cabo San Lucas

Get ready for the fight of your life when you set out for deep sea fishing Cabo San Lucas style. Cabo is world renowned for its amazing billfish fishery. Each year anglers from all over the world come to participate in one of the many Cabo fishing tournaments – with the most notable being the Bisbee’s Black and Blue Marlin Tournament, that happens in late October each year. The Bisbee is the World’s richest sport fishing tournament in the world, with the highest payout for a winning team being $3.9 million in 2006!

It is reported that there are more marlin caught per hour in Cabo than at anywhere else in the world. In these deep blue Pacific waters, striped Marlins are around in huge numbers during the months from September to March, while the trophy Blue and Black marlins take over from June to October. This beautiful Mexican Baja getaway is also great for hooking into some dorado, roosterfish, wahoo, yellowfin tuna, sailfish, or even some mako sharks. Plus, it consistently has the best weather you could ever hope for.

In addition to world class fishing, Cabo has amazing beaches, top notch restaurants, top rated golf courses, and of course a spectacular nightlife scene to choose from as well.

Dominican Republic

Over the last decade the Dominican Republic has risen into one of the hottest Blue Marlin fisheries in the world, with other billfish close behind. As this area can be considered as a rough water fishery at time, it is sure to put your angling skills to the ultimate test.

Dominican Republic is unique in that it has both blue and white marlin show up in the clear, emerald Caribbean waters. The blue marlin that cruise these waters are a little smaller than soe of our other recommended marlin fishing grounds, but they make for some great light tackle and fly fishing.

Cairns

Having had over 800 “Granders” caught since the 1960’s the beautiful down under fishing spot is absolutely one of the best places for Marlin fishing.
