#Catullus8 - We Are Never Getting Back Together âą"Nunc iam illa nĆn vult: tĆ« quoque impotÄns nĆlÄ«" ~ I remember when we broke up the first time âą"Nunc iam illa nĆn vult: tĆ« quoque impotÄns nĆlÄ«" ~ I remember when we broke up the first time "Quem nunc amÄbis?" ~ But ooh, this time I'm telling you, I'm telling you we are never ever ever getting back together âąThere is a common theme of a breakup and never getting back together. A message is that now its officially over, the people will not be getting back together. Taylor Swift and Catullus make sure they get the message across that this is it, they will not be getting back together. Â

The message of having interest in someone is prevalent. One Direction is in awe of the girl and so is Catullus.

Lyinâ Eyes- Eagles
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WeNBspJGVko
Latin:
-Nulli se dicit mulier mea nubere malle -dicit: sed mulier cupido quod dicit amanti                               in vento et rapida scribere oportet aqua.
Translation:
-My woman says to me that there is none with whom sheâd rather spend her days than I
-What a woman says to a desirous lover, This he ought to write in the wind and rapid water.
Lyrics:Â
-Â She rushes to his arms, They fall together She whispers that itâs only for awhile She swears that soon sheâll be cominâ back forever She pulls away and leaves him with a smile You canât hid your lyinâ eyes
Explanation: Both Catullus and Glenn Frey, who sings the song, speak about their distrust of women. Catullus says that his woman tells him there is nobody she loves more, but he realizes that he cannot fully trust everything she says. In the Eagles song it is also clear that although the woman says she will be back and they will be together forever, the man can tell she is untruthful. The song expresses the idea that Catullus uses to not take a womanâs words too seriously. Both authors realize how to interpret womenâs words, and both agree that women lie about who they love when speaking to their âlover.â

Live While Weâre Young- One Direction
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbPED9bisSc
Latin:
- Vivamus mea Lesbia, atque amemus, rumoresque senum severiorum omnes unius aestimemus assis!
-soles occidere et redire possunt
Translation:
- Let us live, my Lesbia, and let us love, and let us judge all the rumors of old men                              as worth just one penny!
-The suns are able to fall and rise
Lyrics:
- And never, never, never stop for anyone Tonight letâs get some and live while weâre young
- Letâs go crazy, crazy, crazy âtil we see the sun
-Wanna live, wanna live, wanna live while weâre young
Explanation:
In this poem, Catullus explains the joy of having his secret love, but also the desire to use every valuable moment with the one he loves. He talks about not taking anybodyâs rumors stop him from loving Lesbia. He only wants to live life to the fullest and love as much as possible before he dies. One Direction uses the same idea of not letting what anybody thinks get in the way of doing what makes you happy. The band also expresses the need to live because life doesnât last forever. The one contrast to notice is that the song is more focused on living for the night and in Catullusâ poem he wants to live and love as much as he can until he dies, These songs both display a desire to get the most out of experiences and also to not let what other people say distract you or effect your happiness.

Hate That I Love You- Rihanna (ft. Ne-Yo)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KMOOr7GEkj8
Latin:Â
-Odi et Amo\
Translation:Â
-I hate and I love
Lyric:Â
-And I hate that I love you so
Explanation: Catullus expresses a sense of frustration over his love, most likely, for Lesbia. He hates it and he loves it, but he doesnât know why he continues to let this thing torture him. Similarly, Rihanna is in a love-hate relationship with her significant other. She sings about how even when she gets mad, she stays, not knowing why, but only knowing that she cannot give it up. Catullus and Rihanna are both tortured by love, but neither can stop loving.
