Żurek is a traditional Polish soup characterized by its distinctively sour taste, which comes from sour leavening, or the fermentation of bread and rye flour. The soup also contains meats such as sausages, bacon, or ham, and vegetables such as potatoes and mushrooms. Although it is extremely popular throughout Poland, each region has its own version of the dish. It is sometimes served in an edible bowl made of bread, when it is common to add halves of hard-boiled eggs on top of the soup as garnish. Żurek is traditionally prepared and consumed during Easter. There is a popular version of the soup called barszcz bialy, made with wheat flour instead of rye flour. The name żur is derived from the German word sur, or sauer, meaning sour, referring to the typical flavor of this popular, hearty soup. src.: https://www.tasteatlas.com/zhur

Trifle is a classic British dessert made by layering pieces of sponge cake, fruit jams or fruit purée, and egg custard. The sponge is usually soaked in fortified wine or brandy such as sherry, port, or Marsala, and the whole dessert is commonly topped with whipped cream. Trifle is traditionally prepared in glass bowls, and the classic version is often altered with various flavorings and additions such as chocolate, jelly, nuts, glacé cherries, as well as fruit juice or soft drinks in a non-alcoholic version. The familiar form of trifle was well-known by the Victorian era, but unlike today, it was primarily made to make use of leftover sponge cakes and custards. Similar desserts can be found in Scotland (tipsy laird) and the Southern United States (tipsy cake). src.: https://www.tasteatlas.com/trifle photo ref.: Annalise Sandberg

Flaming Volcano - Believed to be invented between the 1950s and the 1960s in Hawaii, Flaming Volcano is a popular Tiki cocktail made with a combination of rum, brandy, orange juice, pineapple juice, lemon juice, and almond syrup. In order to prepare it, all ingredients except rum are blended with crushed ice, then poured into a volcano bowl – a decorative ceramic bowl resembling a volcano cone, with a specially designed central crater on the inside. The crater is then filled with rum, which is ignited in order to resemble a volcano. This unique drink is traditionally served to a group of people, with long straws in the bowl, used to keep one’s hair away from the flames. src.: https://www.tasteatlas.com/flaming-volcano

Kikomando - This simple, inexpensive Ugandan dish combines pieces of torn chapatti and beans. The optional addition includes avocado, while variations employ stews, chicken, or gravy. It is believed that the dish initially appeared as a popular breakfast or lunch option in the early 2000s when people simply combined the unleavened chapatti with beans. The name was later coined by Bobi Wine, who used the term in one of his songs. Kikomando is enjoyed throughout the country and is a staple dish at many chapatti establishments. src.: https://www.tasteatlas.com/kikomando photo ref.: Sophie M.

The unique combination of cheese (ideally, salty and firm manchego cheese) and a slice of flavorful quince paste known as dulce de membrillo makes the Uruguayan treat known as Martín Fierro. The dish got its name from a character with the same name, popularized in the stories of José Hernández, who wrote about freedom and gauchos - an equivalent to the American cowboys. Hernández always ordered a dessert based on the popular Argentinian treat known as Vigilante - a dish of cheese slices combined with a sweet potato paste. Uruguay's version of the dish replaced the sweet potato paste with quince paste, and since Hernández was a famous activist for gaucho rights and his every move was observed, the news of his preference for the Uruguayan version of the dish quickly spread across the country. Soon, the dish was named Martín Fierro in the writer's honor. src.: https://www.tasteatlas.com/martin-fierro

Obi non or lepyoshka is a traditional Uzbekistani flatbread that is somewhat thicker than naan and is typically shaped into a disc with a decorated top. The dough is made from flour, water, salt, and yeast, and it is traditionally baked in a clay oven known as a tandyr. Today, there are numerous varieties of the flatbread such as bukhara lepyoshka (sprinkled with sesame and nigella seeds), flaky lepyoshka with cream and butter, and tashkent lepyoshka that is baked as a pastry with milk, butter, and sugar. src.: https://www.tasteatlas.com/obi-non photo ref.: https://silkroadchef.wordpress.com/2015/12/14/uzbek-nan-bread/

Egg coffee is a sweet and dense Vietnamese beverage that traditionally consists of strong black coffee that is mixed with a combination of egg yolks and sweetened condensed milk. The coffee is mostly made using a traditional Vietnamese phin filter in which the coffee is brewed and then slowly dripped in a cup. The origin of the drink dates back to 1950s and the French Indochina War. During the period, milk was scarce, and a barista by the name Nguyen Van Giang decided to use eggs as a replacement. At the time, he was working at the Sofitel Hotel in Hanoi, but after his creation became successful, he eventually opened his shop, Giang Cafe, which still exists in Hanoi and is run by his son. src.: https://www.tasteatlas.com/egg-coffee ref photo.: The Spruce Eats / Sonia Bozzo

By now, you all must have seen the news that Gaza had officially run out of food, as one of the main aid suppliers in Gaza, World Food Program, had announced that their stock has been completely depleted, leaving just a few days for community kitchens to function.
This comes after more than 50 days (and counting) of Israel's complete closure of the borders, preventing food and medicine, among other life essentials, from entering Gaza. There are children crying out of hunger with trucks loaded with over 100,000 tons of food mere minutes away from them, which Israel continues to prevent from entering besieged Gaza.
This also comes after Israel had deliberately destroyed swaths of farmlands in Gaza, specifically targeting them with bombs and chemical weapons that destroy the chance of growing crops. Israel also made sure bakeries are destroyed as well as water sources.
Diabolical is an understatement when it comes to the Zionist entity.
There are still things you can do. On top of raising awareness and protesting when possible, independent organisations like APN are working directly with farmers in Gaza to rehabilitate the agricultural sector and restore local food systems to combat famine, counter the blockade and build food sovereignty. You can donate to their Revive Gaza's Farmlands initiative here.
Additionally, keep in mind that this means whatever food supplies remain available in Gaza now costs astronomical amounts of money, so keep sharing and donating to individual fundraising campaigns. Gazafunds is a good source if you're not sure where to start. Remember that your donations and shares are often the only source of hope for these families.

‼️‼️The crossing is closed‼️‼️
I'm Wasim from Gaza, as you know the crossings are closed and the situation is very difficult, everything is expensive, we cannot afford any food or gas and we are in the holy month of Ramadan and we fast for 15 hours and we cannot break our fast because of the high cost of food...😭😞
As you can see, we do not have cooking gas because the crossings are closed, and we suffer a lot when cooking...😔😭‼️

My mother also needs medicine and vitamins, but she cannot buy them because they are expensive due to the closure of the crossings and the scarcity of the quantity.😭
‼️Help us and donate so that we can break our fast in this blessed month and so that my mother can receive her vitamins...😔🤲🫂‼️

💔 Trapped in Pain… A Mother’s Plea 💔

I am Kholoud Al-Hanawi From Gaza 🇵🇸, the wife of Dr. Ahmad, a surgeon who risked his life in the war to save others. But today, he stands helpless—unable to save his own children. Our home is gone, reduced to rubble, and now we live in a tattered tent, barely shielding us from the burning sun and freezing nights. We have lost everything… but the worst pain is watching our children suffer.
Our precious babies, Yazan (9 years old) and Zeina (2 years old), are battling a cruel disease—Plaque Ichthyosis Psoriasis 🩸. Their delicate skin cracks, bleeds, and burns every single day. Every movement is agony. Every night is filled with their cries of pain. No child should suffer like this.

Tonight, Yazan looked at me with tear-filled eyes and whispered:
“Mama… will I be like this forever?” 😢

I swallowed my pain and forced a smile. How do I tell him that the medicine he desperately needs is beyond our reach? $500 every 3 days—that’s what it costs to ease their pain. But how can we afford it when we barely have food to survive?
Then came his next question… the one that shattered me completely:
“Mama… will I die if we don’t get the medicine?” 💔

No mother should ever have to hear these words from her child. No child should have to live in constant agony, wondering if they will survive. I am begging… if you hear me, if you feel our pain, please help us before it’s too late. 🙏💔

Your donation means life to us 🥹🙏

Figolla is a flat, marzipan-filled Maltese cookie that is typically shaped into lambs or bunnies because it is traditionally prepared during the Easter festivities. These sweet treats are often decorated with icing, melted chocolate, or chocolate Easter eggs. Originally, figolla was made in the shape of fish, baskets, or women, and it symbolized fertility. Regardless of the design, figolla is a staple of Maltese pastry shops and home kitchens around Easter. src.: https://www.tasteatlas.com/figolla ref photo.: https://robandjas.com/2018/02/02/sweet-pastry-figolli-pastry/
