Simple and Healthy Meals from the Freezer
Simple and Healthy Meals from the Freezer

Make simple and healthy meals that you can freeze
I have mentioned several times that this month, in a bid to save money, we are eating out of the freezer. For Mr Simple and I, eating out of the freezermeans eating home cooked meals that one of us made extra of last week or last month. As a rule, I tend to use these as we go along, particularly if I am going to be home late or if Mr Simple has…

Creating Peace of Mind
Creating Peace of Mind

Having some of this stashed away for an emergency reduces stress when you encounter a bump in the road
I haven’t had much luck with my car recently. You may recall that a few days after I returned from my holiday with my mother someone pulled out of a side road and crashed into the side of my car. Fortunately he wasn’t going very fast and swerved once he saw me coming, so the damage was…

The main event this month was my holiday in Italy with my mum. Although I spent money on the holiday, this all came out of money I had saved throughout the year.

Make Every Day Exciting
Make Every Day Exciting

I was recently persuaded to go into the city centre on a Saturday night for a colleague’s leaving do. By the time that I arrived at 6pm she and several others had been out all afternoon drinking. I was just there for something to eat. My days of going out to bars and clubs are long behind me and mainly happened in my late teens and early twenties. Now I sit and watch aghast at what goes on and…

Lessons from the older generation
Lessons from the older generation

The view from our balcony
For regular readers of this blog you will know that I have just returned from a week away in Italy with my mum. We stayed on Lake Maggiore, which was fabulous and I would recommend it to anyone, but it is certainly not a frugal holiday destination. We saw luxurious hotels (although unfortunately weren’t staying in one) and a classic car show, sponsored by a Swiss…

August Review

We started the 5:2 diet this month
I feel as though not a lot happened in August, mostly I think because the weather took a turn for the worse up until the Bank Holiday weekend, which was a scorcher.
Mr Simple and I started the 5:2 dietand he has lost 6lbs, whereas I’ve only lost 1lb. Fortunately I don’t need to lose weight. I think the reason for my lack of progress is that on the days…

Taking A Break

If you’re a regular here you will know that I am going away with my mum for a week to Italy at the beginning of next month. I’m not as organised as I would like to be and therefore don’t have lots of posts already written to schedule over the time that I am away. I am therefore going to be taking a short break from the blog.
I will be returning home on Wednesday 11th September and will do my…

Bank Holiday Savings

We all enjoyed some warm and sunny weather this weekend
It’s coming to the end of the bank holiday weekend and I hope that you’ve had the chance to enjoy some sunshine. After what seems like weeks of rain it was good to feel that summer was back again. Mr Simple and I have spent most of our time painting the outside of the house; we wanted to make the most of the dry weather. As well as being…

Stretching the Food Budget
Stretching the Food Budget

We are lucky enough to have lots of veg from the garden at present
As you know from this previous post I am doing a monthly shop and then topping up each week with perishables e.g. milk, veg and fruit. I have to say that this arrangement is going really well and has completely taken the stress-factor out of the weekly shop. I whizzed around the supermarket in about 15 minutes this week.

August Intentions

This month for some reason I decided to write some intentions. For me they are not really goals, but something more vague. Just a general idea about some things that I intend to do. They were:
Start the 5:2 diet with Mr Simple
Continue painting the house
Prepare for Italy holiday
Continue to declutter my study
Read ‘Deep Work’ by Cal Newport and begin implementing its advice
So how am I doing?

Monthly Meal Planning

Last month I mainly bought tins of tomatoes, beer and crisps in my online order
In my June review I mentioned that I had been reading ‘The Complete Tightwad Gazette’ by Amy Dacyczyn and that as a result I had decided to make a monthly online grocery order for July. I have to say that went well. I mainly ordered tins, beer and crisps in bulk.
I decided that I would do the same thing for…
