My work revolves around Quisqueya Henriquez’s photomontages. I first drew out the image digitally in photoshop then animated it in another program. My biggest interest in creating this piece was how to incorporate animation into a different style of art. I chose to create a photomontage of New York by pulling together different aspects of the city and throwing them all into one image in an aesthetically pleasing way. I was inspired by Henriquez vibrant color which is why I made it my goal to increase the saturation and contrast of the piece to avoid making the image dull. Her work inspired me to make my animation more abstract which is why I chose to add the giant melting pizza and the lips on Empire State Building. Henriquez's art also has a sense of footing in reality however when it comes to many of the images still being recognizable which is why chose not to alter all of the buildings or even the statue of liberty.
By adding animation to my photomontage it brings new life to the city compared to just a still image. If I were to develop this picture more by adding more images along with animations it would allow me to capture more of New York. One drawback of the animation is that it gives the picture a cartoony feeling compared to Henriquez’s art which would make it difficult to focus on serious issues like race and gender in her work.
